Tiger Woods : Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

I know he doesn't like it. Shouldn't he be referred to instead as a person of color or mixed-race?

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

He should be referred to as mixed race really.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

It's FALSE to call anyone who isn't from Africa an African American.
BUT if an African has come here to be a citizen, THEN he or she
should just DROP "African" from their description anyway and refer
to themselves as an "American.'

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

Not racist, just silly. It would be like calling Bruce Lee a white guy just because his mother was half-white.

"Why do you say this to me when you know I will kill you for it?"

Wow! Really? Because most people would really mistake Bruce Lee for being a 'white guy!" About Tiger, yes he is mixed and people should accept that he is. His race shouldn't really matter but it DOES. If an average joe joins the military, they make him put down his 'race' on the information form and they explicitly tell you to choose just ONE race even if you are bi or multi-racial. Fact is, if Tiger Woods isn't famous and is pulled over by the cops, they are going to see him as a black man.

If this is the case, then it's pretty stupid. People can't be categorised so easily. To make people ignore a significant part of their heritage just for the sake of convenience or whatever is idiotic. As for the "if the cops stopped him" argument, that means nothing. If my mother and my uncle relaxed their hair and told people they were white, few people would be any the wiser. They aren't, though, we just have some "whiteness" a few generations back.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

What are your parents then? Race in America is totally screwed up. I just think it should be somewhat consistent.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

Personally... I say refer to him as Tiger Woods...

Who cares what his background is. That's his buisness.

@toldyousew

Wrong--the the term "African-American" was created BY African-Americans as a name we could claim for ourselves that wasn't a racist label slapped on us by white folks and everybody else. Here's the meaning of the word:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/african-american

Honestly, I'm tired of people who haven't even bothered to try and find out the meaning of the term saying all kinds of stupid thing about what they think it means, and don't know what the hell they're talking about,as usual. I mean, damn, you'd think people would understand the term even though it hasn't even been around that long--here's the history of it:

http://www.aaregistry.org/historic_events/view/african-american-term-b rief-history

And that's a really stupid question coming from the OP, because Tiger IS an American of African (and Asian) descent---there's nothing racist about it--what an ignorant question anyway.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

I agree with you, America is the only country that even does this. And a lot of us are so stuck on calling black people african american that some people call blacks from other countries, like England, african american. It's insulting to black people who aren't from here and don't intend on becoming citizens.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

Its not racist to assume he might be if you didnt know his backround, but dont call him that to his face unless you want a nine iron upside your head.

"Lemme at 'em! I'll splat 'em!"

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

He looks black and chinese.

Re: Isn't it racist to call him African-American?

What will they think of next to call "racist"? Shut the f up with calling everything under the sun racist!
