Philosophy : Is there life after death?

Is there life after death?

Face it; this is the most important question there is. I believe there is, in the sense that Alan Watts best explains:

Basically we're all part of Universal Consciousness which is always here; i.e. our awareness is a constant. It can't disappear when our bodies stop working, because the world and the rest of the universe is still here.
It's also described well in Laura Nyro's song And When I Die. Yes the Blood, Sweat, and Tears hit and Bruce Lee's favorite song:

In this era of Covid it's something people think more about. Any other thoughts?

Re: Is there life after death?

I've always loved Alan Watts. He says and writes things that something in me already knows. Great video.

Re: Is there life after death?

Yes, I've listened to and read him most of my life. He helped me a lot to see what's real; beyond the illusions. It's too bad most people are so narrow in their worldview: either atheists and all that it implies: the belief of no belief. I.e. the most narrow-minded and illusory view there is; or extremely narrow religious belief. Alan Watts is one of the few to bring Eastern thought to the West.

Re: Is there life after death?

What is life?

The question you’re Asking really seems to be, “is there consciousness after death,” as “death” is the inevitable conclusion of life.

Cheerio.

Re: Is there life after death?

Yes, that's the question. My answer is yes, definitely.

Re: Is there life after death?

I really hope there is no afterlife because I don’t want my spirit to return at all.

Re: Is there life after death?

I don’t want my spirit to return at all.

Do you honestly assume that you get any say in the matter?

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

Is there life after death?

Speculation….
The only way to find out is to die…
Once dead, who will ever really know the answer to this question?

That opens a whole new can of worms.

Did someone say…..Ouija board?

If I get pulled over, it better be a gay policeman riding on a unicorn.

Re: Is there life after death?

No, there is no consciousness after death. It has already been scientifically established that human consciousness is a function of the nervous system, we already know how many of those mechanisms work, and when they stop operating you have no mind to speak of.

Re: Is there life after death?

And "scientists" used to believe the Earth was flat and the Earth was the center of the Universe (see Ptolemy). Until those who saw beyond their Flatlands proved them wrong. Do you know what the allegory of the cave is? "Scientifically established". Really. I'd like to see your documentation.

Re: Is there life after death?

And "scientists" used to believe the Earth was flat and the Earth was the center of the Universe (see Ptolemy).

Good god, you're one of "those" types.

There was never a time when "scientists" believed the earth was flat and at the center of the universe. Those false beliefs about the earth which you cite were in fact enforced and encouraged by religious faith, not careful study of the facts, and it was actually the newly developing science of the time which refuted them and gave you the confident knowledge you have about the subject today.

Ptolemy was not a scientist as we understand the term now. The essential institutions and methodology of science didn't even exist in his time, and neither did the word "scientist", which wasn't coined until the 19th century. He was called a "natural philosopher", a discipline which eventually branched off into philosophy on one hand and science on the other.

Until those who saw beyond their Flatlands proved them wrong.

And how did that happen, cupcake? Despite the bullying of the church, men carefully made observations, detected patterns, created models of those patterns, then shared their ideas with other like minded men, debated the models, and adjusted them over time.

Exactly the same process has lead us away from the ancient, goofy religious dualism espoused by you in this thread to an understanding of consciousness rooted in physical brain processes.

You are the flat earther here, not me.

Do you know what the allegory of the cave is?

Yes, cupcake, this stuff is my bread and butter.

"Scientifically established". Really. I'd like to see your documentation.

I have a favorite paper that I always used to direct folks to when they wanted to know what the current scientific understanding of consciousness is, but it is hard to get online now as they want you to buy it or the book in which it first appeared. It's called "Are we Explaining Consciousness Yet?" by Daniel Dennett and it is a great summary of the current consensus (even though it is fairly old, things haven't really changed.)

If you have some form of Word, the second link in this Google search will let you read it for free:

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=are+we+explaining+consciousness+yet+COGNITION&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart

But you won't read it. You people never do. You like the Earth staying flat.

Re: Is there life after death?

And you'll never read Alan Watts. It would interfere with your nihilistic atheistic worldview that everything is an accident and intelligence came from nonintelligence, and everything is worthless and meaningless. And you definitely won't read this:

Re: Is there life after death?

And you'll never read Alan Watts.

I read Watts in college, shit for brains. He was pretty good at some of what he was trying to do, but in the book I read he wasn't interested in developing a model of consciousness using the best information and techniques available, so I moved on to people whose interests were in that direction.

But thanks for confirming that you are determined to remain utterly uneducated and uninformed about the modern scientific understanding of the mind.

It would interfere with your nihilistic atheistic worldview that everything is an accident and intelligence came from nonintelligence. . .

Everything science tells us about intelligence and biological complexity tells us that it all comes from utterly mindless processes that are not directed by any kind of guiding intelligence. Literally, everything.

I'm guessing you're a creationist who denies evolution by natural selection, too.

In other words, you're like a modern flat earther. I'm really going to have fun making you regret that analogy!

. . .and everything is worthless and meaningless.

These silly conclusions do not follow from anything science tells us. Magical fairy dust or whatever bullshit you believe is not necessary to find worth and meaning around us.

And you definitely won't read this:

I did, shit for brains, and when the guy sticks to what he's actually educated about (science), he's just fine.

But when he ventures out of science and into philosophy, a subject he clearly knows jack shit about, he's as stupid as you are. His characterization of atheism, for instance, is a straw man he just pulled out of his ignorant ass.

What a significant but informative contrast between you and I.

I cited a peer reviewed paper published by a respected scholar in a respected journal expressing and explaining the consensus of a majority of thinkers who have studied the subject of the paper.

You cited a fucking INTERVIEW in a popular science magazine (not a journal) where a minor figure in science babbles on about subjects he has no expertise in, expressing minority views that have nothing to do with any consensus his peers have ever come to.

Yes, a very telling contrast.

Re: Is there life after death?

You've proved you're better than me. So when you get to hell just tell Satan, "I proved that you don't exist on the filmboards!"

My priest said consciousness is invisible spirit inside us, it comes from God.

Re: Is there life after death?

The saying "life is but a dream" goes both ways. Death is a never-ending dream.

Re: Is there life after death?

There are a lot of things in existence, but is there such thing as an entity with life in "the hereafter?" Think of all the microorganisms that ever existed!

My late parents met Blood Sweat and Tears on a plane returning from Europe. They told my Dad that his son probably knew who they were. He was right, of course.
