Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Anything James Bond or action flicks.

Well, this is a tomb. I'll make them feel at home

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

The right honorable gentleman does not seem to know that films are all about the theme and the plot that explores it. To quibble about the setting, whether it be a location, or an era, is ridiculous.

Besides, sir, aren't aristocracies centuries-old by definition? And what films in particular are afflicted by such a malaise?

Don't presume to tell another man how to behave, my insignificant, self-agrandizing friend.

I didn't presume, I actually did it. Heed my words, simpleton.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I turn them off before I find out. There are exceptions, thanks to the scrip and acting. "The Leopard" and "Barry Lyndon" for example.

I don't have any problems if it's something like Witchfinder General though.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Films where women or anybody are raped and tortured merely for sadistic entertainment do nothing for me. If it's a film like Witchfinder General which uses it to make a point, then of course its legitimate.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

It carries a message that men in general are violent and abuse women. The violence is necessary to the story. That doesn't mean I enjoy watching it though.

The revenge aspect was funny. I didn't take something that outlandish seriously

What they did to her was something that happens. What she did to them, I've never heard of that happening

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I mostly don't like courtroom dramas. Does Barry Lyndon count as a movie about centuries-old aristocracies?

Romantic comedies.

Wait a minute. Hold the phone… you don't like romantic comedies? I thought you liked Doris Day. She was the queen of romantic comedies.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

You are so correct! I guess I need to make a caveat. YES, I love, love, love Doris Day, and I was even just talking about Shirley MacLaine with Jack Lemmon in rom-coms.

Perhaps my caveat should be that I really like the older ones, but I do not like most of the "newer" stuff that's come out. I don't like what's traditionally referred to as "chick flicks" that are too sappy or ham-fisted.

You are correct, and I need to put an addendum to that comment of mine. Good point! 👍

I pretty much feel the same as you about the newer ones…. with a few exceptions.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I think its because most suck.. But "Harold and Maude" is a great one. I think its "the times", and its not nostalgia for me. 99% of what I love was created BEFORE I was born, and that isn't just movies.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Same for me. Most of the movies I'm drawn to were "before my time," but that's my style and those are the ones I enjoy watching. Some movies later on were okay as well (like I'm a fan of Rocky Horror), but I tend to prefer the silver screen cinema productions.

I'm not up to snuff with most current movies because they all seem the same to me now.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

'Harold and Maude' is such a unique and many faceted movie, that I never consider it as a romantic comedy. Some of the comedy is dark, and the romance is hardly run of the mill.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I enjoyed it, but I could never understand the almost universal accolades it received. It's not a regular romcom either, is it.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Let's talk context. What good romantic comedies came before? (Even if you can only name one - to compare)

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I'm not even that keen on the classic romantic comedies. I'm a lost cause.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I think most dislike them because they're only thinking of "new" stuff. "Harold and Maude" is the other I had in mind, 1971, 5 years before "Annie Hall". Maybe "Never On Sunday", but I'd agree that there aren't many. Romances are usually full of drama. "Sunflower" is a great one, mostly because of the triangle of creation. Vittorio De Sica directs, with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, who were "a couple" for at least a handful of movies.

Garbage torture horror such as the Saw and Hostel movies.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I love most horror, but not that kind either.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I don't understand how anyone can enjoy that stuff. It's too cruel and graphic for me.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I literally can't watch it. It's too disturbing and disgusting.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I liked Bridget Jones, but I haven't seen most of the others because they're romantic comedies and I avoid them.
The first one is different. It's the heart transplant one isn't it?

I love Benny & Joon and quirky love stories. Syrupy stuff irritates me.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Yes! I just love that movie, especially because the scenerio between the love interests is the same thing my dad did with my mom

If you had a VCR I would totally send them to you just to see for yourself

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

What was the one that applied to your parents Nettie?

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Sorry, I got carried away. Untamed Heart is the one I was referring to, not Return to Me,

Which you would probably think of as sappy, perhaps

This man's wife dies and the woman who receives her heart falls in love with him and vice versa

Confucius

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Ok! You have interesting parents Nettie. (I know your Dad isn't here any more. Sorry)

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

Thank you, NZer

The scenario in Untamed Heart that mirrored my parents is that my dad would follow my mom home from work at night to make sure she got home safe and she didn't know

I've stayed in almost 50 hostels, and I think almost every one had that movie, but I had no interest to watch, because I knew it would contain zero truth.

Mafia movies. They glorify criminality and the worst elements of society. They often tack on a comeuppance scene at end, but that isn't the takeaway of these films. Most people watching are rooting for the bad guys against the good guys.

Re: Is There As Specific Film Subject That You Just Don't Like?

I'm not into these super hero blockbuster movies these days. Just not my thing.

I like many types of movies. I dislike many of the same genres for certain reasons though. It may be the director or the writers. It could be the actors who star in the film. It all depends on those things as well as the genre.
