Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

No. And did we really need another thread about this movie?

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

It would be nothing new. Smoking has been glamourized for ages.

Am I missing something? I could be missing something. I often miss things.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

My first thought would be that the character is such a slimeball that it would make smoking look atrocious, not glamorous. But then I forget that many idiots identify with characters like The Joker.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

We could take it another step with portrayals of gangsters smoking or snorting coke. Anything that people who seem "powerful" (and that can be financially, physically, sexually, politically, etc.) do, others, try to mimic. Whether it's what Kate chooses to dress in (those clothes will sell off the racks), or what rap artists flaunt (gold chains, watches, cars), people run out and overextend themselves to "be like them."

Just another version of "influencers," - as in, doesn't mean they're positive, just means that they are.

Am I missing something? I could be missing something. I often miss things.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

Can you imagine the furor if a character on Seinfeld or Big Bang Theory or some other popular sitcom smoked?

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

You already know where I stand with regards to smoking, but to try and eradicate from film is just plain silly.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

There was an anti-smoker on IMDb who once complained about Bond smoking a cigar in Cuba in Die Another Day.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

On Seinfeld it would be a character that grossed them out with their habit

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

Yeah, smoking is by far the worse thing Joker does in the film.

Why do so many throw out the word "glamorizing" when a character does a certain act or has a certain trait?

People act like it's out of the realm of possibility that a writer who's anti-smoking, anti-murder, anti-gun, anti-rape can write a character who rapes, murders, smokes, and shoots people.

We are seeing smoking through the Joker's lense - who does enjoy smoking. Murder, smoking, etc. are glamorizing to him. And the story is told through his lens. - not a third party observer, not through the lens of a protagonist where he serves as the antagonist.

Stories like The Godfather, Goodfellas, Joker, Pulp Fiction are told through the perspective of evil or immoral characters who would normally serve as the antagonist/villain - everyone, even "bad guys", have a story. They have feelings. They have a perspective.

Does a film really have to wink at the audience and imply, "Hey audience watching the movie, this is bad behavior just so you know, this is a really bad character, don't do this," and make bad behavior look ugly, for audiences to understand that the film is not supportive of that behavior?

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

Well, I'm obviously poking fun at the movement by the anti-smoking groups to force films and television to stop showing popular characters who smoke.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

He seems to love this Joker movie more than he loves his fake daughter!

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

Well I agree with that. Context is everything.

If there's a tv show/movie where the actor smokes, and he wants a cigarette, and decides to smoke as his character, when it has nothing to do with the character itself, then they should limit that.

But Joker is impoverished, and it's 1981. It's more likely he would smoke. Same with Godfather, mafia men in 1940s.

But if an actor is smoking just to be smoking, because he's addicted to nicotine, then sure, that needs to be reduced. Same with heroin users: you'd expect to see it in Basketball Diaries as that's what it's about, but you wouldn't allow a junkie actor to shoot up heroin in a scene that doesn't call for it.

You wouldn't want to throw out the n-word gratuitously in a show that doesn't call for it, but it'd fit the context of a racist character or a movie about slavery. Negative behavior must have artistic merit, otherwise, it does become a case of the filmmakers/writers glamorizing it.

Re: Is The Joker glamorizing smoking?

Nicholson's Joker was the best Joker. Sorry, Heath. Sorry, Cesar. You were both awesome, but neither of you interrupted a TV broadcast with an infomercial about poison or danced to Prince….
