Classic Film : Is Arrival a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still

Is Arrival a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still

As I watched Arrival, I thought I had seen this movie before:

Think of it:
Spacecraft(s) from another world lands on earth (one location or many locations).
Purpose - To make the earth safe from itself and save the universe from the Earth's squabbles.
To bring other countries together in peace.
Of course, in the 1951, there had to be man who looked and spoke like a human (Michael Rennie) and in Arrival Amy Adams had to decode a special language in order to speak with someone else on earth.(I haven't seen the 2008 version.)

I'm sure there are many other movies like this, it's just that I don't usually watch them.
To me, this was one of those boring space movies that comes along from time to time and makes the Oscar nominations list.
What did I miss?

What did I miss?

That is a question for which there is no answer. No one can watch a film through the eyes of someone else.

My question for you would be "What did you see?"

Funnily enough, it reminded of another sci-fi classic, one that appeared on the small screen.

Aliens arrive, and a man and woman head a team trying to decipher the alien's language.

All they have to go on is an alien book, whose title they interpret as "To Serve Man."

It turns out that IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!

No, there only similar on a superficial level.

Re: Is Arrival a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still

Not trying to offend, but I have to wonder given the way your post is worded why you even bothered to watch this? The way your last paragraph is written I would assume that you are almost totally ignorant of and have virtually zero interest in the genre, so why bother? Unless you are an Oscar completest? And if you are you would probably know that even today when there are so many science fiction films made the genre still gets very short shrift at the Oscars, with by my count less than 10 SF films ever nominated for Best Picture. And no other film with a plot remotely like this one is among those nominees, including The Day the Earth Stood Still which is only similar in that it is also about first contact. I guess if you think the two have that much in common you might as well never watch 2 different time travel films (they're all the same) or 2 different films about artificial intelligence (just remakes!).

Sorry for being snippy but this attitude that a newer film is a "remake" simply because it shares one or two major plot points (out of many) with an older film is one of my pet peeves. Especially when presented by somebody who clearly doesn't know or like the kinds of films in question.

Re: Is Arrival a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still

I try to be an Oscar nomination completest.
Why else would I have watched Gravity (2013) or Avatar (2009).

I sometimes watch these movies and find one or two I like because the story is interesting to me.
For example, I DID enjoy The Martian and Ex Machina last year.
But, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) has always left me cold too.
Boy, am I in the minority there.

-----------------------

I will watch Arrival again, trying harder to understand it.
Any movie that includes actors like Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, and especially, Forest Whitaker can not--and should not--be dismissed based only on one viewing.

The movie I streamed seemed to be fuzzy and poorly lite. Was that intentional?
I don't know...

Avatar will be on SYFY in a few minutes, for those interested.

Arrival is an outstanding film.

What did I miss?

Like, everything.

I'm guessing you fell asleep about five minutes into ARRIVAL, woke up three minutes from the end and didn't realize you had missed 95% of the movie kiiji

Next time you see it concentrate on the narrative - not just the awe inspiring imagery, the thought provoking, time shifting concept, or the outstanding, achingly human performance by Amy Adams. It's an excellent movie and most deserving of its Oscar nods.

BTW. Amy Adams was robbed of an Oscar nomination (lets not even mention her stunnning performance in NOCTURNAL ANIMALS) for her work in this film. It is ludicrous and laughable that Natalie Portman got nominated ahead of Adams for her often unconvincing performance in the dreadfully disappointing JACKIE. Now there's an overrated film.

You're joking right? The answer is NO.
Have you even seen TDTESS?
Did you really watch Arrival?
