Images from your favorite films

- that you'll never forget because of their emotional value to you.

Here are some of my choices from the films of my favorite director, Elia Kazan, probably only meaningful to those who've seen them.

Splendor in the Grass (1961)

East of Eden (1955)

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Wild River (1960)

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1947)

On the Waterfront (1954)

Re: Images from your favorite films

Don't know about their emotional value but here are some images from my favorite movies.

Bound

Palmetto

U Turn

Romeo is Bleeding

She Creature

Emotional value

The films themselves hold emotional value for you, I'm sure. That's good enough.

Re: Images from your favorite films

It is amazing how in just those movie stills alone, you can see the artistry in the filmmaking. On The Waterfront is my favorite of those listed, although I haven't seen them all.

Artistry

Yes, I couldn't agree more. And because I know a lot about Kazan and these films, I believe that what you are responding to in each image is the way the emotional needs of the characters are captured in the frame, a still image with an emotionally rich forward momentum. You may not know what it is out of context, but there's no doubting that it's palpably there. Being able to do that in every moment of screen time was Kazan's great gift to the world. No one ever did it better, and I suspect that no one ever will.

I'm very grateful to know that you were able to see this artistry - so well put, by the way; thank you for that. And I don't know which of the films you haven't seen, but I strongly recommend all of them. I'm certain you won't be disappointed.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Beautiful, haunting images, NZer. I completely understand the film's appeal to you.

^^This was a completely improvised scene, and Oldman was drunk.

This scene in particular, I had a little inside knowledge about.

Re: Images from your favorite films

Great collection. I love them all, though I haven't seen Oldman's Dracula, so can't really comment on that. The first three images in this post in particular really resonate with me on a deeply personal level. Oh, the magic and mystery of cinema!

Re: Images from your favorite films

You are one of the few I've encountered who are familiar with that third image's movie.

Is that a young Lillian Gish?

The Wind

Oh, this is one of my favorite silent films, so beautifully performed by Gish and directed by Victor Sjöström, who later starred as the old man in Bergman's Wild Strawberries.

I'm thrilled to see another fan of this wonderful work.

King Kong

King Kong

Yes, indeed, these are superb! What a masterpiece that film is. Thanks for those iconic and powerful images. They have been in my memory since I first saw the film as a child. And they break my heart, too, loving animals as I do.

(The film also has a great non-lyrical score by Max Steiner, if anyone is interested. Atypical for him.)

1933 version. This one was the best.

Re: Images from your favorite films

Without any doubt.

Re: Images from your favorite films

This one was emotional for me. It emotionally scared the shit out of me!

I can certainly understand why!

Love your choices, Bongo. And oh, do I feel old when I see that beautiful, very young Diane Lane!

Some are beautiful, some are quite disturbing, Brexit. But to each his own. 🙂

Good answer

Re: Images from your favorite films

Lester Burnham is smiling while he's dead. His face beautifully lit against the dark background. It takes us back to earlier in the film when Ricky films a plastic bag floating in in the wind, and calls it beautiful. The message here is there's so much beauty in the world, and we tend to overlook it. There is real beauty and meaning available in life that makes it all worthwhile. Lester was able to find happiness in his own death.

Child's Play 2 is an underrated gem. The colors here were brighter, cooler, and more vivid than the first one. Special attention was placed on the set design for Andy's classroom, to make sure decor chosen would be of a color that would fancy the cinematography and filter, even the alphabet border, to the objects in the closet Andy was trapped such as the basketball and a vast assortment of toys. Chucky is dominating the shot here, in the center of the shot, his eyes bright blue, holding the rule as if it were a king's staff, surrounded by cool colors. The filter style is shown later on in the toy factory, where each doll was meticulously placed for the best shot; one of the best climaxes in horror history. The symmetry of the head in the shot is beautifully done and a slight nod to Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane
By those who could not hear the music.

Re: Images from your favorite films

I figured you had something like that in mind. Though they are still disturbing images to me, you've well articulated their values to you. 🙂

The images I like aren't popular enough to be found in a basic Google search.

Re: Images from your favorite films

That makes no sense. How about you give titles instead? 🙂

- that you'll never forget because of their emotional value to you.

This was my reply..

The images I like aren't popular enough to be found in a basic Google search.

Not sure how that makes no sense to you.
And why should I list only the titles of my favorite films when that isn't the purpose of your thread topic?

Of course, I understood what you meant.

I wasn't being literal. I was just giving you another option. Instead of images you were unable to find, I thought at least with titles you could share the things you love and in that way participate in the thread by maybe instilling images in the minds of others - something that titles can do.

Of course, I understood what you meant.

No one should've taken it that you were asking for images that we'll never forget because of their emotional value to us.

You were obviously asking for us to post images from films that we'll never forget because of their emotional value to us.

Apparently, stupid people don't know they're stupid.

Of course, I understood what you meant.

You weren't being literal? Okay…

It really isn't that big of deal to me. Like my entire ego is not devestated all because Google doesn't have the images I wanted to share with you. I don't even understand why you're taking this so personally. It's not your fault Google SUCKS.
Right? Lol
It's not our fault that Google is a huge disappointment to everyone involved. Anyway, the images that I like are probably copy-righted and not available to be shared with the public. That still doesn't mean that Google is not crap.

So don't worry about it, okay?

Of course, I understood what you meant.

You're a strange one.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane
By those who could not hear the music.

Of course, I understood what you meant.

What is strange about my reply to Spiderwort? Why are you getting involved? He's in his 60s. I think he can address me himself without your input.
