Film Art and Cinematography : If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

When I have the money saved up, I want to make this most excellent purchase. The image of the water skier is everywhere. They only made like 500 of the one with Eddie and Tina. It is a much more disturbing image I think. The one with the water skier was almost silly. Campy even. Sometimes I can just picture the lady skier waving to some ding a ling off to the side while this 75 foot tall shark is coming right up on her. She's got this ridiculous smile on her face.

And the Classic French size, 72" x 60". How intimidating would it be to have this lying at the head of your bed? Every morning you would wake up to see this fearsome image upside down!

I don't know if I could do that. It might be just as impressive to have it lying against the wall in the front room. You know everybody who walked into the room would be given a start!

Either original King Kong or Bride of Frankenstein, can't pick.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

One time I came across an original movie poster for The Bride of Frankenstein. We're talking 1935 and near mint condition. Oh my god, would you believe $200,000!!!

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I can believe it, thats winning the Lottery type money. I can dream though.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I already have an original movie poster that was gifted to me that I framed and hung up.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Very nice!!! Do people ever comment when they see it?

This is the first movie poster I ever bought. It is precious to me. More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Come to think of it, Joan kind of resembles The Bride of Frankenstein.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Yes people comment on it because it's a massive poster. It's beautifully framed in black, with what looks like fangs all the way around.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

A fellow ISWYD! fan! It's maybe a contender for coziest movie ever. That was William Castle's specialty. Cozy thrillers. I love Strait Jacket and Night Walker, but I think this one from 1965 is my favorite.

The scene you posted is unintentionally hilarious. It was so obvious that Joan was drunk!

"Get OUTTA Here!"

Though I never understood why she grabbed the registration for the car. Did that make any sense to you?

I like the girls, too, They were cute characters. I wanted to hang out with them when I was a kid. I fell in love with this movie by the time the opening credits were over. Love that wacky Frank Devol theme song.

I understand she did like her vodka while working.

I have all three movies!
I never saw any of them at the theaters, but in the late 60s, I did a lot of Saturday night babysitting. I discovered all of Castles movies on one of the three local channels know as The Late Show.

I can still remember the first time I saw The Night Walker! It was late, I was babysitting, and the opening nearly made me turn the TV off, but I hung in there and I'm glad I did. What a fun film!

This really is scary when you are 14 and it's late at night…

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Those are some fun movies! I saw "Strait Jacket" first. It was the Saturday night horror movie hosted by Sammy Terry. I was nine. But the mood of the film was right up my alley. Did you ever notice all the Pepsi placements in that movie? I'll bet Joan was pushy!

That clip from "The Night Walker" is so cool. So imaginative and stylish. I love the creepy opening monologue about the strangeness of dreams. Very effective! Barbara Stanwyck was great. It was her last theatrical film. I'd say a pretty neat way to go out.

I always heard that there were two people in classic Hollywood that nobody ever had a bad word to say anything about. Carole Lombard and Barbara Stanwyck. Barbara would have known how to be friendly and warm while setting boundaries and staying professional. She was tough, but likable. I always liked her.

Those are three perfect little films. The charm is off the charts here! I also like "Homicidal!" very, very much. That is one weird film. Have you seen it?

WC also directed "13 Frightened Girls", which is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I noticed the product placement! I understand that during that period, Joan always had a Pepsi machine brought to each set she was working on. She was after all, a Business Exec.as well as an actress.

Something you said made me think of something… While The Night Walker was Stanwyck's last theatrical movie, I heard that Strait Jacket was a first for Lee Majors.
Stankyck and Majors would work together on The Big Valley shortly after.

I have never seen Homicidal! It looks good! I will definitely give that a look!

"13 Frightened Girls" Another one I have never seen…

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Bette was the only person who could intimidate JC. Are you familiar with the backstage shenannigans during the making of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte"? Those people were tough and ruthless!

That's right about Lee Majors. And Joan insisted that her character be about 40 years old when she was actually 60. That must have been some kind of zoo.

And then there's the most incredible out of nowhere bit of business with Joan's match and the record player!

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I loved watching this as a kid

Doesn't she crack you up? I actually felt bad for the lady she was playing in this. It's cheesy and harmless but as a kid it was kind of scary

Joan was really pretty crazy, and she certainly had to be strong to get to where she did in life

That match across the record was hilarious!
I remember that, but I cringed during the scene where she was flirting with her daughter's boyfriend. I can't even watch that whenever I watch the movie. 😬

Haha! What a shameless hussy

It's been ages since I've seen it. How embarrassing for her daughter

I just now went and watched some of that scene on youtube. The acting was really good

As a kid I mostly remembered her jangling bracelet

Joan's butt was super flat

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Shameless is the word!

Joan's butt was super flat

She had a very angular body. I don't know exactly how padded her shoulders were, but she just didn't have much shape to her. She never did strike me as a bombshell, or a sex kitten.

Both she, and Davis seemed to overpower their male costars.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Oh, I think the two most fascinating characters to have come out of Hollywood were Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. They were both very different and very similar. Joan was sometimes said to be the hardest worker in Hollywood and boy is that not difficult to believe. She was disciplined to a degree that was perhaps unwholesome. She reinvented herself for five decades. She was absolutely impressive in that way, but she was wrong to force her ethics down the throats of her innocent children. I do kind of love Joan Crawford, but there is no doubt in my mind that Christina was telling the truth.

Joan didn't start drinking until she was 35 and yes, I agree with you that she was really a little bit crazy. Bette Davis was a very strong minded person and certainly temperamental, but she always knew she was. She also had the most fabulous sense of humor. I adore Bette Davis. But Joan had a very unstable self-identity.

"Strait Jacket" is a hoot! You know I felt bad for her, too. She lostb20 years in an insane asylum and that really would be the most depressing place on Earth. An insane asylum. Brrrr…. And then when she got out, all she wanted was to have a loving relationship with her daughter. There are a couple of genuinely touching moments in the film.. I think Crawford gives a near excellent performance in the film.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

She was good at her craft. I believe Christina too

Drunk, control freak Joan should not have had children. At least she didn't abuse the "twins"

If we take the time to see with the heart and not with the mind, we shall see that we are surrounded completely by angels ~ Carlos Santana

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

The whole thing with the twins was weird. Like people don't have their individual dynamics going on. Christina was probably very strong-willed and Christopher desperately needed a male role model and the two twins were probably the more compliant type. Also, Joan was more financially stable when the twins came along almost ten years later. I think she was also married to Alfred Steele around that time and that would have probably calmed her nerves as well.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Sad for those little kids

Reminds me of a true story I read about a little boy who had been living in foster homes

He was being taken to a family that was adopting him and his little hand was shaking in the adult's hand as they were walking up to the house

Long story short. His mother was too hard on him and expected him to be better than he was, and he wasn't a bad kid. She was just too strict. Nothing he did was ever good enough according to her standards

He snapped. Killed both his parents with a hatchet. He eventually was released, probably because he was a teen when he murdered them. He was evaluated and it was determined that he wouldn't kill again, because of the circumstances that led to him committing murder were not likely to ever happen again

He died young though, his heart gave out

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Christina claims they weren't actually twins?

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

They weren't. Joan just referred to them that way

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Yes. I have read about how intimidated JC was by the time of filming Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte began.

She could be tough, but she couldn't be hard.

Bette was the only person who could intimidate JC.

She once made Joan crumble by simply asking, "Are you going to wear that?

Bette Davis could do that to people. Some people are steamrollers. All she had to do was give you a certain look…. or a few well chosen words…

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I'd like to think, of course, that Bette would like me. Lol. I certainly wouldn't want to get on her bad side, but in interviews I find her delightful. She was fascinating just to listen to.

When all is said and done, her performance in Baby Jane has got to be my very favorite.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

You know I have never seen a Star Wars movie. It's kind of ridiculous, but I have never gotten around to it. They just do not look appealing to me. And I will probably go to my grave having never seen a Harry Potter movie or LOTR. The closest I ever got was the Star Wars Christmas special from 1978 and I saw that about ten years ago with a friend. It was fun.

Interesting and I get it.

I saw just one LOTR and that was enough.
Never got into Harry Potter either.

You do know the SWHS is dreaded among us fans.
So with you being a non SW fan I can see why you would like it!

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I have no doubt about fans not liking the SWHS. I liked it a lot, but that was because it was very high on camp value.

The only thing campier was The Paul Lynde Halloween Special from 1976, which, incidentally, KISS appeared on. Along with the Wicked Witch of the West and Betty White.

I would say that it's not going to be something that a lot of people are going to like. I mean really, it's pretty terrible, but it has all that crazy late 70s charm and that's really what I respond to.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

That's a little annoying. Movie posters artwork started getting really dull and colorless around the mid 70s. I love Jason as much as the next person, but that poster has nothing going for it, art-wise. 500 dollars is a lot of money.

the most I ever spent on a movie poster was 75 dollars for the William Castle\/Joan Crawford goofy classic, "I Saw What You Did!" and it was from 1965 and was extremely vivid and artistic and I think beautiful. And in excellent condition.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

I have a few. One is a HUGE mural type poster.

I also have the following, all framed: original Dawn of the Dead poster, 2 Argento films, Carpenter's The Thing, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and a Star Wars one (which isn't up right now. I got tired of it. One of the original ones that looks painted).

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

That's a neat looking poster.

Elizabeth Sheppherd was the doomed reporter Joan Hart in Damien Omen 2.

I don't mean to sound callous, but I think I would have cracked up trying to act terrorized by some dumb crow. Actually, crows are very smart. But still. I like this movie very much, but this scene really takes the cake. I feel awful for laughing.

The opening death sequence was the worst. omg.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Lmao, I love old horrors. I bought the poster before I ever saw the film, which wasn't exactly the best, but that poster instantly called to me. It was the first thing I bought for our apartment the day I heard we got it. I was looking browsing through horror posters and that one caught my attention. It was only available in really small size, or FUCK OFF big. Of course I opted for the latter. Never regretted it. Visitors always remark on it.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Yes. I thought so. I think that would be the absolute worst way to die. I can't even think about it.

The Nicholas Pryor death scene you posted was awful, too. Knowing you're going to get smashed to smithereens in about 12 seconds. Yikes! The first two movies got really creative with the death scenes.

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

For me it was the poor guy who got trapped under the ice and they did all they could but could not save him.

And do you know why Pasarian, 1:46 in the vid, was killed?

"Please vote to preserve the unique character of Warren…" - Robert Duvall

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

It's never clearly explained. Something about the damn PR 84 was all I could make out. He'd been in India when a couple of the workers had been murdered. Whatever. I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's probably the weakest death scene in the movie.

Yes, Lew Ayres under the ice was terrifying. What a horrible way to die. Brrr…. The final wide shot taking in the whole iced over lake with everybody frozen in terror and frustration was beautifully done.

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Yeah, I think Pasarian was taken out when he saw something fishy going on.
And the corporation wanted to get bigger, more powerful and I think he objected to that.

That one dude who looks like Mr. Brady was getting into doing some unethical things.
I'm not sure how much he knew of Damien but he supported him.

"Please vote to preserve the unique character of Warren…" - Robert Duvall

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Mr. Brady! Ha ha! That was cute. Robert Foxworth. Yes, he had the late 70s perm. There is a scene at Mark's birthday party where he asks Damien if he can feel something happening within himself. "Suspicions of destiny" I think is how he very eerily phrases it. Him and the sergeant played by Lance Henricksen were sent by Lucifer to watch over Damien and guide him.

I hate to think this, but obviously there are Satanists in real life. I actually read The Satanic Bible by Anton Levy when I was in my 20s. Sheer curiosity. The guy was both ridiculous and very dangerous. The late, great Cookie Mueller said it best when this guy she had recently met revealed to her one night while they were out in the woods that he was a devil worshipper and she said that he was kind of this absurd person who took himself way too seriously and I think that's the dangerous part. (She said "feets don't fail me now!" and got out of there like a you know what. She was the best.) The best part about religious faith is, I think, this lightness of spirit. Just to strive to be happy, like Maxx Ehrmann said in that beautiful poem he wrote. And I think what people who get mixed up with Satanism are very, very lost and frightened people who somehow allow themselves to be taken advantage of. It's what those unpleasant Manson girls always said. They were weak and lost and Charlie Manson took advantage. Patricia Krenwinkle seemed like the only who was genuinely remorseful, though of course that's hard to gauge. God, i am getting so off topic here. And people who practice Satanism probably don't feel like they are taken seriously. Anton Levy was dangerous because he tried to make Satanism seem like this harmless thing that was based on a hedonistic spirit, which almost everybody has some degree of. And that's what those Hollywood cannibals were doing. Some people probably think it's all this dramatic fabrication, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that some of the most powerful people in Hollywood do stuff like drink baby's blood.

Robert Foxworth was married to Elizabeth Montgomery in real life, by the way. And she was, as we all know, a very pretty and friendly witch!

"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

Bro, I don't mind you going off topic at all ever.
That is a good read and that is what we do.

"Please vote to preserve the unique character of Warren…" - Robert Duvall

Re: If you could own one movie poster, what would it be?

The Satanic Bible is actually a good read, except for about 2/3 of the way through where Anton rambles incessantly, and it's my belief that he wrote what he did to see if people were paying attention.

Satanists do not "worship the devil," and there are no human or animal sacrifices.

Sammy Davis Jr., was in the Church. So was Jayne Mansfield. Marilyn Monroe appeared with Anton as well.

If you read the book simply for what it is, there's nothing foreboding in that book. One of the main tenets is to do no harm.

The Satanic Temple in Salem, MA is different. They're not theatrical, generally speaking, and it's more of a philosophical gathering of like-minded people who reject the restrictions and tight reins of mainstream organized religion.
