Midway : If they remade this movie would you go see it?

If they remade this movie would you go see it?

I would and not because I'm into remakes, most of them today suck, see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1234719/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Midway has all the best examples of how to make a great war movie; casting, story, combat scenes. But it also has the worst examples as well; unnecessary love story, overuse of stock footage, and the horrible casting choice of Edward Albert as the wimpy Tom Garth. I hate that character so much I laugh with enjoyment everytime his cockpit blows up and he is screaming in agony. Call me a heartless bastard but after listening to the guy drone on and on about his Jap girlfriend for an hour him getting hit was the best thing ever.

Take all those bad thigns out of a remake and I'd go see it.

Re: If they remade this movie would you go see it?

I would see it if it made a reasonable attempt at accuracy. If it's crap, like Pearl Harbor or Red Tails, I might skip it.

I don't think a studio would back an "accurate" account of the battle without a side love story. It wouldn't be appealing enough to women in the eyes of the people at the studios who make the decisions I think.

They could have the wives of Waldron and Thach involved in the early part of the movie. At least that is what I would expect Hollywood to do at minimum with regards to relationships.

A well done documentary style movie would be better. Or even have the main thread throughout the movie be John Ford and his camera crews trying to document the battle for the Navy.

Coral Sea might make a good documentary. The confusion was so complete it was almost comical.

Exactly as Vulcan's Rule says. The drama of the 1942 naval battles needs no embellishment, no silly subplots. These battles represent the US Navy at it's courageous best. A straight story would be wonderful

But as what was said, please not another "Pearl Harbor." I will walk out of another movie showing WWII airplanes buzzing around like Starfighter...

If it were made like a CG video game for ten year olds, I'd skip it. I gotta feeling that's how they would re-make it.

Re: If they remade this movie would you go see it?

Depends on who makes it.

Michael Bay? Roland Emmerich?
They should not be allowed anywhere near the project!

Hanks/Spielberg (Band of Brothers/The Pacific)
Hell yeah!

My sentiments exactly. It would all depend on the cast and crew. But even talented film makers can make terrible movies these days. As always, I would wait to see some reviews before committing myself to getting my hopes up about it.

Re: If they remade this movie would you go see it?

I'm actually glad that Edward Albert played Tom Garth. The way that Charlton Heston's character lays into him on the carrier (something along the line of "...flame your tail!" is epic and wouldn't have been near as awesome with another actor.

I'd rather not see a remake of Midway. There are so many other battles that could be portrayed in my opinion. This film was actually done quite well even with the love scenes.

"What makes us different from German or Italian Americans?"

"Pearl Harbor I guess."

Just epic.

Re: If they remade this movie would you go see it?

Well...it surely has to be a serious remake! It should feel like the TV-series "Band of Brothers" or war movies like "Saving Private Ryan", "Torra! Torra! Torra!", "Platoon" or "Black Hawk Down" for instance. Please, no war movie like "Pearl Harbor"!

And...although I like "Midway" (or "The Battle of Midway") very much, it's kinda dated. It really needs a remake!

Re: If they remade this movie would you go see it?

The biggest issue I see for an accurate remake is what to do with the rest of Hornet's air group besides VT-8. Do you make Mitscher or Ring out to be incompetent or do you just ignore The Flight To Nowhere like the 1976 movie did? Mitscher's career should have been over with his submittal of the false After Action Report for the Hornet for the Battle of Midway. But the Navy didn't want to air their "dirty laundry" in public so as to not lose the confidence of the American people they had just gained with the victory at Midway.
