Chris Rock : If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have killed

If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have killed

I thought the monologue was great.
He pointed out every hypocrisy from "not enough important parts for black actors" to "Jada Pinkett Smith's ridiculous boicott" to "in the 60's we didn't care because we cared about real is 5b4 sues" and the "what are you wearing?" joke at the end was the cherry on top.

The problem is that that's all he brought to the table.
3 1/2 hours of race jokes. 3 *beep* hours of the same thing over and over and over and over.
I love Chris as a comedian, but it got to a point where i couldn't wait for those bits to end.

I'm yet to find a person who enjoyed his entire performace as a host.

That black vs white sh!t is all the material black comedians seem to have. Same as women vs those evil pigs known as men is all the material female comedians seem to have.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

I loved Creed and I loved Michael B Jordan in it, but does anyone seriously think he should have been up there with those other performances? I mean maybe as good as Matt Damon in Martian, but really I don't even know. You cant just get nominated because you're black...

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

I thought the exact same thing. Jordan was decent but nothing more. The plea from the black community for him to be nominated just goes to show that black people don't watch movies that don't have black people in predominant roles. Remember when Chris Rock was interviewing black people on the street? Shows you how much they know when all of them have seen Straight Outta Compton but never even heard of Spotlight or Bridge of Spies.

That's generalising.
Surely if something has a good story, people of varying ethnicities could be interested to watch? Not everyone needs to see themselves up on screen to watch something ...

George Lucas talking about: 'Hey, give it to me, I'll fix it. I'll make 20 more of them'

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

Indeed it's a generalization, but I do believe there's truth to it. Black people are much more likely to embrace a movie starring a black actor than they are embrace a movie with an all-white cast. The fact that there was a plea for Straight Outta Compton to be a Best Picture nominee just goes to show either : a) the black community "generally" doesn't pay enough attention to movies that don't have black actors in major roles or b) this is a general case of trying to implement an affirmitive action style of nominating people for Oscars since neither Jordan, Will Smith or Straight Outta Compton were worthy of being nominated.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

Fair enough (but the same generalisation could apply to other ethnicities too, I suppose hence 5b4 Hollywood casting).

I haven't even seen that film ... is it any good? It does seem like it plays on black American stereotypes, though ... but, I need to catch up with last year's releases .

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

I thought Straight Outta Compton was good but not great, although I listened to N.W.A. back in the late 80's so I already had a preconceived interest before seeing it. It's a solid movie that I'd recommend, it pretty much stays true to the group's story, covering all the highs and lows during their time together. Of course if you've never listened to or cared about N.W.A., there's a chance the subject matter may not interest you.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

Oh right, thanks.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

I thought Straight Outta Compton was really good. So good that if it was nominated I wouldn't have been surprised.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

I don't care if that's the way black gangstas talk, I can't believe that incoherent dialogue was taken seriously enough for a nomination. They said, "Motha-fcker" in every line... I think.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

Straight Outta Compton was a gutter film about gutter trash people. It is a movie catering to a certain type of black person, what would have been called Black Exploitation in the 1970s. The idea of a film of this calibar receiving Academy Award nominations is absurd.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have kille

Straight Outta Compton was an excellently made drama about talented artists coming from horrible and humble beginnings and had to suffer through tons of racial injustice in order achieve their dreams.

Sadly alot of people feel the way you do, which is why the problem continues.

Agreed.

Re: If he stopped the race jokes after the monologue he would have killed

I agree. The monologue was perfect. He should have moved on from there. I think that is the real complaint of most people.
