Mary and Max : "I work in a condom factory"?

"I work in a condom factory"?

What was the point of that. Were we not supposed to be creeped out that some grown man wrote this in a letter to a young girl?

Or is this supposed to show us that Asperger's people don't understand social convention etc.?

What was the point?

What hump?

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

The point is they were humans.

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

So all Aperger's say these sorts of things to children?

Or all adults say these sorts of things to children?

What hump?

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

As humans we make mistakes, we sometimes don't know what to talk about, don't know a lot of things, but getting it out there is a good place to start when you talk about meaningful relationships..

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

But the movie did such a bad job making any meaningful point.

What hump?

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

Same as accepting candy from a child and offering candy in return. We know Max doesn't mean any harm in this, but he simply doesn't know it's not appropriate. Same with the condom factory, he doesn't realize that it's not appropriate to write this to an 8 year-old girl.

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

Are you austistic? Only Autistics and Siths deal in absolutes.

Someone who was raised in an era when something like Asperger's or Autism was seen as little more than retarded, mentally deficient, or just bad behavior, he would never have been taught properly. Whereas these days, we know what the deficient qualities of an Asperger's are, and this know how to teach them to normalize them. My mother, for example, raised me watching many films, reading lots of books, etc. as well as teaching me basic concepts of propriety. If I did something not naughty, but improper, she explained to my what I did, and why it isn't a good thing to do.

Within the era Max is supposed to come from, it fits that he'd be improper in such a way. It also shows the shift in things; he is only mildly interested in Mary initially, and the letters he writes are more about expelling his inner issues than conversing with someone.

I think it also shows the variance between them. Mary is innocent but curious. his mention of condoms and prostitutes doesn't even register with her, which shows the childish innocence she had; whereas he has innocence and fear. Questions most adults brush off send him into a spiral of fear and terror.

That's an absolute statement. So which of these two do you think you are? Or maybe you're an autistic Sith?

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

I'm Asperger's, so functional Autistic Jedi. :P

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

It's also for his next line about him never having used a condom.

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

The whole movie was just not top 250 material.

What hump?

Re: "I work in a condom factory"?

I always assumed it was due to his Asperger's.
