Manchester by the Sea : I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I absolutely liked the storyline. Casey's acting was great (although not Oscar-worthy) and it made me tear up a couple of times....but the soundtrack was absolutely terrible. The music was completely out of place with the scenes. One scene in particular was the flashbacks to when the house was burning with the kids inside and the wife was screaming out for them. The music was so out of place, it distracted me. I usually cry in these scenes (because the music makes the scene that more emotional and depressing), but nope. The music was terrible in this film.

Enjoyed the film, hated the soundtrack. It's a pity because this movie is great and sad....but the soundtrack just sucks. Whoever composed it.....

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

It is Adagio by Tomaso Albinoni and it's one of the most beautiful pieces ever.

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I think the Adagio is one of the most moving music ever written and I found it perfect for the scene. Unfortunately that's the only thing I liked in the movie.

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I liked it a lot. It somehow reminded me of 'Paris, Texas' which is one of my all time favs.

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I agree. It is a beautiful piece of music. But it was used to MUCH better effect in the 1981 "Gallipoli" (the end scene, 😭) than this heavy-handed, overly somber snooze fest.

And I loved "You Can Count on Me".

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I pretty much hated the entire thing. What was Lonegan attempting to prove or even say with this Debbie Downer of a film?

It had a tragic but interesting premise with a character study that could have resonated more powerfully, yet built around it was no genuine emotional catharsis or resolution and I just don't get the overall point.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I really kind of hated it, too. KL aimed for total understatement and he killed his own movie. There is just nothing here.

Life isn't always full of pat solutions or glad tidings, but this one just wallowed in the misery of its own lead character who couldn't forgive himself, yet did it have to attempt to drag the audience down with him without even a small measure of joy for him?

Heck! Compare this to Terms Of Endearment. That one ended sadly, but it was life affirming at the same time.

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

"Terms of Endearment" is a wonderful movie. I love that movie to pieces. Now that you bring it up, ToE and MbtS are in a way polar opposites.

"Manchester by the Sea" has absolutely no energy that I can tell. It is one of the most blue-grey movies I have ever seen. The movie is muted.

But what a great scene from ToE this was!!! Humor and tragedy working in unison. What an achievement!

Yes, it may not be the best comparison, yet it is still a family drama. TOE knew where its heart and joy lay and the characters were just so darn appealing. It is a one of kind and the balance of pathos and humor was spot on.

MacLaine had never been better and in an exceptionally strong year for leading ladies, I cannot begrudge her win, even if Winger gave a performance of a lifetime too. Emma's preparation in the hospital to talk to her boys and then the scene outside after with Aurora and the oldest boy who can't cope with his feelings just tears me up and tears me up.

Re: I hated the soundtrack so much!!

I thought the scenes where Lee has to drive back and forth to drop off and pick up Patrick (with the accompanying background music) seemed a little comedic.
