He's technically my grandmother's second husband's first cousin's son, but my grandmother and step-granddad got married when I was a year old. So the love was always there, despite not sharing a family tree. My cousin died when I was about 11, back in the early 90s. It was heartbreaking to listen to my grandmother describe she and my step-granddad's hospital visits, as she mentioned that they had to spoon feed my cousin because he was so weak and frail. The three of us went to the wake, but I sat in the waiting area, since I couldn't bear seeing him like that.

Those were some scary and sad times. I was only a child but I can still remember the paranoia and fear adults were facing at the time. Every week we’d see newspaper articles about people announcing their status. It was something else.

I wasn’t afraid really. The adults were. I was a child. I suppose I could’ve gotten it had I had a blood transfusion but other than that being that I was a child I wasn’t worried about catching it. I was concerned about those who were dying from it. It was a death sentence at that time.
