Christopher Nolan : I don't get the hype

I don't get the hype

So I've heard quite a lot about this guy, so I decided his films and have been disappointed. Keep this in mind I haven't seen Momento, The Prestige, or Insomnia. (However I'm not sure I want to continue watching his filmography)

So, Nolan fans, why do you like this guy so much?

Re: I don't get the hype

Which of his films do you watch? even be Nolan fans doesn't mean you are love all of his movie, it all subjective
Also what are some of your favourite film?

Re: I don't get the hype

I've seen Following, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar. I liked The Dark Knight and Inception, but everything else was mediocre.(not terrible, but not good)

My top 10 favorite movies are

1. Sátántangó
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Persona
4. The Turin Horse
5. Mirror
6. The Tree of Life
7. The Godfather
8. Dekalog
9. Taxi Driver
10. Stalker / La Dolce Vita

Re: I don't get the hype

Wow, we must have very similiar tastes! The Tree of Life is my all time favourite film, and stalker is in my top 10. Can I ask where you were able to find Satantango? It's something I really want to watch.

I haven't seen it myself, but I think you'd really enjoy "The Human Condition". It's a Japanese trilogy of epics.

Re: I don't get the hype

I got Sátántangó from Amazon, but if your not in America you have have a region 2 DVD player.

I've been meaning to watch "The Human Condition" and just Kobayashi films in general.

Japanese cinema is amazing!

Re: I don't get the hype

Subjective, I like some of his mediocore film that you list more than some of your favourite film but I advice you to watch movie Memento, The Prestige, you may end up like it or not is another story but those two are his masterpierce that you still doesn't watch.

Re: I don't get the hype

Agreed. At the end of the day it's all subjective.

Re: I don't get the hype

I don't like his films either, they are emotionally cold and distant and are afraid to have any sort of fun.

Re: I don't get the hype

Because he makes blockbusters which drives people to think and has personal touch to all of them. Inception, The Prestige and Interstellar has meta levels, even. For example, Inception can be seen as a metaphor to the filmmaking itself, and the train in this film symbolizes Nolan's love to his wi 1908 fe. Read the quote about "Waiting for a train" thinking about it, and it will let you see it through a totally different and fresh point of view. The scene with Fischer and his father in this film is also very meaningful, considering that Nolan himself lost his father somewhere close to the time when this film was made. He died from a cancer. Interstellar is an open letter of Nolan to the one of his daughters, about the simple thing: even if he's about to leave her to shoot his new film, he will always come back, just like Cooper came back to Murph in this film.

There's A LOT of personal touches and intimate details like this in his films. That is what I am loving him for. And he also chooses my favorite actors to work with.

Nolan, I love you forever!
