Willow : I couldn't finish this… Brownies :(

I couldn't finish this… Brownies :(

I hadn't watched Willow since maybe the mid 90's, back when I was in middle school. I always thought about grabbing it, but it never is around, nor is it ever on TV or movie channels. However, this past weekend I decided to snag a copy, and boy... wish I hadn't.

The movie was fine and enjoyable. Up until the point of the Brownies. Once those clowns became involved in this movie it became intolerable to watch. They never shut up, they hijack every scene, they are over the top obnoxious (not to mention utterly pointless), and they add NO humor element at all. I was embarrassed for Kevin Pollack. Each time my brother and I tried to enjoy the movie those two idiots kept blabbering on about something, annoyingly so.

Finally my brother and I turn to one another at about the same time and go, "I can't finish this ... it's awful." So I flipped to the last parts, then switched the movie off and have no intention of ever watching it again.

Those Brownies ... what a bad idea.

In your opinion!

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

Re: I couldn't finish this… Brownies :(

I did make it through but I have to agree they were pretty grating. They're that kind of comic relief the film tells you is funny against your will.

Re: I couldn't finish this… Brownies :(

I shrug my shoulders at them. The were the C3PO and R2 of the movie, only funnier, but also not as involved in the overall story. You add those two factors, and their characters can, at times, seem more of a nuisance than helpful.

They're essentially there for comic relief, but the audiences gut instinct is to wonder how important they are to the story's action, and then judge them accordingly.

So, I get your point, and even agree with it some, but I still enjoyed them and their contribution to the film.

You have to keep in mind that this is more of a light hearted fairy tale, and not really a heavy angst ridden adventure like Jackson's Ring movies.

My only real beef was that I had seen better swordsmanship in other films than what Kilmer offered in this film.

R2 and Threepio are actually more like Willow, not the Brownies. The Brownies are like Jar Jar.

Re: I couldn't finish this… Brownies :(

Lucas borrowed from Tolkien HEAVILY when he wrote the story for Willow, to the extent that I would expect he was a little embarrassed when he put the story before the team that would help him produce it.

With this in mind, I view Willow as nothing to be taken too seriously, story-wise. It's appeal, therefore, needed to rest heavily on whatever charm Lucas managed to put into it...and he found a lot.

To explain about Tolkien: the Willow-folk were just Hobbits...the baby was the 'one ring' that needed to be taken far away from the shire...Willow's friend was Sam...Willow's decision to take the baby was a copy of Frodo with the ring...Kilmer was Aragorn...teaming up with him in a tavern was a copy of LOTR...the spirit that speaks to Willow in the forest was a copy of Galadriel...the description of the witch growing in power was a copy of growing of power of Sauron...etc, etc, etc.

The film needed a good deal of charm to distract the viewer from all of these very familiar elements, and I personally found the Brownies to be a wonderful addition. I laugh over almost every scene they're in.

I know I sound like I don't like Willow, but that's not true, I own it on DVD and watch it once every year. It's a very enjoyable film, and elements like the Brownies help give it its charm.

I just attempted to re-watch this as i have not seen it since probably the early 1990's (i would have been a teenager in late 1992) and i also could not even finish it due to boredom and i consider boredom to be pretty much the worst crime a movie can commit.

i think a lot of it is that it's just hard to get into these types of movies for me as i have not liked these kinds of movies (that whole fantasy/magic and the like) since i was basically a kid.

plus, after you get older and have seen plenty of movies (i have seen 2,000+ total movies) you can tell what stands out (i.e. what interests me on a higher level) vs what's just average to below average and so on.

NOTE: there is only 203 movies that i personally scored a 7 or higher on IMDb out of the 2,000+ total movies i have seen. i consider those my favorites. the link in my signature only lists all movies i gave a 7.5-8/10(basically a 8) or higher which is currently 115 movies. with that said... i still consider movies i score a 6 or higher to be Thumbs Up status as like i always say what makes or breaks a movie in the long term is whether they are movies i want to re-watch from time to time or not. so basically movies i won't re-watch cannot score above a 5/10 (Thumbs Down) from me and movies i will re-watch cannot score below a 6/10.

Someone needs to edit a debrowniefied cut of Willow.

Gotta disagree. I love the Brownies. Especially Pollack's. He's hilarious.

So many stories, so little time.
