Brian De Palma : His most underrated movie?

His most underrated movie?

If you ask me, no movie of his is more underrated than Mission To Mars. It's flawed for sure, but it's so fun to watch and absolutely BEAUTIFUL to look at. Stunning. The effects are dated, but look good for their time.

However, Body Double is really, really great, so I could easily pick that one as well. It's an intense gripping story (which only beco 5b4 mes more interesting the crazier it gets) with incredible acting by Craig Wasson. I immediately became a fan of him after that. Not to mention it has one of the best scores I've ever heard.
I watched it at my school once, and I (along with a friend) was the only one who liked it. Unbelievable!

Re: His most underrated movie?

Body Double sucks. I couldn't believe how lousy it was the first time I saw it. One of those movies you sit through and finish for bragging rights that you actually managed to watch the whole thing.

Snake Eyes is his most underrated film. The first 1/3 is brilliant.

Re: His most underrated movie?

Body Double is one of his best LMAO, it has everything that makes a De Palma Film a De Palma Film. Snake eyes is good but falls 2 pieces at the end. Still love the movie tho, IMHO his un-sung masterpiece is Raising Cain(both versions)

Top 5

Dressed to Kill
Sisters
Raising Cain
Blow Out
Body Double

That's why it was such a massive disappointment for me. It had all the pieces, but none of them fit for me. I may need to watch it again.

Re: His most underrated movie?

Body Double is De Palma at his most over excessive, perverse, & voyeuristic. Its def one of my fav films of his.

Idk if you have seen the dc of raising cain either yet, but it works better than the theatrical for me. The twists make more sense. Its all the same scenes just rearranged. Feels even more De Palma.

Cain is De Palma at his most playful, diabolical, & twisted.

Re: His most underrated movie?

I love Body Double it's my favourite of BDPs. Can you please recommend some more from his back catalogue in this ilk?

Re: His most underrated movie?

Sorry I'm just seeing this now way later, but all the ones I previously mentioned are excellent. Blow out, Dressed to kill, Sisters.....Obsession is a really good one & his first trip into horror- Murder-a-la-mod is on the criterion blow out disc. I highly recommend seeing that one, it's pure de palma, has most of his regulars in it-jennifer salt & william finley, from 60s period. Also his newest film passion was really good and femme fatale from 2002. These are all in the realm of Hitchcock mode Depalma. Still I feel like raising cain is my fav & his most underrated film.

Re: His most underrated movie?

BODY DOUBLE is good but the male lead is what ruins the movie.

Re: His most underrated movie?

Craig Wasson is an amazing actor and was perfect for that part......no way he ruins the movie.

Re: His most underrated movie?

For me, his most underrated films are Casualties of War and Femme Fatale. They are his best movies, along with Carlito's Way.

Re: His most underrated movie?

The Black Dahlia. It's not old enough to be rediscovered and will hopefully get it dues sometime in the future like the great Body Double eventually did.

Wise Guys.

I figured once we got here, there was no way Uncle Mike could refuse me.

Blow Out

Yes, this is really me.

Re: His most underrated movie?

The Black Dahlia. I'm probably one of three people that actually liked it. I think De Palma wanted to see what a 1940's film-noir would look like if the Hays Code never existed.
