The Amazing Spider-Man : Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Garfield was a terrible peter parker

He was fine as spiderman but I could not take him seriously as the nerd everyone picks on. Look at him, he's a six foot, handsome, skateboarding punk. He'd be more convincing as one of Peter Parker's bullies.

At least the scrawny Tobey Maguaire looks and sounds like the type of person people would make fun of.

Kinda disappointing.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

I disagreed, the angle they were going for I think was this- Garfield's Parker could be part of the popular crowd but he keeps everyone at arms length and will go against the crowd, like when he would not participate in the humiliation of another kid. He is not someone jocks will pick on but the one they will go after because he is a smart-ass who will point out what a-holes they are.

And that what Peter is- quiet most of the time, will have some biting comment but overall a good person who will go through hell if that meant to do the right thing (he also lacks much needed foresight and will pay heavily for his dumb choices).

I will be surprised if anyone says that he couldn't possibly be with Gwen or Mary Jane, on grounds of attractiveness because like you said, Garfield is a good looking guy.

I AM MELON LORD!

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

In the comics Peter is an attractive guy. He might not look like that in the first few issues wearing glasses but after losing his glasses he does have a pretty nice face. Heck, Liz Allen who was a popular girl in his class was attracted to him (and it's a shame she has yet to be in a movie). If you don't know who Liz Allen is I'll tell you she ends up marrying Harry and has a kid with him named Norman.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Yeah. In the (three) animated series I've seen Peter Parker is good looking.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

hahahahahaha yeah yeah keep lying to yourself idiot.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

dorian dont lie to yourself, we know that you envy andrew for being so much better than you and being so succesfull in everything that you ahve failed, so dont be jelaous, you still are a retarded idiot, and he is still the perfect spider-man

I disagree.

I didn't really sympathise with Maguire's Peter, or even really empathise with him for that matter. I re-watched the Raimi movies yesterday, and Peter made me so damn angry because he was an un-assertive pussy. Not to say he wasn't a nice person, he just got on my nerves. The amount of crap he took was infuriating. It's a shame, I seriously think that Maguire could have done a better job with better writing.

Garfield's Peter was a guy I understood. He remind me a lot of myself at that age. While Maguire's Peter looked at the popular crowd and wished he was one of them, Garfield didn't give a damn about them and was happy doing his own thing. Being a nerd doesn't necessarily mean being a complete pushover wimp, it means doing what you want even if other people don't consider it to be cool.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

1960s Peter Parker was never actually bullied. He was teased, sure, but it was more banter than being picked on. Watch a sitcom sometime, where the characters make fun of one another.

In the first comic, Peter whines because he asks the other kids to go to the science fair with him, and none of them want to go. That's not being picked on. If Peter was being picked on, he never would have invited them to go with him in the first place.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

I didn't like his Spider-Man. I enjoy when Spider-Man makes jokes when he fights a villain, but Garfield just comes off as being a cocky p**ck.

hahahaaha yeah keep lying to yourself idiot.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Guess we know who Andrew Garfield has a restraining order on.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Garfield would be fine given any material at all to work with. Both films were so badly written that I feel sorry for him.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

please stop, the Toby Maguire fanboys have come out in packs since this trailers been released

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

It's not the actor, it's the writing. No one could have played Parker well given this awful script. That's why maybe the sequel has a chance but I really have my doubts. Peter already is coming off as a douchebag in all the promo stuff.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

But, shacklefort, don't you know, Peter Parker / Spider-Man is supposed to come off as a total douchebag. Who wants their hero to come off as a sincere, intelligent and trustworthy when we can have a power-tripping, sociopathic douchebag who has a lot of energy, making him move a lot... because obviously, the viewers have such a problem with ADHD, they need their hero to hop around more than a grasshopper, acting like the biggest moron possible.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

retarded luke you dont know nothing about spider-man or peter parker stop pretending that you know.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Because everyone want Garfield to stop being Parker.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Not everyone but a lot of people.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

The ideal Peter Parker/Spider-Man is probably somewhere in b/w Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Personally I liked Tobey's version of Peter Parker better. Andrew was OK in some scenes, especially in the suit as Spider-Man, but I don't think his Peter Parker should be a skateboarder and so cocky like that. Be cocky in the suit as Spidey is OK, but not out of the suit.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Why shouldn't he be a skater? How does that change anything? Garfield's Parker was more like the Parker of the 60s, who would always mouth off to the popular kids when they gave him grief. Maguire's Parker needed to turn evil before he became a smartass. A lot of people here don't seem to know anything about the character.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

^The character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is not necessarily "set in stone". There have been different interpretations of his character over the last 50 some years. That being said, I'm glad Sam Raimi did his version with Tobey Maguire first. If they didn't establish the uber dork side of Peter Parker first, I think that aspect of the character might have been lost forever. Andrew Garfields less dorky, more confident Peter Parker pre-spider bite is no less valid, some versions of the comics have him this way too, but if all we got was the cocky cool Peter Parker, that would neglected the mega nerd aspect of Parker/Spidey too.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

There was nothing likeable about Garfield's Peter is the big issue I take with him, I could care less about his arc in either of these two films.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

I don't see how his looks affect the performance, though. Garfield's Peter definitely came across as geeky, shy, a pushover, and a loner, which is attributable to the strong acting. It's not the looks, but the way he carried himself as under-confident and weird. Looks be damned, people will take notice of that!

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Yeah, plus Peter is 5'10" in the comics. Guess who else is 5'10"? That's right. Andrew Garfield. So Peter skates in this movie. So what? Skating is a pretty nerdy activity, regardless of what the general public thinks of it. Maguire didn't play a nerd so much as a movie/TV nerd. If he had started doing the snorty-laugh, I wouldn't have been surprised at all.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Even Garfield has said as much recently and is sad that he couldn't do more to overcome the awful writing.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

I don't understand why people say Andrew looked too old to play Peter. I bought him as a teenager much more than Toby. With that being said, I was turned off by his Peter Parker, I just found him too arrogant and obnoxious. Some scenes were too obvious as a show of his abilities when he is supposed to be keeping them a secret.

Superman & Wonder Woman

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Age had nothing to do with it. It was his mannerisms that annoyed almost as much as the terrible dialogue they forced him to say.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Andrew looked too old. Andrew looked his age, like a man his later 20s/early 30s.

Even though Tobey was around 25, 26 when he first started, he was more believable as a 17, 18 year old kid.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

And they only kept him around high school for the first half hour of Spider-Man 1 whereas Garfield's Peter already looked too old to be graduating high school in the beginning of his second film.

Re: Garfield was a terrible peter parker

Agreed except I don't find him attractive. I just thought he didn't fit it as well as Maguire did
