Music General : Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Really, his singing voice is super flat. He practically had no range at all. Do people really think that he was a good singer? I just listed to "High Hopes" and while I do like that particular song, his actual singing voice approaches bad.

Now, if people liked his singing because of personal style or something, that I could understand.

I first thought this when I was listening to Nancy singing "These Boots Are Made For Walkin", which is undeniably a fun song, but Nancy's voice is awful. Laverne DeFazio has a better ear.

Dean Martin was a better singer than FS (and much more likable a person - Frank seemed sour/brittle) and I actually liked Andy Williams' voice a lot.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I agree 100%. Dino was the best. His voice was like velvet.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Sinatra said Vic Damone had the best pipes in the business

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

He's definitely in that genre/style of music. Super easy-going. I like Vic Damone, but he's not quite as smooth, imo, as Dean Martin.

I listened to the song you posted and I knew I knew it from somewhere and I knew it was a woman's voice who had sang the song in my memory. It took me a minute and then I remembered that it was Meryl Streep who sang the song in "Postcards from the Edge". She has a surprisingly strong singing voice. Or perhaps not so surprisingly since just about everything Streep does, she does well. Though I doubt if she could ever do a really scary villain role!

From the Sinatra-Martin-Damone-Williams oeuvre, this one's my favorite.

I love it, one of my favorite songs!

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Well, we definitely have that in common! The song has a very unique sound to it. Almost hard to describe. Not quite breezy, not quite melancholy. Very catchy song, though, and kind of an emotional song in a way. Like being in Italy. (I don't know where that came from)

I've loved it since I was a kid and my dad would play Andy Williams records.

Let's not forget Nat King Cole!

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Oh yes! How can one forget Cole. He was sublime at times.

Same here, my parents would play it so it was bred into me 😊

This was another one

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I just listened to the TB song here. It was as pleasant as I've come to expect from this genre/style of music.

Tony's famous song is "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", isn't it?

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I think Nancy Sinatra only sang because her father sang and it was expected of her. That's why her only hit was the kitsch classic "Boots".

Frank Sinatra's style worked because it was almost casual, half talking, never crooning. Plus his material was pop jazz, rather than pop for pop's sake.

She did some decent duets with Lee Hazlewood though.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

You're right. I forgot. Those actually work.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Yes! I don't mind listening to Nancy, who I would choose over her dry and dreary father. He was perhaps a better actor than singer.

That was her biggie, but she didn't do too bad with these. I remember them playing several times a day on the radio…

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I suffered through Sinatra for the majority of my childhood. My dad loved him in his prime. Nearly every Saturday morning, awoken to his deadwood croon.

With Frank, he represented a certain style and class, but he was through and through a technical singer and robotic. The feeling wasn't genuine. It was the marvelous orchestrations that assisted in enhancing his singing, which I find mediocre at best. Distinct, just not exceptional.

Yes, there were much better male crooners I would choose to listen too over Sinatra. I liked Johnny Mathis and Dean Martin had more oomph than Frank and more fun to go with it I would say. He was after all buddies with Jerry Lewis.

Andy Williams could win one over and so could Jerry Vale, Perry Como and Engelbert Humperdinck. I do find Humperdinck a bit freaky looking.

Have you ever heard Tony Christie Mr. Hutch? He was perhaps my favorite to listen to in the 70's. I could feel what he sang.

Just like Leonard Cohen.
They excuse him by saying he is more of a poet.
Yeah, whatever.
He is attempting to sing or whatever you wanna call it on his SONGS.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Lol. Cohen had a beat aesthetic where voice didn't matter. I love Cohen though I hate every other folk singer.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I'm sure Leonard Coen had songs that I would have liked, BUT his score for "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" turns me off big time. The epitome of drab and dreary. I can't even be fair to the film because of his songs, and I am sure it is a good movie. Though I can't stand Warren Beatty. But then I love Julie Christie… And Robert Altman is one of my favorite directors.

Cohen is like Kris Kristofferson. Non-singers, who knew how to write songs and needed to stick to that. Kristofferson though, sailed by on his charisma and is a decent actor too.

I thought Humperdink was kinda hot. I like his lips

Johnny is one of my favorites too.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Mathis could sing the phone book and make it soar.

This clip is showing off Mathis at a young, adorably awkward phase. Not sure if he's miming and the audio is unbalanced, but its charming nontheless.

Love Johnny Mathis

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I have that video! He was absolutely adorable.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

Mathis tended to do great covers too of other artists songs.

Elanor Rigby and The Impossible Dream are both exceptional.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

I just got done listening to "Don't Go Down to Reno". I have never heard of Tony Christie before. I was very impressed by the song and Mr. Christie's voice. His singing was smooth and commanding, effortless, like Dean Martin and perhaps even a little bit more so. The song itself was catchy, too.

Thank you for the referral, Toasty.

This one My Love Song was a personal favorite:

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice…

I've heard that FS's singing voice had a range of ONLY two octaves. One of the persons with the LEAST range I've EVER heard was Scotty Mcy from 'American Idol' whose range was only two or three NOTES (NOT OCTAVES) which is LESS than a half octave, closer to a quarter octave.

I think he did

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

It's all a matter of opinion and personal tastes.

Everyone has different singing styles and a way of phrasing. Frank did it his way.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

This is where I become so torn.

Neither did any of the Beatles. John Lennon, especially, had a horrible, throaty voice. It's like nails on the chalkboard to me, but goodness he made some good music.

Today, there are no songwriters and instrumentalists. There are only capitalized and marketed singers.

They have an entire corporate team constructing their music around their image, but they have no talent for music themselves.

In a nutshell, I really want to bash on people who make it big with really terrible voices, but if they have the gift for writing great music, then I can't get too worked up.

Re: Frank Sinatra did not have a good singing voice

John's voice rocked. He sang with an American accent
