Murray Head : First white rapper?

First white rapper?

I just love the way he says "massage parlors" in the song "One Night In Bangkok." And history credits Vanilla Ice as being the first white rapper to hit the top ten. Revisionists credit Murray Head.

Re: First white rapper?

Agreed. I admire his spoken rap, it's so different and fresh compared to what we've got now. The words imply so much, let you figure it out on your own.

Re: First white rapper?

Vanilla Ice may have been the first white rapper to reach the top ten, bu he definitely was not the first white rapper. There was 3rd Bass, Everlast and Tarrie B, for starters. That said, I always liked "One Night In Bangkok" back in the day---I'd actually was more familiar with another version of the song by Tamara and the Scene--I think that's who did the remake in 1986---I liked both versions, though.

Re: First white rapper?

There were many white rappers having top ten hits before Murray. Adam Ant's "Ant Rap" made it to number 3 in 1981. Not to mention Debbie Harry and Blondie's "Rapture" in the same year which was a number one. Murray was about 3 years behind them. Hell, even Roland Rat had a hit with "Rat Rapping" a year before Murray did LOL
