Re: Favourite Steve McQueen film

Can never choose only one. My favorites would have to include The Sand Pebbles, Bullitt, and Love with the Proper Stranger.

The Blob
Love With the Proper Stranger
Baby the Rain Must Fall

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
Fasten Your Seatbelts….
It's Going To Be A Bumpy Night!

The Blob

Oh, I haven't seen The Blob since I was a kid, but I loved it then! It made a big impression on my young mind - and Steve McQueen did, too. The guy from the tv series Wanted Dead or Alive, which I watched every week.

The Blob

Somehow, I missed it as a kid I was in my late 20s when I finally got around to seeing it one afternoon on cable in the late 80s. While teenagers seem to have that aged look in old year books, Steve McQueen couldn't have fooled anyone. Still, it has a special place in my heart.
By the way, if you get the Heros and Icons channel, Wanted, Dead or Alive is on early each weekday morning.😊

Wanted Dead or Alive

Oh, I don't get that channel, sorry to say. But I'm glad to know the series is still alive and well. I haven't seen it since it was first on the air, and I wonder how I'd feel about it today. I have a feeling it stands up pretty well, especially with McQueen in the lead.

Btw, glad to see another fan of Love with the Proper Stranger. Thought he was wonderful in that and had great chemistry with Natalie Wood.

Wanted Dead or Alive

Too bad you don't get it. It really does hold up. He was great in that.

I really like him with Natalie Wood in that too 👍
Such a good actor. Too bad his personal life wasn't so good, but he did leave a legacy of a fine body of work.

Lots of titles to choose from.

The Blob will always be on the list.
I saw it in a drive-in in '58. Loved every minute. One critic called McQueen and Corsaut the oldest teenagers in history.

The Cincinnati Kid
Mostly for Edward G. Robinson's spellbinding performance. The man hardly moved a muscle and you couldn't take your eyes off him.

Papillion
Dustin Hoffman once opined (paraphrasing): There I was doing every actor's trick in the book and McQueen just sat there and got all the attention. Check out The Cincinnati Kid, Dusty, to see how it's done. (Big Hoffman fan, by the way)

And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

The Magnificent Seven. Awesome movie and he was awesome in it.

Re: Favourite Steve McQueen film

I love so many, as I noted earlier, but one of my favorites that doesn't get enough attention in my opinion is THE SAND PEBBLES, beautifully directed by Robert Wise with a solid supporting performance by Candice Bergan. And it was McQueen's only Oscar nomination, well-deserved for sure.

I also loved him in BULLITT, LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER, THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, and THE GREAT ESCAPE.

He left us way too soon.

The Great Escape

Re: Favourite Steve McQueen film

The Blog is fun, but Steve McQueen was a lousy actor.

No, I must disagree.

McQueen was a wonderful actor – maybe not one with the most range, like Olivier – but in the roles he played he was a master of showing everything in his expressions. He didn't need dialogue, though he handled that well when needed. But he was a master of acting with his expressions, born out of his careful, meaningful listening. In film acting, in many ways that is everything. Sometimes a look can tell the whole story.

No, I must disagree.

Well said. He seemed to have a certain visual presence, or "aura" about him that worked to his advantage in most all of his roles.

No, I must disagree.

Re: Favourite Steve McQueen film

Hard to pick just one. I liked him in most everything I've seen him in. And the responses here remind me there are a few notable films of his that I have yet to see.

Here are a few that haven't been mentioned yet, but ones that I personally liked a lot and deserve a shout-out:

Soldier in the Rain (1963), about a friendship between an Army master sergeant (Jackie Gleason) and a young country bumpkin buck sergeant (Steve McQueen)…

Never So Few (1959), about an O.S.S. detachment in WWII Burma, featuring Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Peter Lawford, Gina Lollobrigida et al

Junior Bonner (1972), about a veteran rodeo rider (McQueen) as he returns to his hometown of Prescott, Arizona, to participate in an annual rodeo competition.
