Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Brute Force (1947)

Hard core prison drama.

Burt Lancaster solidifies his image as a great actor and movie star with an intense performance and Hume Cronyn is unforgettable as a power crazed, sadistic head guard who tortures prisoners to the strains of classical music.

A violent, brutal and uncompromising breakout scene ends the movie on a bleak note and never goes soft focus on the audience.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Would the Movie "THE GREAT ESCAPE" also qualify as a Prison Movie in any way at all ?

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

I'd say yes to that one. The main characters are inmates in a prison camp, so yep it's a prison movie. Good call!

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Thank You for answering back and letting me know, I appreciate it. :)

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Always a go-to treat and a clever parody.

The 70's tended to have chicks in chain flicks set in more exotic and steamy locales, whereas the 80's kept some of the same formula and grounded them in depressing US penal locations.

Concrete Jungle - '82 can be fun, but I find it a bit slight and tacky to be exceptional as a cheap exploitative CIC flick. I much prefer Chained Heat - '83 with cutesy and sweet Linda Blair, Sybil Danning and Stella Stevens. This one is darker, ruder, grittier and even twisted.

I also recommend Hellhole - '85 with Ray Sharky and Mary Woronov, The Naked Cage - '86 and Vendetta - '86 which is perhaps the better acted of these 3. I think I may have suggested Hellhole to you before, because of Woronov. This one is set in a mental institute and Wicked Woronov performs experiments on nubile young patients.

NZ censor decision for banning Chained Heat upon intial release:
Board of Review decision replacing that of 9/11/83. Sec.28 the Board unanimously held the view that the film was injurious to the public good, because of its overall treatment of anti-social behaviour, cruelty, violence, crime, horror, sex and indecent and offensive language and behaviour, without any measure of redeeming merit. It is devoid of artistic merit and of no social culture or other value. Classified as objectionable by the Film Board of Review, this replaces the objectionable classification assigned by the Chief Censor of Films - see help page for more information.
It got a VHS release uncut in 1986 under a new chief censor and guidelines: R18 Content May Offend.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Yes, you did recommend "Hellhole" and I remember watching it a few years ago at the public library computer before I could get my own laptop. I enjoyed that one thoroughly.

I have always wanted to see "Chained Heat", but on YouTube all I could ever find was the sequel, with no Linda Blair.

So, it's up on here and I think that is going to be my viewing for this evening. I have no doubt that it will not disappoint.

Will eagerly await your verdict Mr. Hutch:

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Bad News Mr. Hutch! Chained Heat, @nimda ,there are only 2 versions up on here and the first one is different movie altogether, and the second one is dubbed in Spanish which only came up with a fuzzy image for me.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Yeah, I started watching it and it did not look like it was going to be a WIP film.

I guess it's going to be the 1978 MTV Carrie-type suspense "The Initiation of Sara" for tonight, with Kay Lenz and the dark-haired Morgan Brittany (who is very kind) and the blonde-haired Morgan Fairchild, who is snotty and bitchy!

See what happens when you are mean to those who are less fortunate than you are.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Unfortunately The Naked Cage isn't on here either, but Vendetta is.

🎅👍
The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are among my favorites.
I don't believe I have ever seen The Execution of Private Slovik.
I'll have to check that out after Christmas. These days, I'm watching all Holiday related movies and shows.

If I don't get around to it before Christmas, I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas, and all the best in the new year.

The Great Escape
Papillon
In the Name of the Father

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

"Caged Heat"
"Chained Heat"
"The Naked Cage"
"Women in Prison"
"Hellhole" (close enough to prison)
"Reform School Girls" (ditto and possibly my favorite comedy of all time)

I also thoroughly enjoy the episode of "Murder, She Wrote" where Jessica Fletcher investigates a murder inside a women's prison and almost gets shanked by a mean lesbian. That was hilarious.

I know it's not a movie, but my friend loved the 80s Australian show "Prisoner: Cell Block H". I've never seen it myself.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

That Ozzie Prisoner show was just so popular Downunder it ran for years on end.

Trashy, cheesy and even depressing fun.

Re: Favorite Prison Movies?

Escape From Sobibor (1987 TV Movie)

Based on the true story of the most successful prisoner escape from a German Death Camp in 1943.

Excellent performances from Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer. The low-key presentation does more to portray the horror of the camp than most ramped-up and often contrived action films, and the final sequence of the prisoners running through a mine field with machine gun bullets flying all around them is exciting, horrifying and one of the most heroic scenes ever committed to film.

A must-see movie.
