The people that appear to us in dreams are faces that we have ever seen. If in your dream you are an elite soccer player, each of the 100,000 faces in the crowd that cheers you belong to people who passed for old actors, fleeting classmates from school, a guy who rang the bell to sell an encyclopedia, a substitute teacher music that left the classroom crying, etc.

Of course, it is likely that we will see some that we do not recognize because they are of people that we saw perhaps only once, but our brain saved it, as it keeps the hundreds of thousands of faces that we see during our lifetime.

Interesting to think about. If I only saw 5 people in my life all those soccer fans would be those 5 people.

Maybe, maybe not. What about the monsters we see in our dreams? We've never seen them irl but they appear in our dreams…at least they appear in my dreams. Also, mysterious cities/neighborhoods and other strange places I've never been to often appear in my dreams. Subconscious memories from a past life, perhaps??

You likely saw them in a movie shot, or when you were on a road trip driving somewhere. Of course you're not going to remember it per detail.

I can imagine new faces while awake so it seems like the brain should be able to do it while asleep as well.

Perhaps you only think that you are imagining new faces while awake.

If I have dreams about strangers it is possible that I made them up since dreams are all about making things up anyway.
