The Ellen DeGeneres Show : Dr. Phil then Ellen, I don't get it? Can true fans please help me?

Dr. Phil then Ellen, I don't get it? Can true fans please help me?

So I posted something on the DP board but since that one probably gets less traffic I thought I could post it here for a response as well? I figure if you watch Ellen you most likely at least catch a glimpse of the end of DP from time to time, if not a full episode before Ellen begins.

These shows are so drastically different to me I really don't see the connection or how someone that enjoys Ellen would have anything to do with supporting DP. It goes from trashy, unethical exploitation of desperate people to a fun loving, tender hearted, empathetic philanthropist. Two polar opposites. I watch these shows because my wife enjoys them but from sort of an outside looking in perspective I don't get how someone could enjoy both?

I have only seen DP a few times but tonight confirmed everything I assumed about his unethical show:
My wife watches this show, came home just now from work and started watching tonight's episode about the marine and crazy wife, the wife was in tears talking about her inability to control her anger towards her husband and children.

Then she wipes her tears with a rag that has the Dr. Phil logo embroidered on it. I don't know how anyone, even if a major supporter of this show could possibly ignore the despicable choice to advertise at that moment.

Hey every time I make you cry on my show to boost ratings go ahead and use this complimentary rag that has my name on it. That way in the event that my audience is connecting or relating to you, losing themselves in your emotional moment this will snap them back and make sure they remember this is the Dr. Phil show.

I mean honestly?

This board doesn't get a lot of traffic either, especially in the summer months when Ellen is in reruns.

Anyway, not really sure what you're asking...or if you're asking anything, really...maybe you're just making an observation. In any event, I can say that I personally love Ellen. Cannot stand Dr. Phil. He's a quack to the nth degree.

Re: Dr. Phil then Ellen, I don't get it? Can true fans please help me?

I guess maybe I am not asking a question....just was in a bit of a ranting mood after watching a full episode of Dr. Phil for just about the first time.

From a glance and watching sporadic clips here and there I was already of the opinion that:

1. He is a dirt bag capitalizing on other people's misfortune/problems. Purely monetary motives, no real empathy or actual concern for people unless he earns a dollar at the end of the conversation.

2. He tells his guests how to fix things in his own opinion from only his high horse perspective rather than helping them find the answers themselves from within like a good therapist, coach, friend does. He has his mind made up, he is right so rather then listening to individuals he demands the change without promoting self reflection or buy in. Any therapist worth their sand would acknowledge that telling someone to do something because you said so will not produce healthy, sustained improvement.

3. He always finds fault in the males on the show; example for this episode was a wife spanking her son seven times in anger. According to Dr. Phil a key contributor to the mother's action was the father (also a guest on the episode) having an affair. According to Dr. Phil the father was also partly to blame because he should have had the courage to stop her from spanking the kid. Physically abusing your child out of anger is your fault every single time. Your misplaced anger may be the result of something other than the child but the choice to spank the child is your own. Again, I would expect that any professional in this field would first assist the person needing help with taking responsibility for their own actions. Blaming others is typically how most of these lost, confused, hurting individuals get themselves into the position of needing help; a blatant lack of accountability.

So having these poor opinions already didn't help but after seeing the Dr. Phil logo embroidered into the towel given to the guest to sob into put me over the edge. It just solidified my opinions and ensured that motives behind this show are not intended to help these poor people, this show is intended to exploit them for money. Are there a lot of shows out that that do this? Everywhere, all day especially with reality TV being so prevalent these days. The difference though, the reason this one is despicable by my definition is because this crosses a moral boundary and at the very least becomes unethical. Offering a professional's help in an effort to sucker hurt, desperate people in only to do the exact opposite and in turn make money off of them.

I do realize that with my feelings towards DP and his show I should be thankful that the board is unpopular and that there are not many supporters out there to disagree. However it is on TV for a reason, someone is watching and I'd really like to discuss with one of those people any differing opinions to those above. I do not intend to form an opinion and refuse to hear anyone else out, I may be wrong about these things. I would love to hear from an opposing side and find out what views or people find any reason to disagree or find any value in this show.

Didn't you say your wife enjoys and watches both shows? It would seem she would be the perfect person to ask.

Re: Dr. Phil then Ellen, I don't get it? Can true fans please help me?

Theres no deep meaning to Doctor Phil being before Ellen.

Its just a timing thing.

Its basically no difference than a channel playing a dramatic and emotional movie then after playing some raunchy comedy.

That's just what your region decided to do I guess, because where I live Ellen is on at 11am and Dr. Phil is on at 3pm.

Syndicated shows air at different times during the day all over the nation, so not everyone watches it after Dr. Phil. The one I watch at 4PM airs after The Andy Griffith Show. Things like lead ins and lead outs and similar programs being shown back-to-back on the same network are mostly done at night.
