Harrison Ford : Does he ever actually use his acting?

Does he ever actually use his acting?

Seriously he is one of the best known holywood actors of all time, yet I cant remember a single movie where he actually played an interesting character, everyone he plays is always just Harrison Ford.

I cant remember him ever performing anything other than the grumpy rougish type, can anybody recommend a movie where he actually acts? I want to see him do something different

Get up you son of a bitch, cuz mickey loves ya!!!

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Check out Regarding Henry and The Mosquito Coast if you want something a little different from Ford. :^)

We didn't arrive and we're not leaving. Forever is an idea created by the ego. You're here in time and everywhere in space, always.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Witness, as well. Also, to say that he always plays himself, or the same thing - everyone does that - Nicholson, Pacino, Johnny Depp - ugh, and certainly Robert De Niro.

Well I'll be goddamned! No one else in the history of movies has ever being similar in their roles other than old Harry.

Clint Eastwood in particular is great at playing gay roles and doing Shakespeare.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

I'm glad to hear people already pointing out some of his bigger acting achievements. But the thing is.. Harrison Ford by himself is already an interesting enough character to see on screen. I mean I know plenty of people who love seeing him on screen. He's the ultimate action movie hero. Looking at the bland faces of today's Jai Courtneys and Sam Worthingtons, this is more clear than ever. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Well the way things work with Directors, is to not stretch the actor, as they can't handle that much change and be realistic.

People are employed by their on screen persona.

The less is more, is what Nicholson began, what acting was very rigid in the old days.

Trust me if Harrison Ford began dancing and singing, trying to be Bollywood, he would be out of a job by the next film.

As you know with Hollywood, its largely the look of the person.

Sometimes it is the case that actors are employed if they "look" interesting, eyes, check-bones, hair, etc.

The voice and character often stays the same or slightly changed. I like Samuel l Jackson, Daniel Craig, and their characters are very similar.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

This may be the case to some extent, but I think with any actor something of their own personality comes through.

I just pay attention to one thing when watching any actor's performance in any given film (or TV show, or play): Is this actor convincing in this particular role? Am I buying them as this character? If the answer is "Yes," well, that's all that's really necessary, isn't it . . . ?

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

All the movies people mentioned pretty much feature a typical Harrison Ford character. He's not a character actor, he's a personality actor. But he does it well. The closest he ever came to branching out? Maybe his one scene in Apocalypse Now.....but that might have just been the glasses.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Best performance ever in the thriller Frantic - I can highly recommend this movie

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

The Fugitive. That is all.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Not sure what you mean by that...Ford is possibly not being himself at all. he could be acting, you just don't see it. And he has not always been grumpy, not that often at all. Hark back to Coppola's The Conversation; Heroes with henry Winkler, Mosquito Coast for sure. There are many others - even a Wall St. type in Working Girl.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Yes he does

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

I actually think Han Solo is among his best performances - he created a character that is arguably different than many of his other roles. Han is not grumpy, he is buoyant, charming, devil-may-care, very, very different than Deckard or Kimble or Book from Witness, even different from Indy (all excellent performances, btw), and probably different than Harrison himself. We all adore Han, the performance is top notch, unforgettable.

There is a reason why Han Solo is legendary character, and to a lesser extent, Indiana Jones too. Ford created them and his acting is there, seamless and perfect, but this doesn't mean non-existent. Han Solo is his best role and he should be have given some award for acting in that.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

He was great in Calista Flockhart.

Re: Does he ever actually use his acting?

Ditto on Mosquito Coast. He had a pretty decent Russian accent in U-571. Also Witness was his only Oscar nomination I believe. There was a time when he put effort into his acting before he turned into a perpetually stoned stroke victim.
