I read some of the books and Bond is not supposed to be nice or even very handsome. He's supposed to be a brutal guy.
Connery has the "I'll shoot you in the face" and make a joke then go have lunch quality. Moore has a smart and intelligent gentleman quality, in the more serious movies.
So, Connery is closer to the character.

The Maltese Falcon is a favorite film of mine. There were a couple versions of the film with Bogart being the most famous. I read the book and the main character is supposed to be built like a bear.

It was Ian Fleming who saw his creation, James Bond, as looking rather like Hoagy Carmichael, as taken from 2 of his novels:

James Bond is not supposed to be funny. So, Roger Moore was in more like satire films than real action movies. He was good in other things, however, he's more of a gentleman adventurer type than a cold assassin.
I watched some of The Saint TV show he was in and that part makes more sense for him.

I generally love the movies and can find something good about all of them.
I would like a dead serious Bond, with science fiction themes and gear though.
I also think if they want to add women and minorities, they should start a 00 series with other numbers. 005 and so forth can have their own adventures.
