The Walking Dead : Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

On the whole, sadly, I have to say I think they diminish intelligence. If you sat around watching only movies by Fellini, de Sica, and Kubrick, or documentaries on the environment, you might get more educated (if not more intelligent). But for most of us, watching rubbish like Transformers, what little intelligence we have takes a hit. Mind you, certain low-level kinds of intelligence may improve. We become quicker to react to visual cues of a certain type; but that just means we become smarter in the art of watching movies, nothing else.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

I like that you mentioned being more educated vs intelligence, because i think that's more the issue here. If you're intelligent then you could get something from anything, even just using reality tv to expand on the human condition- maybe not because of the content but just theorizing why it's even a phenomenon to begin with. And fictional movies could make you more empathetic.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Yeah, education is overrated. Look at the Comedone, who claims to have a Ph.D. Such an ass!

I agree that all kinds of movies could stimulate intelligence and empathy; but you'd have to be brought up in a certain way for that. If your parents and family were decent folks you'd probably learn from almost any kind of entertainment. But American pop culture seems to be indelibly (Sharpies used, huh?) racist and stupid, alas.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Huh? I never said education is overrated. But that you can't gain intelligence through education, it's the other way around.

That's what i meant, if you're emotionally intelligent (intelligent) then you will be able to be empathetic.

But because you're smart you can look at our reality tv and become educated on how racist and stupid we are!

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Butt if you're not intelligent you wouldn't get anything from a classical education. Or any kind really

Exactly!

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Education is a very ambiguous thing. It can certainly enhance your intelligence, but it can also make you even stupider than you were. Most specialists (I think especially of scientists and engineers) are among the dumbest people in the world, socially and culturally speaking.

You can't be sure. They might have made excellent cabbies or grocers, instead of helping make the world much less safe by pouring their energies into military armaments.

That's because the world has been on the wrong track (anti-environment, pro-capitalism) at least since the 18th century. Of course they get paid more.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Yes, i think done people have a greater capacity to learn and be educated because they're naturally more intelligent. I never said school was pointless, if you don't do anything with your intelligence then you'll be like bentley, working at taco bell

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

It's about 50-50. Uni is full of idiots, believe me. You need to be intelligent in order to know how to maximize the advantages of a university education.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

No, school will definitely make you more educated. But i do agree with b's response. The unschooling movement has always interested me too

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Have you read Illich? Deschooling society? Also Althusser on ISA's?

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

No, i haven't read his stuff but i've read about deschooling a bit. I don't think I'd do either for my kids, i like structure with a routine. But i think it's probably the best way for young adults -interest based learning. I mean, all knowledge that I've retained is only related to things I'm interest in so that makes sense to me.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Yes, one wants one's kids to fit in well, so they should go to regular school. But I think parents have to work hard to compensate for the crap they learn in school.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

They're actually homeschooled in a group. But it still pretty brick and mortar education style

I couldn't agree more. Especially american public schools. The kids have so much busy work and bs just because the teachers can't handle 30 kids, understandably.

Didn't mark twain say something about not letting school get in the way of your education? I like that. I like him. He had a cat

Twain was great. Huck Finn was one of my heroes growing up.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

That’s true, a lot of teachers baby sit and don’t actually teach.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

I don't think it's their fault. But in classrooms with 30 plus kids, a lot of it is just busy work for the kids, there's no way for them to give each kid the attention they need. We need more teachers and they should get paid more!

Or just let them play minecraft, whatever

We'd have no doctors, lawyers, or politicians, much less anyone in any career without teachers, yet they get treated like shit, paid like shit, and have horrible work hours, and horrible working conditions, and have to deal with parents who think their little snowflake is always right and immune from the teacher's discipline.

Lol sooooo true!! It's a shame that we don't invest in teachers. It's investing in kids, and the future of the country. You'd think people would care more

Really? That's cool, b. It seems like it would be so draining. My mother-in-law was an English high school teacher for a long time. She talks about those days like she has ptsd lol. Now she teaches at a community college and she loves it.

I lasted exactly a year. Exhausting! Plus I used to get the giggles when I was teaching. Very embarrassing.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

I'm just jumping into the conversation here - but I think that people go to college or universities thinking the mere act of doing so will make them "smart" or "intelligent," but that's simply not the case.

One can memorize and/or regurgitate information, but that doesn't make them "intelligent." It also doesn't make them "smart." One also needs to differentiate between "smart" and "intelligent."

Someone can be "book smart" and have no intelligence whatsoever; dumb as a box of rocks. That little piece of paper you get upon graduation doesn't always translate to anything except that you've invested money and time in sitting in a classroom.

There needs to be a degree, or layers of them, of intuition and gut instinct, and a strong interest that keeps you engaged and a desire to continue to learn beyond what you invest in those years of schooling.

I've never heard of "unschooling" but now I want to look it up.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Lilith! You've hit the nail on the head! I always love the way you word things because it's just what I'm thinking but have trouble articulating lol. I totally agree

Unschooling is interesting to me because it's letting the student decide what they want to do. And sometimes they learn all subjects from one thing they're interested in, like project based learning. I think some people take it too far because the philosophy is that kids will learn everything when they want to, but there are high school age unschoolers who can't do basic math.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

For some reason, I wasn't able to copy & paste her page, but I've seen this young lady blossom, and I've seen her work. Check this out. Now SHE would make a fantastic female role model mascot of one of those extremely natural and very healthy cereals. You've simply GOT to read about Akiane:

https://akiane.com/about-akiane/

PS: I brought her up because if I'm not mistaken, her parents let her do this as her career and she is "home schooled" based on allowing her to follow her dreams and what makes her happy, letting her learn at whatever pace she wants, and to study what she feels is important to her. I watched a documentary on her which is where I got this from, but be forewarned, I might be confusing her with someone else who is being "unschooled" and doing something fantastic with their life that is awe-inspiring.

Either way, click the link and read about her and check out the video (it's rather short). She's pretty amazing.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

She's ridiculously talented! The way she speaks so passionately about god and her work is really inspiring too, just seeing someone feel so focused and motivated.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

She sounds so sincere and authentic, doesn't she? Such sincerity, so in-depth, and it really does feel like she's tapped into something so deep and rare. At least she believes she has, and her paintings reflect that.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

She really does, It's moving to me and I'm not very religious. You can tell this means a lot to her. When she said how she wanted to be like jesus and then reaffirmed "i will be" her conviction was tangible. She might be small but there's a lot going on there

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Sorry, i just saw the ps lol

I think tis is the perfect example of kids that would be great at unschooling from an early age. If they are really talented at something and love it then why not go all in.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Did you say that because i make fun of formal, expensive education?! You know i only do that because you're a fancy professor! I think education is the best

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

Yes, I've become sensitive about how educated I am. I just sit around looking at my degrees and crying.

Re: Do movies increase or diminish intelligence?

And sometimes you wrap them around yourself like a safety blankie that no monsters and get through! They come in handy -i hear!
