Correct pronunciation of Latin

Re: Correct pronunciation of Latin

I took two years of Latin in high school. I was going to take a third year, and then I came to my senses and dropped it.

Re: Correct pronunciation of Latin

I tried to teach myself Latin some time ago but I didn't learn much. Then I though about learning another modern language. I tried several so far but I haven't been able to choose a single one so I always end up not learning any new languages

Stop spying on me weirdos. I don't like you. You get what I willingly share. Don't spy on me.

I don't even know why you bothered. Your friends already thought they were cooler than the fat black woman, right?

So, there's no need for you to be spying on the fat black woman.

Re: Correct pronunciation of Latin

Anyone who wants to learn to write good English should take 4 years of Latin in high school. It gives you a strong grounding in language structure, and that includes English grammar. It also increases your vocabulary since all the English "big words" come directly from Latin.

Re: Correct pronunciation of Latin

I'm trying to learn French right now. After that, I would like to learn a language with a completely different grammatical structure. Far away from the Romance branch. I think Linguistics is my new passion.

Greek or Russian!

I took French in college. What's odd to me is that the Franks were a Germanic tribe, yet their language became Romance, not Germanic like English. French is a beautiful language and it flows wonderfully by blending words and dropping consonants.

That sounds like Neville Gwynne speaking. There used to be an ideal to mold English grammar to Latin grammar, in order to make English more "exalted", somehow. That's how you got silly artificial rules, such as "never end a sentence with a preposition", and suchlike. Shakespeare, living in a time before this snobbish pedantry, was happily not affected.

It is certainly true that a great portion of English vocabulary stems from Latin, but the grammar does not. There is nothing you can learn about English structure from Latin, because English is a West Germanic language.
