Bill Withers had an interesting path to musical stardom

He only started playing guitar in his 20s after he saw that musician Lou Rawls was making a lot more money than him and getting more women. Eventually he recorded a demo tape while working at a factory making bathroom parts for 747 aircrafts. Later he recorded an album for an independent label and continued working at the factory, until he was laid off. Johnny Carson's bookers would hear the album and invite him on Tonight Show and Bill Withers became a star.

He wrote all of his hits after turning 30, which is unheard of. Most musicians primes are in their early to mid 20s. Had he learned guitar earlier it's a wonder how many more great songs he could have written.
