Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

Here are some that come to mind for me

Omar, The cast of The L Word. Would also like to include the cast of the UK version of Queer As Folk but that was between 99-2000 don't know if it would qualify for what this thread is asking for. More recently I think Orange Is The New Black has had some very memorable characters that happen to be gay.

That stereotype holds true and there's nothing wrong with that.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

I watch mostly crime, thriller and horror series, so I only know how gays are portrayed in them. In True Detective's 2nd season there is a gay main character playing by Taylor Kitsch who is ex-military black ops mercenary.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

Positive masculine portrayals? Well, maybe those brave gay gladiators from Spartacus

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

How about portray just a normal gay guy who doesn't bitch, camp or swish?
It's been done and early on. That American audiences wouldn't buy in was the issue. I remember John Goodman played a gay central character on a short-lived TV show and there was a small-town couple who ran a diner in a Norm McDonald series (and I'm blanking on the name of one, but he played the dad in Raising Hope, name starts with 'G'). That same guy played a great gay character in Leap Years, also short-lived, a series that followed multiple timelines covering decades in the lives of the characters, so one episode would bounce between when he was closeted and married and years later, when he was out.

That's not a media issue. It's an American one. Not an issue in Canadian shows or in British ones past, say, 1990. Even so, it's changing in the US. Look at Captain Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

All roads lead to truth if you're willing to travel honestly.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

As a straight man who has dozens of openly gay friends and is a strong ally of the LGBTQIA community, I can tell you that art imitates life. Most gay males are campy and bitchy, they are really into fashion and design, love to travel, and generally speaking have an appreciation for the finer things in life. That's why they're portrayed that way on TV. I will say that it's a myth that all gay men are weak, but while a lot of queens are in great shape they certainly can't put up much of a fight.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

You have the wrong friends, then. Don't stereotype us all because you like to hang out with prissy men. I know more gay men that can take a hit as well as throw one than I do straight men who can do the same.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

I like villain characters more:

1."Oz"
Chris Keller (Christopher Meloni) - manipulative demented sociopath

2."Dexter"
Isaac Sirko (Ray Stevenson)- Ukrainian mobster

3."American Horror Story"
Stanley (Denis O'Hare) - devious con artist

4."The Borgias"
Michelotto Corella (Sean Harris) - mercenary in service to Cesare Borgia

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

I would put Omar Little at the top. Omar was an awesome TV character, and The Wire was an awesome show. David Fisher is the other character I would consider in the same league. Both were significant key characters on amazing TV shows.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

Connor from "How to Get Away With Murder".

From the shows I've seen on your list though...all great choices.

Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair.

Re: Best male gay TV characters since 2000

Can't help but disagree with a couple of the list though. Especially if they're listed in order.

I think the following do deserve some appreciation as well (though they might not be in the top 10):

Marc St. James (Ugly Betty), Lafayette (True Blood), Calvin Owens (Greek) and Julien (the Shield).
