Actors and Actresses : Actress You Feel Sorry For

Actress You Feel Sorry For

Liza Minelli

Whether she's Pookie or Junie, I always feel sorry for her. I guess its her face.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Sylvia Sidney

Same reason.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I just googled her, and sure I've seen her. Lots of varying pictures.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Depending on how she was photographed/lighted, she had large eyes and a heart-shaped face. When shadows hit her the right way, she had a vulnerable, waif-like quality to her. Not beautiful in the traditional sense, but cute.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Gina Carano

I don't agree with her Politics but she did not deserve to get fired from "THE MANDALORIAN".

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Liza looked tortured all the time and super nervous.

I would love to know who was doing what to her and why.

She was around when I was a little kid and even then I picked up that something was wrong.

Brittany Murphy is someone I think about once in awhile.

She was cute and ended up dying weirdly. I think from drugs.

She married an ugly fat guy, for whatever reason, then he died shortly thereafter.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Liza's mother is another one, even more so. Judy Garland was pretty, very talented, but if you see her in the amazing movie, "A Child Is Waiting" (I'm guessing you have, being psychological), you'd think she was playing herself. Such a vulnerable role, she was great in it.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I saw that movie.

I forgot Judy Garland was her mom.

I was always a fan of the actors but saw it years ago and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Judy had many psychological issues and so she must have been an odd mom. I read that Burt Lancaster was a crazy hetero and homosexual predator toward everyone he worked wth so I can only imagine what was happening with that movie.

Liza ended up with a couple of homosexual men as partners so she was likely a very confused person from all of the people she was around as a kid.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Yeah, I read that, too.

It's a hell of a movie. One of the two movies John Cassavetes did for a studio after making his first, "Shadows" which must have influenced the French New Wave, which was also influenced by the Italian neo-realism movement. I remember one novelle vague directors mentioning the 1954 movie, "Little Fugitive", which might still be on YouTube. Very good movie, and pretty unique.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Wow!

I love classic movies and have never heard of "Shadows" and so I need to look that up. The same goes for Little Fugitive.

I am also interested in these European film movements and what they mean. However, I have only been able to see what I can because of the limitations of finding them.

I live in Philly and we used to have a great theater running foreign films then it changed to American indie crap.

Amazon has lots of movies if you know the names so I will check that or youtube, thanks.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

You're welcome!

On YouTube, a few great movies on there is
-They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
-The Battle of Algiers
-A Woman Under The Influence (my favorite Cassavetes)

One thing about Cassavetes (and Altman) is that the subsequent viewings are always more interesting. They never spoon-fed their audience, so you might not catch everything on the first viewing. "Shadows" isn't a favorite of mine, but I like to check out a director's filmography chronologically.

"Minnie and Moskowitz" is also on YouTube, which is the first movie of his I saw about 15 years ago. I went through some frustration because it wasn't the typical formulaic movies, where everything is nice and neat, where every problem is solved, where all human behavior is clear cut.

Italian Neo-Realism
-Vittorio De Sica (Umberto D, Shoeshine, Bicycle Thief)
-Luchino Visconti (La Tera Trema, Bellissima, Rocco And His Brothers)
-"La Strada" (Fellini) is my #2 all-time, but after 1960, I think his movies weren't so good.

I think the labels sometimes stifle movies, and instead of a director's vision, they might do a few things to jump on the latest bandwagon. New American indie movies will have some in b&w, or very slow-paced, for no reason, besides thinking OTHERS will intellectualize them for him.

"Payday" is a good fun movie also on YouTube.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I have only recently realized that youtube has a lot of older movies and they are free.

I love Film Noir and there's lots of stuff I haven't seen and that was never on Turner.

Speaking of which, I have only seen one film you mentioned here!

I looked up Woman Under the Influence and that sounds like a classic 70s film. You would not find the same subject matter today or the theme which is just putting up with what life serves you.

I can't picture Peter Faulk in that!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

You're welcome, and if you like Noir, I'd recommend my favorites

-Ace in the Hole
-M (original German version)

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I never saw M and want to.

Concrete Jungle is a favorite of mine because it's based on Adlerian psychology! I believe that's on youtube.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Haha!

Concrete Jungle is some female prison movie!!

I meant Asphalt Jungle by John Huston.

I always call it the wrong name.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

That's a good movie, by one hell of a director (and actor).

I always associate that movie with "The Killing" (1956, Kubrick)

https://www.scribd.com/document/382737647/MortSahlFan-Song-List

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I have watched The Killing multiple times.

It has that same cold hearted cast of characters.

I like modern superhero movies and so on but I wish we could have some stories like they did in the past. Woman Under the Influence would never be made today.

I have noted some Bruce Willis B movies that are Film Noir, they aren't great, but B Movies are like the last stand for actual stories taking place on Earth.

I don't know what the shift is all about. I assume a lack on interest in investing in writers.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

You know, feminists protested "A Woman Under the Influence" then, because Mabel didn't have a career where she aspired to be a CEO. Joining a group to become an individual is a new one. 53% is the largest minority I ever heard of!

I don't think I've seen any superhero movies. Then again, I don't watch many new movies, but I have lately just because I'm running out of things to watch and notice the only good ones I ever see are non-English.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

I'm not religious but I used to enjoy the old religious movies that were popular, Ben Herr, The Robe, and the many Bible and Jesus movies. Superhero movies are the same kind of thing.

A Woman Under the Influence, from what I read, is clearly not about having a career, lol. It seems like the entire point of the movie is putting up with life no matter what it gives you.

That's what I got from the synopsis. It's the husband's story about wanting a certain kind of life, not getting it no matter what you do, and then putting up with the results.

That's a metaphor for life.

We are probably not getting a variety of films today because the people criticizing them don't get the message. Due to the internet, we are now dealing with teenagers attacking public figures as they view comments, works, etc in black and white.

I was on another forum talking about psychology with people. I was getting astounded by how stupid the comments were. It turns out that I was talking to teens and not adults working in psychology.

So, a child is not going to understand a movie like A Woman Under. That's a movie for like 40 or 50 year olds. People of that age seem to generally bow out of discussion and so I guess there isn't much of a market or ability to safely sell stories about complex topics.

Back in the 70s the film studios released what they wanted and didn't get much feedback.

I'll reserve my comments about my interpretation of the movie until after you've seen it. I'm in my 30s, and I know people much younger than me who have seen these kinds of movies.

Even when the "dinosaurs" controlled the studios, they liked movies. Now, the ones in control only care about money, and going with the trendy bullshit. Studios took chances back then.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Drugs and psychological problems most probably.

😺 Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 🤨 Let's go, Brandon! 🤨 Try that in a small town.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Yes.

I have a very good memory and can recall seeing her on TV as a kid. She had very crazy ultra nervous energy I thought was scary and sad at the same time.

I believe she must have been on Broadway a lot because she was on TV for award shows more than on programs. She was on of those people in the 70s who was a guest on shows a lot because that's about it.

Strange woman.

Yep.

Actress You Feel Sorry For

1, All of those girls who made it big by ending up on the proverbial casting couches.

2, All of those girls who tried and didn't make it because they wouldn't make it with Mr. Big.

You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

Jesus Christ is Lord ✝️

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

And definitely Marilyn Monroe

Jesus Christ is Lord ✝️

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

Kristen Stewart, for her lack of acting talent.

Re: Actress You Feel Sorry For

None of them really.

They make more money than I ever will in 5-10 lifetimes or more.
And if they are fucked up and don't get help that is on them.

I could feel sorry for Linsanity Lohan but that bitch blew it and that is all on her.
She had multiple chances to get clean and straight and she never did.
Same thing for Carrie Fischer.
"Oh, let's feel sorry for Princess Leia!"
Fuck that.
Bitch didn't get it right and killed herself for it.

I just don't give a fuck over anyone I don't know so fuck this bullshit question.
