Economics, Business, Money, Finance : A job dilemma

A job dilemma

I am considering 2 jobs. The first one pays $18hr and is willing to take me tomorrow. The second pays $25 but due to the nature of the position requires a thorough background check that can take 2-3 weeks. I am going to take the first one to keep some income coming in but I am keeping my hat in the ring for the second. If I get it should I give the guy who was kind enough to hire me right away and is desperate for help a 2 week notice? I don't want to risk losing the offer for the higher paying job if I can't start right away but I don't want to burn bridges with the first employer either.

Advice?

Re: A job dilemma

The other employer should understand that giving notice is the right thing to do

As for the first employer, I would feel bad but it's understandable to go with the one that pays more

Re: A job dilemma

Can you afford to go 2-3 weeks without income and wait for the higher wage offer?

Never, ever burn bridges. Two weeks notice should always be given.

Re: A job dilemma

I've burned bridges by not giving notice. Employers will fire you on the spot and they don't care about how it affects you

Re: A job dilemma

I don't suggest not burning bridges as a courtesy to your employer; I say it because if you can't make it 2-3 weeks without income you're not exactly in a great position – meaning you never know if that job at which you turned your nose up may become a saving grace down the road.

Very true… I haven't always done what's best

Re: A job dilemma

If you can, take the second job and wait. But, at the end of the day: do what you gotta do to stay afloat.

I would personally still give notice but you also run the risk of them dropping right away.

At the end of the day, you will never put job #1 on your resume once you start job #2, so it’s not going to kill you to burn that bridge unless job #2 falls through

This is a fair point. It may not even register as a "burned bridge" if it's a job you held for 2-3 weeks.

Re: A job dilemma

Thank you to everyone for the advice. No I could not hold out for the 2nd job. My finances wouldn't last long enough. I will start job 1 in the morning. With any luck I will get positive news from job 2 in a few weeks.
