Special and Visual Effects : 3D too dark !

3D too dark !

Hi there !

I recently saw Tim Burton's Alice in a quite large theatre. The picture was annoyingly way too dark.
Ok, the projector used in this cinema seemed to be just enough for such a large screen, this is a fact.

But another fact is that the glasses we have to wear for 3D movies work like a grey filter, wich is about 30% black. It means that the movie is always going to be seen 30% darker than the normal brightness... And this is regardless of the projector's power.

In my opinion, 3D movies should be post-treated taking heed of this additional "filter".

They are, it's just not enough to offset the polarization. I saw Avatar in 2D and 3D to compare the difference, as interesting as 3D is, it doesn't offer enough to counter what you lose wearing the glasses in my opinion. But hey, I'm a bit of a purist.

Re: 3D too dark !

I work in the industry and the light level is a HUGE problem. 2D Digital gives you 14.5 foot lamberts of brightness. 3D gives on average 4 foot lamberts. The industry is aware of this and working hard to solve the problem but they are desperate to keep it quiet. They believe most people can't tell the difference in quality so well done guys.
