The Big Sick - 8/10
A Judd Apatow production featuring a smarmy Pakistani and a female with a gummy smile is enough to strike The Fear into me, but this movie just works splendidly. Witty, understated and tremendously endearing, it starts off in standard humorous rom-com fashion, then progresses into a darker affair with substance. It sucked me in from beginning to end. Since the excellent Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, 99% of Apatow productions have been the worst case of aids imaginable, but this strikes the right note. Like Funny People, it's a strong recent Apatow affair. 60% of the time it works every time.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 9/10
Martin McDonagh gets another home run. In Bruges is one of my favourite movies and this feels like the spiritual followup, albeit with much darker content. Featuring an enormous plot twist early on, you never know quite where this movie's going; but the real draw is the stellar performances from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell - two of the standout performers of our times. Sam Rockwell in particular is just an acting genius. Upon its release, it received significant criticism from the left. In the utmost salient fashion though, they were delivered the ultimate roshambo as it scooped awards left, right and centre. The same people whine about The Simpsons and Friends - two of the most innocuous shows ever conceived - being politically incorrect and they should be kerb stomped back to oblivion where they belong.

It Comes at Night - 8/10
Ladies of Filmboards fear not, this is not a movie about Bongoman. The lead Joel Edgerton is an actor I really like - and he's on form here. As Alfred Hitchcock once said, '"There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it," and this is personified here. The horror genre is one bastardised beyond belief, relying on silly jumps and gore and never really being particularly scary. The horror here though is brewing and unclear, somewhat reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing. It's claustrophobic, tense and captivating. Will rewatch.

Annihilation - 5/10
On paper I should have liked this: it has the Jewish Goddess Natalie Portman, Alex Garland's ideas are often interesting and always with excellent cinematography, but like his previous effort Ex Machina it just falls short. It starts off interestingly enough, but regresses into duller and duller territory, before concluding with a ridiculous mishmash of nonsense that not even the alien rape scene could redeem.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Your rating of It Comes At Night makes me happy, I think that you and I may be the only people who seemed to like that movie, but I found it claustrophobic and unsettling, in a good way. I am a big fan of Joel E., as well.

My theory is that the name threw horror movie fans off – nothing in the film comes at night, unless you count fear and doubts about the motives of your fellow human beings.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

It's the type of horror movie I really like. You might want to check out the movies Ti West makes. Innkeepers and House of the Devil are quite similar in terms of simmering horror that doesn't resort to clichés.

I'm going to see A Quiet Place at the cinema tomorrow. I don't really know anything about it other than it has really high ratings and Jim from The Office made it. Hopefully it's of a similar vein.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

I just saw this last night after reading these comments from the two of you. Totally agree with the 8/10 rating and the comparisons to The Thing as far as the mounting dread and pervasive uncertainty throughout, the tension at points was palpable. I had a friend a while back - who ordinarily has similar taste to mine - go on at length how much they didn't like it which was the only reason I didn't see it sooner. I'm now at a loss for why and couldn't disagree more. Anywho, movies that don't set out to explain and spoon-feed every little detail and motive to the audience are pretty uncommon these days. Less is more, so long as everything is cohesive and what information you are getting makes sense.

Have a few minor complaints about the way they went about casting doubt on the sincerity/trustworthiness of Will, but it didn't detract from the overall experience. An example that springs to mind is when he slips up halfway through the film about having a brother, which just begged the question why, if he was lying (which it's heavily implied he was, given his reaction), did he ever throw that in the mix in the first place? It did nothing to aid in selling his story to Joel's character, imo. Could've easily just said "it's just me and my wife/son out here."

Could see myself watching it again. Also have yet to see that Joel E. guy in a role I didn't like.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Have you seen Joel Edgerton's The Gift? Much of it feels a solid 7/10 US horror experience, but the ending . Decent movie.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

The Gift was good. Very smart.

Very nice! No I haven't. I'll check that out, thanks!

I liked everything in that film.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Lol

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Let me ask you, what were the young couple up to? No good?

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

I've watched a boatload of movies since then so I hope I'm not forgetting some pivotal details. And hopefully this doesn't get too long, but just in case - the tl;dr (also, SPOILERS):

My interpretation is they were sincere. I'll dissect and outline my reasons why further below but you may not want to read that if you plan to re-watch and wade through it yourself. We're not given a good timeline of how long Will and his family are with Joel (that I remember) nor whether the illness HAS to be passed through direct contact and/or signs are shown immediately, or if it can be dormant for a while (we're told only that in one case symptoms were shown within 24 hours). I think Will genuinely heads out in search of water, possibly already aware that his son is infected but knows they can't do anything about it–or maybe they don't know and it just happens later–but the way the kid drops his head at the dinner table when they're first acquainting themselves and Will/his wife seem perturbed by it implies they may have known. They join with Joel to make the best of the situation, and then the little kid infects the teenager - you take Will at his word on everything and the teenage son, having hallucinated about leaving the house throughout the movie (due to contracting the sickness) is the one who took the keys and unlocked the red door in his hazy state and simply doesn't remember it (injured dog wanders in after the fact, so on and so forth). Which in a way makes it all the more tragic since Joel's distrust is misplaced, albeit honestly.

The main points of contention that might speak to nefarious intentions are basically:

1) possible slip-up/lying about the brother
2) instinctively shouting in protest of Joel finishing off the guys that just attacked them
3) the violent death of the dog as possibly being due to friends of theirs waiting in the wings out in the forest
4) the red door that only Joel/wife had keys to being inexplicably ajar in the middle of the night (and of course, the ending sequence that leads to their eventual deaths although I think that one is easily explained as just them having their backs to the wall and wanting to ensure they could leave peacefully).

I think the first two are satisfactorily explained away by Will even if a bit questionable, but I can't think of a scenario with the dog dying in the way that it did that doesn't look really fishy and make it sound like they weren't working with other people and ransacking/killing anyone they found. Maybe it was a wild animal? The door only has one possible explanation to me because anything else is easily ruled out:

It wasn't the kid because they make a point to comment on how short he is and I doubt someone his age could make his way into Joel's room and take them without making a ruckus, and it wasn't Will/his wife attempting to flee or let someone else in because Joel's son glances in their room and they're both asleep; there's no reason they would have opened it and laid back down or unlocked to let other people in and not at least stayed awake to assist in any "takeover" scenario. I think it was the teenager, in his hallucinatory state unknowingly trying to wander out – even though it's later presented symbolically as him passing from life to 'death', I see no reason to assume he wasn't trying to get outside in his compromised mindset. You could even postulate actual sleep walking accompanies the illness/dreams, which would explain Joel/Will's son both seemingly doing it.

I think either interpretation kind of works and now that I write it all out it's just as easy to see the whole thing as shady, but my gut impression after finishing it was they weren't up to no good.

Great film!

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Thanks for that!

I like the interpretation about who opened the door. In the end, then, its Joel's overprotectedness that dooms them all, given it was the virtual imprisonment of the teen that led to this.

You didn't mention the almost-seduction by the young woman, which was creepy.

I saw the film an even longer while ago, but I thought at the time that the young couple were up to no good and then maybe changed their minds or decided to go with the flow, until the boy fell ill. The brother thing was WAY too shady.

BTW I liked how the layout of the house was kept deliberately unclear and odd.

Jesus, I need to watch this movie again! This is very intelligent and detailed analysis.

Holy crap, we were into that film! I need to watch it again.

Thank you for talking to me

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

I loved the film as well.

It's something that every Man and every Family can relate to.

I saw in a "Black" theater so the idiots talked and madr jokes the whole film.

I still thought it was an excellent film.

I also Think Joel E. is cery talented.

The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - 7/10. Fun, fast, not quite at Fifth Element levels but still pretty enjoyable.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

You know a pretty good movie I saw recently? Jumanji starring The Rock . I was dragged to it by the gf with a severe hangover in full expectation of misery, and it was actually surprisingly good. Would get a solid 6/10 from me. One to watch with the family.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Same kinda thing…

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Agreed!

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Same thing happened to me. A friend's grandchildren wanted to see it, so I went reluctantly. I was pleasantly surprised. Not bad. I give it a 6.9. We always have
a great time with the grand-kids. They're a hoot, and it was fun watching it with
them!

I just saw this! Didnt expect it to be that funny. So hysterical with Jack Black teaching Gillan how to flirt.

Annihilation - 9.5/10
This was an amazing film imho. I was left afterwards in a state of stunned awe. Seriously.

A Quiet Place - 8.5/10
An excellent and very tense thriller.

Three Billboards… - 8.5/10
A fantastic movie, and yes they knocked it out of the park.
I also loved In Bruges.

Funny Games - 7.0/10
A flawed but very tense film. This was the American version. The Austrian version is winging towards my house from Netflix as I type.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Fair enough that you loved Annihilation - different strokes for different folks. It's totally my type of film, but just didn't work for me. Have you seen Sunshine, which Garland also wrote? I didn't like the second half, but the style and soundtrack…wow! Him and Boyle make a good team.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Yes I liked Sunshine a lot, but the end kind of fell apart for me. The music and style are both amazing.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

Sunshine would be one of my fave movies of all time if they hadn't made it a horror/slasher/thriller at the end.

Re: *******RATE the latest movies you've SEEN!!!!!*******

The ending was weak. Danny Boyle's involved in a new show starring Donald Sutherland called TRUST. It has lukewarm reviews.

The Big Sick..8/10
I loved the casting and the pace.

Annihilation…5/10
Some things didn't add up, i never like jennifer jason leigh in anything (i just dont) there were a couple of cool things (shepherd's scream/voice; and when Natalie's character sees the replay footage that the 'husband' took.) But it was a forgettable story.

Happy Anniversary…7/10
Good script, i liked the 2 leads alot and i like that kind of humor. Fun to watch.

Glad you mentioned this because I completely forgot about it. Armando Iannucci is a Scottish legend - created Alan Partridge with Steve Coogan and also The Thick of It. I haven't properly tried Veep yet, but heard good things.

A Quiet Place - 8/10

John Krasinski is a chap I have always admired, playing the legendary Jim from The Office. I have little idea what he's done since, but he's been boning Emily Blunt, so he's obviously winning at life. This is a confusing movie to rate. It makes the classic modern horror faux pas of showing the monster FAR too early, openly and frequently. Yet it's still an extremely subtle, moving and empowering story. The dialogue is minimal and the plot reminds me of the gaming masterpiece The Last of Us - telling a bleak, but sentimental tale in a post-apocalyptic world. My experience was only hampered by the munter of a Tinder bird I went with, who duped me with the most ridiculous myspace angles imaginable - and the obese woman three seats beside me who kept saying, 'FUCK, FUCK, FUCK'! throughout, then proceeded to explode in tears at an emotional moment. The theme is also extremely similar to the Black Mirror episode Metalhead, but fortunately isn't completely shit like it was. It's simple, engrossing and engaging. Worth the praise…just about. Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.

28 hotel rooms 7/10
I rated it kind of high because i really like dialogue movies. Its sort of hollow though and the romantic relationship could have been explored a little more to give it more meaning so the viewers would care a little more about the fate of their relationship.
