Wolf Creek : Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I'm curious - how do you respond to movies like this? I'm also curious how men and women respond.

I'm a guy. Horror movies make me angry rather than scared. Normally I'm a gentle person, but watching movies like this I can't help but think about what I'd like to do to the bad guy! Very out of character for me.

Enough about me. Tell me about you! Also don't forget to mention if you are male or female.

Hey, Dude. It was a fictional film.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

It was based on actual murders committed by Ivan Milat.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

No, it was very loosely based on them. There is not much in common.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Milat

While the film is loosely inspired by the Backpacker murders that took place in the 1990s, it was marketed as being "based on true events".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_Creek_(film)

Read the Discussion page for Wolf Creek where people dispute this, and also say that was only said for marketing purposes.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Mick Taylor was sort of like a cross between Ivan Milat and Bradley John Murdoch.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Based on real killers. Google Ivan Milat.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Nope, really happened in Australia, they guy was insane and they have no idea how many people he offed! At least 7 were found buried in the forest!

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Male, 22.

Pretty much the same - angry - and also the WHY DID YOU DO THAT YOU STUPID YOU at the protagonist(s).

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Neither. For me, practically everything I watch is either a character study, or a lesson on 'what' and 'what not' to do in certain situations.

But I do wonder if a character like Mick ever spared one of his potential victims. Or if these kids could have done anything to prevent what Mick eventually did to them.

Really? You managed to watch a film like this and have no emotional reaction at all?

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Really? You managed to watch a film like this and have no emotional reaction at all?

I had a number of emotional reactions, but none of them were 'fear' or 'anger' based. I perceive most films as character studies, so most of my reactions have to do with observing human response, measuring whether they were authentic or not, and also wrapping my head around how I'd behave in such a situation, or if there is a way out, or a way to avoid this type of pitfall.

But to sit there gripped with fear or anger? This has never happened to me. The only film that short-circuted my ability to analyze (and to make me feel physically ill), was 'Salo: the 120 Days of Sodom.'

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I have to agree with you; I didn't feel much either.

I know the film is supposed to be a true story, but the film is a work of fiction - "the characters and incidents portrayed and the names herein are fictitious..." I find it hard to be scared by fiction, unless it's done well. Then again it could just be that I analyse the films I watch (I'm a male student studying film), and I found the film pretty average.

There are only two films that I can think of that have really had any impact on me:
The first is David Fincher's 'Zodiac'. I was fourteen when I watched it and because it was chronicling the eponymous real-life serial killer who was never caught, I was genuinely scared of the fact that he could potentially still be alive.
The second is Lars von Trier's 'Antichrist' which made me feel physically sick, but that made me realise how well made the film actually was - considering no other film has made me feel the same.
(But the films only made me feel this way on first watch) I recommend them both, especially Antichrist if anyone's interested in more experimental, arthouse cinema.

To Nova: is 'Salo' a good film? I don't want to know much about it, just whether or not it's worth buying. I'm really interested in seeing it.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Hmm, based on your physical reaction, I might have to look into 'Antichrist.'

Regarding 'Salo,' one's interpretation of 'good' is highly subjective. I own the film, and went out of my way to find and purchase it. I do this only with films that I perceive as 'good' in one way or another. It's certainly not a 'feel good' film, however, it's something I need to watch once every few years or so. Don't know why, but it's similar to a reset button that gets pressed whenever I'm confronted with such matter.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Oh, I completely understand - if the DVD cover art and influence from the Marquis de Sade's book are anything to go by.
You pretty much gave me the answer I was hoping for. Thanks.

I urge you do look into 'Antichrist' - it's a personal favourite. Ignore the Daily Mail-like controversy; 'Antichrist' is a work of art. It's as beautifully poetic as it is brutally uncomfortable - e.g. the opening sequence.
Also look into 'Valhalla Rising' (not as controversial but received a few tuts and sighs in my screening.) I found it similarly exhausting - just don't trust any trailers or poster art, because they're almost entirely misrepresentative.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

^^^Thank you for the recommendations. I will look into both of these. I've been hankering for my yearly dose of films that cause my soul to squirm, and then to re-steady itself. I haven't experienced this in a while, so I'm long overdue.

Hm, how about Eden Lake, Martyrs and Irreversible? Seen any of those?

Yes, I've seen both Eden Lake and Irreversible. Same as I mentioned earlier--my mind immediately jumps to learning mode--how to avoid, and what would I do? Then turning that over a thousand times, looking for flaws in my reasoning.

I do the exact same thing! I actually started watching horror films(at 14) to overcome my fears and become braver. lol I get upset sometimes though and agonized with films as intense as Wolf Creek or Eden Lake or Funny Games. And always think about it for hours or days trying to find any plot holes. But that's when I know it's a good movie! I want to suggest a couple of films as well, they are both French and might not be perfect but they are really good compared to the standard Hollywood Horror films at least imo.

So...you're studying film, and only two films have actually elicited an emotional response from you. That's sad bro

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Sorry, I meant in the sense of feeling "scared or angry." Of course I've felt happy or sad after watching some films; Schindler's List, Lost in Translation, Full Metal Jacket, Blue Valentine, to name a few.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Dunno bout you but I've felt the full spectrum of emotion of which I'm capable (albeit in a fleeting and softened manner) in the past 6 months just from watching movies. Maybe you're not watching enough good movies, or maybe you're trying to hard to analyse and be the critic. Rely on intuition man! Film is an emotional experience, you treat it intellectually and you suck the life out of it

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I agree with everything you've said. I know films are an emotional experience; in fact, I try not to know much about films before I watch them, so I feel the way the creators intend me to feel. Honestly, don't let my first comment put you off; I was speaking in response to horror films (and I mean entertainment horrors like Sorority Row, The Final Destination series, Friday the 13th (2009), etc.) Maybe I wasn't specific enough, but don't think of me as the way you've just described.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I just watched this tonight for the first time since i got it when it came out on DVD and i have to say the film is technically well made. the acting is good. there is some genuine suspense but some of the choices of the characters take me out of it. the scene where she shoots him and then just hits him in the back with the rifle twice has always bothered me and still does. the craziness of him just choosing which car she would happen to pick to sit in is another one that bugs me too. the scare from the scene is effective but it makes little sense. the script needed some work but it is well made. i even appreciated the slow build up that most people seemed to hate

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

i was more angry with the writing than the actual story.

mick is shot in the neck and hit by a truck yet shows very little damage has been done to him through out the film . then he magically can teleport into a randomly selected vehical and not be seen when the door is opened and the light cuts on.

once those events transpired the movie lost my interest i didn't care who lived at that point because from then on it was glorifying the killer .

That pissed me off too, I wasn't scared, though it was rally graphic & felt very real throughout. I was moreso angry because essentially Mick gets away with his crimes and the police get the wrong man. Awesome sig, btw, I loved Resident Evil and I thought Albert Wesker was a great character too.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I just felt really angry that this sick person got away with it - even though this is fiction. In real life the back-pack murderer was caught. I just got into this movie so much, I just ended up wanting to kill him. The worst part was when he turned Liz into "a head on a stick" (severed her spine). That was the only part in the whole movie when I got a little sqeamish.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

dude i totally agree with you. I got a bit angry whilst watching this (and im more a relaxed person) , thinking stuff like 'Tie the bad guy up' or 'just smash him round the head with the rifle'

My Dad used to say 'fight fire with fire' which is why he got thrown out of the the fire brigade

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

made me really uneasy and confused really as to how human beings can be that way . i find it hard to get my head around the fact that this sort of thing happens .

but having said that fter all said and done it is just a movie created for nothing more than "entertainment" purposes

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Usually most horror films don't affect me, I love the genre so I guess I've become immune to it, but certain films like this and The Last House on the Left I do find terrifying. This is one of the few films that actually had me scared, I almost found it hard to watch during a few parts.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Scared, saddened, disturbed and depressed. Wolf Creek is a disturbing and very realistic and dark film and the villain is one of the most terrifying ever seen on screen, it`s the modern day TTCM.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Angry
for the same reasons
and cos there was to much shouting from what i remember

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Angry, I wanted to get that guy and make him my own little medical experiment.
He was just not human like the rest of us. I think what makes me so angry with this one is that it's not Freddy Kruger, or some creature, but an average man with an anything but average hobby.

Killers like him exist in real life. He is no fantasy from the mind of a writer, he is the serial killer next door. I've read alot about serial killers and this guy could be anyone of them. All did unthinkable acts of violence.

This film is based Ivan Milet, a very real killer who killed between 7 and as many as 37 people. Each was shot of stabbed multiple times and is was thought he spent considerable time with each victim prior to kill. What did he do these these people prior to causing their death? Autopsy results of two of his female victims did show stab wounds in the back with the spinal cord being completely cut through, rendering each paralysed from the stab wound down.

Dahmer experimented with making a "living" slave. There in body but not mind, a willing sexual partner available any time.

These guys do the unthinkable, extreme acts ot tortue, violence, and mutilation. The only think you can do with these people is protect the average person and put them down.

I really wanted to do just that, especially after "head on a stick." The real Ivan Milet is in prison for life but some how that is just not good enough. Death should be the only option for men like him.

"I really wanted to do just that, especially after "head on a stick." The real Ivan Milet is in prison for life but some how that is just not good enough. Death should be the only option for men like him. "

I agree that prison isn't really enough, but I don't think just killing them matches the crime either. I wonder is it really possible for them to be punished in a way that actually matches what they have done. How does a person so hardened and twisted that they want to do these things experience the same amount of suffering as a normal person with their spinal cord cut so he can have complete control? Justice says let the punishment match the crime, but I'm not sure it's possible in these extreme cases. And in prison, I suspect the chance is still there for them to carry on their twisted desires. Death removes their burden on society and will satisfy some, but I think justice demands more than that.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I think your observation about "putting down" these killers is on the money. However, we spend a fortune keeping them in jail so as the keep up the pretence of being a civilised society with proper justice administered. Why we value the human rights of these people/killers who deserve no consideration and have no respect for anybody else’s human rights is beyond me?

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I am a guy. The only anger I felt was that I paid to watch this movie. haha. I'm not going to bash it, just feel like i wasted money on it.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

Angry. The movie wasn't scary at all. It was just sick *beep*

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

i feel cheated cause at the start they say its based on true events but the events are no way accurate as we see them. The one guy survived but he was not around to see all that torture and murder.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I'm male, and I must say that they do make me angry sometimes. For example, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was one of those movies. During the film, I really, truly wanted the whole sicko family to die, especially R. Lee Ermey's character, and I got huge satisfaction just seeing him get beat.

However, Wolf Creek didn't do this to me. I don't know why, maybe I was just so into John Jarratt's great performance as the bad guy that I somehow found him rather funny and, you know, the kind of character you love to hate. But I didn't really find myself caring too much about the backpacking youngsters.

Re: Scared or angry? How do you feel when you watch movies like this?

I agree that part was stupid and must have made a lot of people angry. However I don't think you'd know what you would do in that situation. You might be so scared/traumatized you just want to get out of there as quickly as possible! Thinking that he could wake up at any second, you don't really want to stay there looking for something to finish the job.

Onto the main topic.. I felt both! Scared and angry (I'm female), probably more angry though. I tend to get more angry with horror films, thinking how could these 'people' do such things? Just take away your life like it's just a game/hobby to them.

It should really make people think though, you really have to be so careful in this world. There are so many murderers and rapists out there. I would have never put myself in that situation in the first place, being in the middle of no where with just some friends. You never know what might happen!
