The Skeleton Key : At a total loss

At a total loss

I fancy myself as somewhat intelligent, but I just saw this movie, been reading the topics here and now I am at a complete loss at what happened.

I'm really not sure who was who. I thought Luke was really Luke, like the lawyer a young guy, but apparently he wasn't? What happened to Caroline's soul? What happened to the older couple I mean I guess their souls, because their bodies were there? I guess I just don't get who everyone turned into and where everyone's souls ended up.

Could anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thanks

Re: At a total loss

Okay, the servants switched bodies with the Thorpe children, who were killed in the bodies of the servants.

In the early 60s, the real Ben and Violet moved into the house featured in the movie and the servants moved into their bodies. Their souls were transferred into the bodies of the children, who were elderly by now.

When Caroline arrives and meets "Luke," his body has already been switched with Papa Justify, who was in Ben's body. Luke is in Ben's body and the servant is in Luke's. Part of Luke's job was to one, find a replacement for Violet's body and two, ensure that Caroline would stick around so Mama Cecile, who was still in Violet's body at that point, could switch bodies with her. I'm a little unclear on what pretense they used to get Luke there--I sort of assume the body of Ben had a stroke and that was when they realized it was time to switch bodies again.

At the end of the movie, Violet/Mama Cecile switches bodies with Caroline in the attic. When the bodies of Violet and Ben are rolled out of the house, it's really the souls of Caroline and Luke inside them. The servants' souls now exist inside the bodies of Caroline and Luke. Presumably, the souls of those that are switched die with the bodies they've been switched to.

In other words, if you watch the movie again, this is a quick reference for everyone as you see them in the movie:

Martin & Grace Thorpe after the "servants" are killed in the flashback = Mama Cecile & Papa Justify
Violet = Mama Cecile
Ben = Luke
Luke = Papa Justify

After the episode in the attic:

Caroline = Mama Cecile
Luke = Papa Justify
Violet = Caroline
Ben = Luke

Hope that helps!

Re: At a total loss

The old man didn't have a stroke. The old lady and lawyer (possesed by Justify and Cecille) told people he had a stroke, while daily giving him a paralyzing medicine they referred to as his "remedies". And the old lady didn't climb the stairs, she pulled herself up with her hands, crawling up the stairs. She didn't really care what damage was done to the body at that point as she knew she was about to swap into Kate Hudson's body.

Sorry you got so upset and walked out, but it was only due to your inability to comprehend what was on the screen. Anger is a common reaction to being confronted by one's own stupidity. Stick to simpler fare, though if "The Skeleton Key" was too complex for you, I'm not sure what you should watch. Best of luck making your way in the world.

Re: At a total loss

you don's sound sorry for anything , you sound like a complete *beep* i'm sorry i didn't sit down and OVER-ANALYZE A stupid movie. that went straight to the 5$ bin at wal-mart mind you.

wow how shallow of you to openly insult me on the internet i hope you feel so good about yourself for it. you are a weak excuse for a person. here's a history lesson for you. in the forums in Greece long before you and I existed, if a person like you insulted someone for their opinion you would have been severely punished. but a person like you probably doesn't have the gumption to say something so snide to a persons face do you?

I believe Violet took the elevator up to the next floor and then crawled up the steps to the attic.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Re: At a total loss

don't watch this movie it *beep* sucks. if the old man had a stroke how could he manage to "switch" bodies

If you had watched the film, you would know the answer and know why no one else has asked this but you.

By the way, this movie was great!

Re: At a total loss

You walked out, yet somehow seen the bit with the stairs which is near the end.

Re: At a total loss

Ha! Andrew good catch. I didn't even notice that but yes, the stairs part is in the last like 5 minutes! LOL He probably couldn't even get to the doors before the credits rolled!

Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them. I don't give a *beep* how crazy they are!

Re: At a total loss

I watched this very late at night after too many beers and wine, so I was pretty confused at the end. Many thanks for your post Chrissy. Think I better watch it again :-)

Re: At a total loss

This movie is little confusing. But this is an intelligent movie.

There is nothing concrete to suggest that the African servants were the first to swap bodies. That is what the film-makers want us to believe. Two episodes of swapping shown in the movie and another is mentioned. However, I think this could be about an ancient pair of demons, taking possession of bodies and when their bodies become old, swap it with younger bodies and kill or paralyze the older ones. Simple as it is, very scary in my book. The terrifying part is not the possession of the demons, it is the soul swapping of normal people to another body usually weaker ones by circumstances.

Re: At a total loss

Put it this way, The black servants used the kids, and transferred their souls into them. When the servants where dragged outside, the people where actually burning the kids!

They chose the kids, because they where the ones that would inherent the house.

Then years later, Hudson's character is brought in, actually chosen by the lawyer who was really the original male servant (husband). Remember she found the photos of herself he had taken? He chose her for her wife to body swap with.

Remember the old lady says something about living forever? And that sacrifice isn't always what you think... sometimes its a trade. And when they are done, they have taken over the bodies of the younger ones, and the lawyer (who is actually the original servant husband) tells the roommate that her friend has inherited the house in the will.

Even simpler...

The servants of the house transferred their souls into the kids, and inherited the house. They may or may not have done that again over the years, but now they are in old bodies, and Kate Hudson's character has been chosen as the body the old lady wants to possess now. The husband has already done the body swap, he is the lawyer now. Who is on the old mans body? Who knows? In the end the old lady gets her new body she wanted, and as the lawyer, he can legally keep the house they live in, because it's been arranged that they leave the house to Kate Hudson's character, who the soul of the old lady is now in!

Re: At a total loss

I really enjoyed this movie. It had a good pace that kept me interested. A TSK2 would have been great.

Re: At a total loss

Mike

Who is in the old man's body?
The Lawyer.
Papa Justify & Lawyer switched places.

This usually happens if you both pee in a Magic Fountain while wishing you had the other guy's life.
Or if you wish really, really hard that you could "get inside" of Jamie Lee Curtis.
(Your results may vary.)

Please use the elevator, the stairs are currently stuck between floors

Re: At a total loss

officially given up on humanity.

Re: At a total loss

I wonder if the Thorpes figured out what they had done to their own kids and that is why they died in a murder-suicide.

Re: At a total loss

Interesting! I hadn't thought of that.
