The best thing an owner can do is to hire a GM who knows the game and trust him to build and run the team with the resources on hand. Just because a team has an owner doesn't mean they know anything about balancing payroll with talent.

A baseball team is a HUGE investment no matter what size market it is in.
The owner would have been more "hands on" and involved with ANYTHING to do with his baseball team rather than acting like transactions regarding the A's were some kind of distraction.
