The Prophecy : Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Bob
DeNiro. Hand's down. He plays it with more panache and it fits the movie very well. This is not to say Mortenson did a bad job, just as written it's not as interesting as DeNiro's role in Angel Heart.
Re: Bob
i have to disagree there, viggo just seemed more like the devil,he even made lion like sounds, hes also handsome which lucifer is suppose to be,and he was far more intemidating

Re: Bob
In my opinion:
Robert DeNiro was by far the most sinister portrayal of the Devil.
Viggo Mortensen was the scariest, most ethereal portrayal of the Devil.
Gabriel Byrne (my personal favorite) was the sexiest, most charasmatic portrayal of the Devil.
I haven't seen Constantine yet.
I had forgotten about Jamey Sheridan! Well spotted, sinclair670-1.
Jamey was the creepiest, maybe because he looked the most innocentlol.
Re: Bob
Re: Bob
you know I'm a Pacino fan and I have yet to see Devil's Advocate. I feel somewhat ashamed.
Re: Bob
For shame, urzas! lol Pacino plays a good devil especially the way that movie is set up. Constantine's devil was ok. I was actually more intrigued with Gabriel in that movie.

Re: Bob
Oh you have to! Especially when he chews the scenery at the end. His speech is scary as hell because it sounds so damned true.think lawyers.
Re: Bob
Ethereal? Are you sure you're using that word right?
Certainly
It doesn't have to mean only 'heavenly'. It means anything that is or appears otherworldly, spiritual.

Re: Bob
John Glover in Brimstone(the series). The devil with an odd sense of humor.

Re: Bob
I'm with King of Bob - John Glover's devil in the TV series Brimstone wins hands down. What I liked about him was he was seductive and charming but utterly ruthless. Nobody would be tempted by a scary devil - but a charming seductive one
Re: Bob
Lucifer is supposed to look young, Viggo, as cool as he was as Lucifer does not look young. How do you know what the devil is like? When I think of the devil I don't think intimidating, it's hard to con people when they're too afraid to look at or talk to you.

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Between those two I'd say Mortensen, and Gabriel Byrne in End of days should get second place.
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Viggo Mortensen gives the best portrayl of the Devil between these two.
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
I'm sorry, but as much as I liked Mortenson's devil, the best devil on screen - ever - was Rosalinda Celentano in The Passion of the Christ - hands down the creepiest and most convincing fallen angel I've ever seen on screen.
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
no way man, that passion devil was no where as good as Viggo Mortensen,Viggo was awesome with his jesus like appearance

I pretty much cant stand Viggo. But I have to admit his Satan was great..
We can talk or I can fill your mouth with your mother's feces awesome!!!

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Obviously different movies look for different styles in their devils. But I was really taken aback by Viggo's take. There's just something about his "I love you I love you more than Jesus" with blood running down his chin that strikes me as insanely creepy and desperate and dismissive all that the same time.
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
I gotta say.De Niro!He just looks more the part.Every time he showed up to bedevil Mickey Rourke he looks creepier.
Viggo was awesome also.At that time he was the best sine De Niro.He has some great lines in the Prophecy.
However. What about Peter Stormare's preformance from Constintine?I was pretty much bored through that movie until he showed up.
Pacino was great. He went over the top with it.And it worked.
Gabriel Bryne was a sauve,fast-talking satan.
Nicholson as cool as he is seems dated when I look back at the witches of eastwick.
Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Viggo was the ONLY devil that I would want to have sex with. ;)
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
i think de niro has the upper hand with his brilliantly sinister performance. but viggo is amazing as well and defintely on no. 2 with his interpretation. but one should not forget that both scripts sketched different characters for lucifer which demanded different performances.
and al pacino's devil is really crap, ubelievable that this guy once delivered outstanding performances like in the first two godfather parts.

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
I agree with you about Al Pacino's satan. He overacted and was just annoying. Normally I really like him though.
Viggo is the best satan, very scary.
I also though Jeff Goldblum was really good in that movie Mr Frost. I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be the devil in that movie

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
I second that! Definately the sexiest devil I have seen in a long time. And so charismaticI could watch that scene between him and Katherine a thousand times (with the light playing on his face so beautifully). He looked gorgeous!
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
some of the Best lines ever uttered by a "devil" character were spoken by Viggo in "The Prophecy"
" Catherine: are you an angel?
Lucifer: I was THE angel. loved first above all others"
" little Tommy Dagget, How I used to love hearing your little prayers at night. and then you JUMP into bed, afraid i was under there.AND I WAS!!!!"
"Y'see, I'm not here to help you and the little bitch because I love you or because I care for you, but because two hells is one hell too many, and I can't have that."
::as he skulks back into the Shadows:: "Leave the Light on, Thomas."

Tie.
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Viggo. He's just more of a tragic, charismatic figure. De Niro, Pacino, so over the top. Pacino, that was just an older tony manero/scarface.

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
One really can't judge Deniro's devil by his acting throughout Angel Heart. It's really the ending of the movie that cinches it for those of us who think he made the most impressive satan.
Come on folks!
Imagine if at the end of the Prophecy, Lucifer's eyes turned light red like Deniro's and he pointed at Gabriel with a taloned hand shaped like a gun and hissed
"Your war is jealousy. That makes it evil. That's MINE".
Come on people. You'd be feeling sorry for GABRIEL at that point.
Viggo was good, but he wasnt THAT good.

de niro
I Worship The Goddess Amber Tamblyn
VIGGO HANDS DOWN
He's SO EVIL " I CAN FILL YOUR MOUTH WITH YOUR DEAD MOTHER'S FECES.OR WE CAN TALK ? " Viggo had COOL DEMONS TOO like the creatures in PHANTASM,Viggo ate Gabriel's heart while saying " I LOVE YOU MORE THAN JESUS" Wtf did deniro have ? long fingernails ?
Re: VIGGO HANDS DOWN
Viggo without a doubt, all those lines were over the top. I could watch his scenes over and over and they always give me chills His exchange with walken was awesome. "Lucifer, sulking in your basement over your breakup with the boss" amazing
Re: VIGGO HANDS DOWN
I love what Satan says when he is crouched down behind Thomas, something to the extent of "Little Tommy Dagget, always afraid of me being under his bed.I WAS!". So playful and childlike, added to the fact that Viggo is a master of the less is more style of acting. He just has such an enormous amount of quiet intensity.
"Your war is arrogance. That's evil. That's mine."
"Your war is arrogance. That's evil. That's mine."
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Same level, easily two of the absolute best depictions of The Devil on film (The Passion of the Christ, The Exorcist, and End of Days being right there as well).
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
VIGGO! Damn he was hot! (No pun intended)
"I have a bad feeling about this"
Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
I have to go with Viggo. He's both understated and intense, which not everyone can pull off, and I daresay De Niro has never done anything - that I can remember - that could be called understated. I'm not knocking his acting, he's very good, it's just he and Viggo have different styles and I prefer Viggo's.
And now for something completely different

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
Viggo, without any doubt.
Oh, for what it's worth, I think Al Pacinoin "The Devil's Advocate"did a better job than Robert De Niro, which takes nothing away from De Niro's performance. For example, that scene in the cafe, De Niro is slowing cracking then slowly peeling the shell off of that boiled egg, casually sprinkles salt on it andall of this going on while he's talking with Mickey Roarke's characterthen almost savagely bites the egg.
Even though I still don't know what it means, biting that egg the way he does is definitely symbolic of something, and it still scares me each time I watch "Angel Heart".
I guess one of the ways this can be summarized is that all three of these guys gave fantastic and unforgettable performances; I'd love to see all three of them in the same movie as different interpretations of Satan!
I'm living proof that a mind is a terrible thing.

Re: Viggo Mortensen's Devil Vs Robert De Niro's Devil
On sheer scariness:
Viggo was creepy and intimidating, plus he brought weird snarly companions with him.
Deniro's satan was dapper and he brought a lawyer.
These were vastly different movies though. Satan in The Prophecy wasn't trying to blend in and fool people, like Louis Cypher.
