Classic Film : I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Feb 20th. So, isn't it a little early to say our goodbyes?

Or are people just leaving early?

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Hi rc,I think people are saying their goodbyes just in case IMDb "speed things up" a bit with the shut down.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Besides, maybe the admins will change their minds. Closing accounts now is a bit of a rash move.

I also worry that they may shut down early. If they get a deluge of "please don't close the boards" it might actually prompt them to get rid of them earlier to avoid more pleas - and hate mail. Get on with what the real purpose is which is to buy Mr. Bezos his 37th house and 54548th car.

Hi Ale,just want to say that I've always found your reviews/comments on Iranian cinema absolutely fascinating, with you highlighting works that would otherwise be lost in time.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Hey thanks. We only have a certain amount of congruency between our tastes, but I always loved reading your lists and the few discussions of the weird and exploitation end of things that have been a priority to you and are increasingly interesting to me. Were you a part of the great Mandingo discussion with melvelit? (and where is he at the moment?) It's stuff like that, stuff that engages my less-developed sympathies and got me going in different directions, that was most valuable to me. And it's something that will be lost to some extent on almost any smaller forum just for lack of as wide a variety of voices.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

I agree with you, ocean, I'm staying to the bitter end. But it's good to start making alternate arrangements or final farewells. And you never know what may happen in the intervening two-plus weeks.

If I understand the admins correctly, the last day for posting is actually Sunday, February 19. The 20th is the day it all goes down the memory hole.

I wonder what X Hour is -- midnight EST, or IMDb's traditional end-of-day, midnight PST (3 AM EST)?

I bet 00:00 a.m. PST/Uniform Time Zone. Forget Washington, D.C. and EST/Romeo Time Zone, the IMDb people are Seattlists. An acquaintance of mine worked in The Seattle Times and he was very Seattlist.

Hobnob, my friend, I guess the only bright spot in all of this is that you won't be able to jinx it, the next time you mention an older celebrity, and all of a sudden, he or she passes away. You had this certain power and you simply abused it!

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

You rock it, dude. Don't let anyone ever tell you any different.

"Sparky [as he calls Schulz] taught me a lot. When I got syndicated, he said two words: “Get control” – over the character, the programme, everything. He sat down with me and spent so much time just showing me his pen and how he would draw grass indications and the like. Once, when I was trying to draw Garfield standing up, Sparky was working in the next room on a Peanuts special and he walked by and asked how I was doing. I said: “Pretty good but I can't get Garfield to stand up.” He said: “Let's see your drawing: ahh, there's your problem – he's got these little cat feet, a fat cat can't stand on little cat feet, he needs big people feet.” So he drew Garfield with big feet and it looked great. I said to myself: “Charles Schulz is touching my drawing, that's like Leonardo da Vinci dropping by.”

- Jim Davis, The Telegraph

"Here's a guy who watched Citizen Kane 40 times. That's fascinating in its own way. You don't expect it. You wouldn't expect it of the guy who drew Peanuts, and so it gets you started thinking."

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Just read the news, very sad to hear about it. With all the occasional headaches with trolls and such, the message boards, and CFB in particular, are a lot of fun, and provide invaluable information-- and friendship-- for all us classic movie fans. Whenever I go online, the CFB, along with the news, Facebook, YouTube, and a few other sites, is something I always look forward to viewing. Whatever the corporate reasons are for this, it is still very disappointing.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Staying till closing time is never such a good idea (unless you were arriving late, too).

I would like to thank Everyone here for a fun ride, and if I could start again a million miles away... No, that's not the song. You've all been great.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

People could be leaving on vacation, or will get busy with school or work, or have a death in the family and have to leave. All kinds of things going on in people's lives. Perhaps people are afraid some will leave sooner, or IMDb will close the boards sooner? At least they are seizing the moment.

And we should PM Dizexpat, jimcat, GiaJake, to let them know. Edit: Okay, I've done that. It would be quite a rude awakening to try to log on when they were already long gone.

I'll be busy saving favorite threads from mystery movies boards that I never read, so the big reveal wasn't spoiled, in the mean time, as much as I can. After all, it's now or never to get a chance to read those boards I've been saving.

But I'll be here to the end.

Yeah, I'm going down with the ship. I have been sailing on it for 17 years - with one and only one user name the whole time. When I registered and the "User name" field needed to be filled out, I couldn't think of anything clever; I hadn't prepared ahead of time, so I just went with the prosaic Given Name + Family Name initial. The database added the "6". I never saw anything of the first 5 MikeFs.

The earliest review of mine that I can find posted on the CFB weekly thread was in August 2001. DFC-2 was the thread leader at the time.

I don't sit at my computer all day and don't play video games. I have plenty of life away from the Internet, but, having said that, the IMDb Message Boards have played a bigger part in my life than any other Internet activity. I may have to go through the stages of grieving to get over it. I think the grieving stages have already started for a lot of people who seem to be in the first or second phases: Disbelief and Denial. "Maybe it won't happen. We can still stop it happening."

I'll see you all on the Big Message Board In The Sky.

That came up so many times on I Need To Know when the Boards first opened. A couple of other FAQs at the beginning that I answered several times were:

What is the amnesia movie that starts in a NYC office building during a blackout?
Mirage (1965) / Edward Dmytryk. Gregory Peck stars.

What is the movie with the little girl who doesn't like to have her food touching on the plate? At a restaurant, they bring her two slices of bread and peanut butter, all separate.
Wives and Lovers (1963) / John Rich. With Van Johnson and Janet Leigh.

Re: [Re:I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing ti

Does anyone know the name of a French film with a man who looses his wife? And then he stays in bed, with pulleys so he can get sausages, cheese and bread? His dog has a little basket with money and goes to town to get the groceries? And then he marries again and the wife has a walky talky and keeps him busy from then on out?

I saw it on PBS in the 1970s and would like to revisit it.

Re: [Re:I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing ti

That looks like a lovely film but the one I was thinking of was much older. I think it was black and white.

Thank you for your consideration. It is appreciated.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Staying to the very end, God willing.

I am going to miss our back and forth banters, interesting topics regarding classic and films in general, and the sharing of information. Honestly, it is on these boards where I sometimes hear first of a movie finally coming out on DVD or blu-ray or even the death of a certain celebrity, not at all covered by other media outlets. The obituary thread was a place where we could actually share our condolences.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Staying til last call. I don't give a bloody rip about the trolls, or political differences, or any of that tripe--you hang around all these lugs because it's the place you want to be--gripes, bitching, differences and all, it's still a place with heart, and who wants to leave until they turn out the lights?

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Definitely staying to the last day, maybe to the last minute. I wonder how that'll be, if everything just sucks away to a tiny hole in the middle of the screen, like with the old cathode ray TVs.

Put it on a tripod!

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

It's not the same anymore, though. There was no end in sight, we had the whole info-verse around us, we were e-immortal. Now our days are literally numbered, and the info-verse has shrunk to a crumbling cave, bits and pieces of ceiling falling from above, a whole mountain ready to squish us in. I guess it's time to pick our way to go. You're the party-into-oblivion kind, I'm probably the type who drives a car into a wall at max speed. Not that I couldn't find the time for one beer, tho.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Is she really, though? I mean, Lain is the collective unconscious, which will be around for at least as long as people will be around, whereas I never really thought of Scarlett Johansson as E-immortal.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

The net is vast and infinite, man. And that's where she'll be dwelling until the end of information, with or without humans.
(and let's not talk about Scarlett - I'm holding my breath here that her Motoko won't be as dull as her Lucy)

there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above her shoulder

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

I'm sure I saw something with the concept of the internet outliving human existence, but I see so much, I don't remember what it was. Sadly, this is probably one of the more hopeful future prospects for human kind.

Lucy was awesome, MAN! That character (just like Motoko or her 'Under the Skin' character) actually are meant to be pretty bland and the films overall work best that way, I think. Anyhow, screw that American remake, I doubt that I will ever bother seeing it even if it turns out to be decent, so far it certainly looks like nothing but a live-action copy of the original with no real artistic raison d'être (or maybe you prefer the word Daseinsberechtigung), and personally I have no use for that.

- just another film blog -
http://perception-de-ambiguity.tumblr.com

Meiner Meinung nach hat das Dasein sowieso keine Berechtigung, aber naja

(Prüfung wurde bestanden, aber zu spät - ich kann schon wieder auf Deutsch denken)

Well I kinda understood that Lucy was meant to be totally aloof, but bland Scarlett was bland, and I don't even dislike her. I still have to see Under the Skin (as in I have it heruntergeladet, so it's on top of my otherwise ginormous "to see" list). And, although I am sure she won't be able to portray the unbreakable-yet-so-vulnerable character of my favorite cyborg, I'm positive I won't be able to refrain from watching her Ghost in the Shell, even if I tried. It's Motoko, man. Actually the trailer looked reasonable, closer to Oshii's (and my) Motoko than Kamiyama's, or even Shirow's Motokos.

I'll stay as long as I can, and right now, due to some impending commitments I can't wriggle out of and which may happen around the time the boards close, I'm actually worried that I'll miss the end.

If I can do it, I'll be here till the last call.

Re: I don't know about anyone else - but I'm staying till closing time

Don't worry, telegonus. I'm already starting to notice more and more glitches with the boards, probably because a lot of folks are logging in/posting for the final couple of weeks. My guess is that, just before Feb 20th, the boards will crash.

Or, in an opera house, miss the end of Richard Wagner's Götterdämmerung
