so lazy of IMDB! Trolls can be banned. Posts can be deleted. I have three people on my ignore list.
We are grownups, but apparently IMDB thinks they need to protect us!
I wonder if this has more to do with all the posts for sites that show illegal downloads. Maybe that's the real reason: Pressure from the movie industry, and IMDB doesn't want to admit it.
I would always report a post that was promoting a site for illegal downloads.
Edit: apparently IMDB thinks we are all masochists and only read message board to suffer abuse, so it's not a positive experience. That and all the poor souls who are forced to read the posts on the boards!

The message boards here have been around for almost 20 years. They think that they are possibly outdated? Are message board obsolete just because of social media? It reeks of communism to me !

Well, the full announcement says their facebook page gets a lot more traffic. So maybe they're trying to push everyone over to facebook for a bigger cut of the advertising $.

I agree. It is laziness to shut down the boards altogether rather than invest time in actually banning trolls. It's not hard to ban an IP address and stop at least some people from creating multiple sock accounts. You can also delete accounts as a web master. I think they will quickly realize just how much of their site traffic comes from message board users. They say its just a "small percentage," but I doubt that. How many people come here just to get movie information and then move on? Those folks may come here once in a blue moon, but not everyday like board users.

A lot of people use just their phones etc for internet now, and imdb doesn't seem to be set up well for that. Maybe they decided to give up rather than try to make all of this stuff work for phones, and they'll only bother with updating the actual show/movie information pages. All those need is scrolling etc, nothing to do with inputting, updating, etc.

But if people aren't clicking ads etc to generate revenue, what difference does it make what parts of the site they visit? Especially if what they're doing creates a demand for paid labor but doesn't produce revenue to pay for it?

I HIGHLY doubt the decision had anything to do with trolls. If anything it's a push for people to use their social media accounts instead, something beneficial to advertisers .

There was too much negativity on a lot of these boards.
But why would "negativity" get boards shut down?
Additionally, a lot of posters seem to feel they are being insulted and "picked on," or even trolled, if someone disagrees with them, instead of just seeing it as an alternative viewpoint. I know I have been guilty of that when I'm feeling annoyed with the world.
