Red Road : Sad, sad,sad scene….
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
I totally agree, it's a scene that has been etched in my mind probably forever.

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
I've seen hundreds of films with my wife (we've been together 16 years) and during that scene was the only time I ever saw her cry uncontrollably during a film. We never lost a child, but we have a girl who is about 20 months old. Maybe for any parent, this wordless, silent scene hits unexpectedly hard The fact that it comes halfway through the film seems only to amplify its impact. YR
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
i completely agree. i burst into tears then too. i don't think i will ever forget it.
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
Really good scene. I saw a documentary a few years ago about a woman who had lost her two grandsons. She kept their room as it had been and had made two dummies wearing their clothes and had made masks of their faces to put on them. Even though I felt sorry for her, it did just look freakish and weird.
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
Gut wrenching scene.
Kind of justification for her actions which seemed to spiral out of control as the film progressed.

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
unbearably sad. that scene made me want to go get my son out of bed and just cuddle him. just the thought of losing a child is impossible to wrap your brain around. can't imagine how hard it must be to go on after that.
"Hey, how come Andrew gets to get up? If he gets upwe'll all get upIT'LL BE ANARCHY!!"

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
An unbelievably sad scene. I was in tears by the time it was over, and crying the rest of the film as I thought back to that one scene. So incredibly heart-wrenching. The best scene in a great film.
The sea was angry that day, my friends. Like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
When I first saw this I couldn't understand what she was doing, then as it dawns on you that she's wanting to cuddle her daughter whichever way she can it's so devastating. Amazing scene.

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
That scene was very sad, but I didn't actually start crying until the penultimate scene where she visits her husband's parents and finally opens up to them. I openly cried there, as opposed to just tearing up a bit like I normally would in a sad-film. I've enjoyed performances by Kate Dickie in the past but she floored me with this film. I just wanted to be able to comfort her character somehow and then I had to remind myself I was just watching a film!

Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
Exactly that! I guess I might have been softened up by the clothes scene, but it was the photo of the dad and daughter at Loch Lomond, and the look on the in-laws faces that finished me off - in fact everyone handled that scene superbly. Really heart-breaking stuff - not just the tragedy of the loss, but the catharsis of the decision to let go, and 'reconciliation' with the parents. Wish I'd seen this in the cinema
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
Definitely. All three of the actors in that scene were great. I really enjoyed this film (as much as you can enjoy something so tragic).
I actually had it in my head that I was supposed to dislike the father-in-law at the film's start because of the way he and Jackie behaved around one another. We only had a limited perspective on him from her point of view and the way things were telegraphed I assumed he had done something awful to her in the past. By the end of the film my heart was basically breaking for everyone in the story, except for maybe Clyde, Stevie and Stevie's dad. I didn't absolutely hate them though.
I would have liked to have caught this one in a theater as well. I believe I've seen all of Arnold's work up to this point, but the only thing I was lucky enough to catch in the theater was Wuthering Heights. It was a nearly full showing but the audience was dead silent throughout the whole thing. The atmospherics and performances of the film really resonated with me thanks to the big screen and well-behaved audience.

Agreed. That scene was heartbreaking.
Re: Sad, sad,sad scene….
Your reply just made me think back on the film and that particular scene again and I got all teary-eyed. I'm such a softie!
Just thinking of Kate Dickie's voice breaking as she says, "I'm sorry", along with the mother-in-law's attempt at comforting her and the loving/pitying look on the father-in-law's face makes me wanna cry. Such a powerful film. I saw it only once nearly a year ago but it still stands out so vividly in my mind.
It's scenes like these in film that make me wanna be around other people and do my best to make them happy (even though I think I hate people sometimes, haha!).
