Perfect Strangers : When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I have searched far and wide, and no one can give me any information. Please help if you know anything about a release. Even if I can buy it from another country I loved this program and my VHS tape is slowly dying from playing too often.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I see that it is (apparently) available from www.moviemail-online.co.uk on DVD. I can't find any mention of it in North America. It was shown recently on BBC Canada - a wonderful movie, indeed.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I've seen it while living in the UK and enjoyed it immensely. I would buy a Region 1 copy. Sometimes, Acorn Media is successful in releasing Region 1 version of BBC titles that BBC are otherwise uninterested in doing so themselves. At the very least an expression of interest from Acorn might goad BBC into action.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

It won't be. The only way you can see it is to buy a region free DVD plsyer. I bought a Pioneer DV-588A online from the World Gift Center. Then I bought the DVD from Amazon.com UK. The DVD player was about $178. The BBC has no plans to sell it for the American region. The region free player is great because there are a lot of BBC titles not available here.
If you have the money, go for it.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I'm holding out hope that Matthew MacFadyen's incredibly powerful performance in "Pride & Prejudice" will make the American DVD more interesting to the DVD producers. There is an alternative, though. There are DVD players on the market that will play both American and European formats and they aren't terribly expensive (<$150). That might be the answer. I'm seriously considering it because my favorite (favourite?) British films and TV series aren't being converted quickly enough!

Good luck!

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I'm in the US.

I purchased a region free Pioneer dvd player for $102 on eBay (the box says it was modified). Since seeing P&P 2005, I've been buying Matthew's movies at AmazonUK.

Region 2 DVDs play on my laptop without any problems.

BTWthe same movies seem to be less expensive at AmazonUk than at AmazonUS.

I'm watching Perfect Strangers right now.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I know this sounds dumb, but even if I ordered MM movies from amazon.uk, I would not be able to play them on my DVD player???. I live in the US. I had no idea about region DVD players. Can someone explain this to me??? I thought a DVD player could play any DVD. I am glad I have not ordered any movies. It was my understand that In My Father's Den was going to released in the US this summer. Does anyone know if that is true? I would love to see it and Perfect Strangers or anything he is in including Spooks, which I have considered ordering.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

You will notice on some DVD sale pages it says "region #" somewhere on the page. You should be able to find information about this on Amazon.com.
Basically, different parts of the world get different DVD releases. North America is Region 1, Europe and Japan are region 2, Australia is 4, China is 6, and some other countries and areas share these regions.

http://hometheater.about.com/cs/dvdlaserdisc/a/aaregioncodesa.htm
explains it in more detail.

If you have a DVD-ROM drive on your computer you can switch regions, but each computer allows the region-swapping a set number of times, so while it's a good idea if you take your computer to a different continent for a year and rent a lot of movies there, it's not a good idea if you watch movies from two different regions a lot (IE, you don't want to do frequent region switching, so it really isn't practical to do it just for a single DVD, unless you plan to do something like have a laptop computer that ONLY plays dvds from a region not your own).

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I am in western Canada (Vancouver) and I have two DVDs in my hand that I rented today. Clearly it is available here, now at least. They are labelled "Almost Strangers".

Re: September 5 2006

According to the digital bits, http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents, Warner, on behalf of BBC, is releasing this title (and Shooting the Past) on Sept 5 in Region 1.

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

I also bought a Cyberhome DVD player and it was easily hacked to play other region DVDs. I just got Perfect Strangers in the mail from Amazon UK yesterday, and wow, it's great! Stayed up until 2 a.m. watching it, finally had to go to bed with one more episode to go. Will watch that one today.

I have to agree with another poster about how reasonable the prices are on Amazon UK. I recently ordered the 10th anniversary edition of the BBC Pride and Prejudice from Amazon UK, and with postage to the US, the cost was less than $17! Amazing!

Re: When will it be out on DVD in America? Help!

The film is known as "Almost Strangers" in North America and will be available in region one format in September 2006.
