Red Eye w/Tom Shillue : The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

How quickly this show deteriorated without him.

It shows now how fundamental he was to the comedy of the show, both as a writer and a panel member, as it now entirely sucks.

And I say this after not even realizing he was permanently gone until several weeks after the fact. It didn't click in my head why it was progressively getting worse and now... now it does.

Gutfeld left to his own devices I think gravitates toward the weirder, less funny stories. Andy too quickly goes off on tangents and has never been good at the table, where he was perfect in the Halftime Report role. Without that, the format has taken a nosedive, and the humor of the show seems to directly correlate with whatever appeals to those two and their ranting capabilities and/or their more specific, dopey interests.

Bill had more of a sense of what's actually funny and therefore funny to the audience. With humor as the primary importance, but when it came to the topics he also usually did make the best points in his terrifically wacky way. His commentary is much needed and missed. It was fun while it lasted.. they all made a great team but now the key puzzle piece is missing.

And my final complaint is that somehow, the guests on rotation lately that I always have happened to like the least seem to show up on the program every night now. They lost a lot of the more substantial guests.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I, too, miss the "repulsive sidekick."

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Something is clearly missing without Bill. He did a lot for the show; interviews, self-deprecation,punching bag, point of view etc... I like Gutfeld, yet I think two shows a day takes its toll on him. Andy, Greg, and Bill were a great trio.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I stopped watching completely after Bill left. Bill was truly the heart of the show

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Yes indeed.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I used to be a regular viewer of this show (used it kind of like a podcast when sitting at my computer doing other things).

Even re-watching some of the final episodes with Bill are more vibrant and enjoyable than what the show has now become. Joanne Nosuchinsky is now a full-time panelist. No offense to her, but she's completely out of her depth. She has none of the wit of the regular rotation. She doesn't respond to any of the more obscure cultural or media references that Andy, Greg (or any other panelist makes). You can get away with that kind of thing when you're a guest (especially if you're a new guest).

Sure she's attractive, but so are a *ton* of the guest that are on the show, and they're usually there because they're some kind of accomplished writer, comedian, politico. The credentials she has would normally get her on a VH1 retrospective entertainment show at best.

Bill could be annoying or contrarian, but he was usually funny, even if in the end they turned the tables and made fun of him.

On a side note, Andy has been looking miserable for the better part of 6 months. I imagine it was at his request to be part of the show's regular panel, but the ombudsman aspect with the funny fake news report, half-time and end-game usually ate up at least a third of the run time and was often the highlight of the program.

I'm sure none of the people involved with the program would agree, but the golden age of this show ended last Fall. Even the shaky "first season" with the silly looking brick set was better than what the show has become.

"No, not the mind probe!"

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I haven't seen the show lately but I do remember Joanne being there an awful lot and having little to contribute apart from her looks. Still, huh? That's pretty bad that she is still a constant guest.

She doesn't fit in that well, not funny in the least, though maybe she doesn't argue back or offer too strong of opinions that they like having her around. Sometimes the female guests have been a pain if they're too opinionated or snarky, but better to have some smarts and wit than none at all.

The last show I watched I could physically feel Greg and Andy seeming exhausted and getting impatient, mainly Greg but both. I think they're tired of it and don't really care anymore. If they did, wouldn't there be more of an effort to find new guests or recruit back the old ones? More an effort to bring back the charm the writing and segments had before?

No Bill, no show. No coincidence that the seemingly continued decline of this show that followed his departure.

Not only is she a constant guest, she's permanent now.

BTW, I agree about her not fitting in that well. If there had to be a permanent guest to take Bill's spot, I would've gone with Sherrod Small. At least he's funny.

If you haven't watched Red Eye lately you may not even recognize it anymore. It's basically a raunchier version of The Five now. They fired Bill Schulz and replaced him with a former Miss New York who's about as bright as a burned out CFL.

Re: Tonight Show moving to NYC….

Such a shame.

Re: Tonight Show moving to NYC….

Joanne adds nothing as a panelist. If they were intent on replacing Bill with a woman, Jedediah would have been more suitable. Red Eye is hardly worth watching now unless Mike Baker or Sherrod are on.

Re: Tonight Show moving to NYC….

It's like they hired Joanne because they were just too lazy having to fill the "leg chair" every day. I hate to say it, but it does seem like Greg is starting to phone it in. I don't see him staying on much longer. My guess is he'll turn it over to Andy or maybe Tom, and then it will go under.

Re: Tonight Show moving to NYC….

The last one I attempted to watch, Sherrod was hosting and he flubbed his way through every line and therefore ruined the puns and punchlines. Disappointing, and yes, you said it right. Joanne just doesn't add anything. Anyone I can think of that would be better obviously has things to do and can't commit to continuing to sink this ship 5 days a week as she can.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

AGREED.

I miss his "Man On The Street" segments.

The entire tone of the show has changed.

I'm on the border of not DVR-ing it anymore, as I find myself fast-forwarding more and more, and just ignoring the show as it plays in the backround.

It was fun while it lasted

I'm finding this to me my mantra, now.

It's just not the same.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I quit DVRing at the end of last year. :(

Just watched last night because PJ O'Rourke was on, so I thought I'd give it a try again and no improvement.

I had no idea they have a permanent female on. Must be hard to book 3 people a night so I get it, but she's definitely no Bill.

I like Andy as a human I guess, but he was so much better in the ombudsmen role. His east-coast snobbiness about pop culture always has pissed me off so I hate seeing him the whole show. Little bits are ok.

And by snobbiness I mean he's one of those people who think that if they dislike something everyone should and you're an idiot if you don't. If he likes something, everyone should and you're an idiot if you don't. I know he's masking an inferiority complex by acting superior, but still it's annoying.

I didn't necessarily agree with Bill's political opinions all the time, but he brought the funny. And I loved those man on the street things or when he went to bizarre locations for interviews. Sigh.

I also miss Pinch. The death of Pinch was the first warning sign I guess. It's been a steady decline ever since. I even hate the new-ish set. I preferred mini-Greg standing while everyone sat.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I think that was the first crack...

Pinch was great... I even liked Porch, the intern.

The show originally had a "*beep* it! It's 3am.. nobody's watching." vibe... Now, it just seems more like The Five: part 2.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I miss those segments too, they were hilarious. I miss his wacky facial expressions. I miss Greg insulting him and him firing back with some ridiculous response that no matter how dopey or rehearsed it sounded, it made me laugh. I miss his arguments with the others that lasted about 5 seconds that always ended in everyone at the table laughing.

It's just not as funny anymore. Which is sad.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Common, Joanne isn't THAT bad.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Is that you, Joanne? Anyhoo, I'll cede to that... with the added point that that doesn't mean she's good either.

An inconsequential element to the panel.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Joanne in no way compares to all of the great female panelists the show had in the past. All she does is add a female perspective to some topics. Often she has little or nothing to say.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

And in no way even remotely as funny as BILL SCHULZ. So she is a poor, poor successor.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

I only miss Bill some of the time and Joanne keeps improving. Lauren Sivan would've been a much better replacement than Jedidiah Bila. Jediah is smart and lovely but really not that funny. The Five has contributed to the show's decline and you can tell Greg focuses most of his energy there. The show needs to stop focusing entirely on the whacky news stories and go back to covering some serious news stories. It also needs to work on booking better guests.

Re: The official 'I miss Bill' thread.

Lauren Sivan would've been definitely the right choice. She definitely is funny.

But she has a full time job in LA I think.
