The Insider : WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
Yep, just had to agree, that scene was supreme.
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
I love that scene on two levels:
- Bruce McGill's electrifying performance. It proves the maxim of "there are no small parts, only small actors." He has maybe ten minutes of screentime in the whole film and owns every second.
- I'm a court transcriptionist and so I deal with obnoxious attorneys every day. I've seen several depositions where someone tries what Wings Hauser pulls in this scene, eg. ramming an objection down their opposition's throat. So in that sense it was great to see a lawyer get burned for a cheap stunt like that.

Couldn't agree more Eddie. I imagine it has the same effect on many viewers - almost as if we are being reminded to take things seriously as well
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
Bruce McGill is one underrated actor

Quoting the real Ron Motley, recalling that deposition (see http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/settlement/interviews/mo tley.html ):
"There must have been 50 lawyers in that room. Forty-five of whom represented the tobacco industry. And then there were 4 or 5 of us representing the State of Mississippi.
So we were outnumbered, but they were outmanned."

It was a little over the top.
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
Applause worthy that scene.

A bit of wee went down my urethra, but didn't come all the way out.
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
That's the funniest thing I've read in weeks! Seriously I'm cracking up. You have just made reading threads for six hours worth while. Thank you. Now I'm going to take a nap.
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
I am watching this in 2016, u made the post in 2011 and I have the same effect after watching this scene. Wanted to check if others felt the Same waybeautiful scene and great acting.
Re: WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!
Almost five years latertotally agree with your post. Bruce McGill is absolutely one of my favorite actors. Although he's a character actor and usually gets small roles, you never forget him (loved him as Chuck in Matchstick Men). He's one of those actors that really deserves some recognition.
