We Own the Night : terrible movie. who's with me?

terrible movie. who's with me?

Am i the only one that hated this movie. hard to follow, very slow and for the most part totally unbelievable. then i see the reviews on imdb, reviews that i usually trust, and it's a 7.3 . i'm rating it a three and i'm giving it too much credit. totally disappointed, love robert duvall, love juaquin, learning to like marky mark, eva's ok. don't understand why so much talent signed off on this after reading the script.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I actually found it quite enjoyable.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

This movie was garbage. Good actors, bad movie, really bad script. Corny as can be. I mean, it was just so fake and unrealistic. If I'm watching a movie where they are trying to make it as real as possible, then that's what I want to see. If I'm watch shoot 'em up or something like that then I understand the corny stuff. Way overrated. I'm deeply disappointed. Of course this my own opinion. I respect everyone's own opinion.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I was a bit disappointed myself. I think I've about had it with the Russian drug dealers/mafia BS. I just don't see the purpose anymore. It's the same garbage every time. There's nothing interesting about the main villain he cuts off heads and he's creepy, okay I know it's not about the villain, but there's nothing special about this movie, just stale conflict.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

i agree, bad film, got reasons, but im in a lecture and supposed to be working.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

very slow. I was bored.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

It was bad. The movie kept getting worse as it went on. Joaquin Phoenix's character from from doing drugs to being the big hero, doesn't say much for the NYPD does it.

The NYPD should've sued the producers to force them to use some fictional city.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

yeah i agree. the movie dragged on. i was totally fooled by the previews. pretty much everything that i wanted to see from the previews happened way in the beginning to i was left to think, what else is there?
the climax - well was there even one? i really didn't get the closure scene at the end. it just didni't make you feel anything - no touching moments.

i think it would've been a great movie if the storyline went in a different direction. they had a great cast, and i was expecting a more riveting film.

no chemistry between the brother characters, and at the end where bobby thought he was amada sitting in the ceremony, i was like WTF? i don't know how that was supposed to add emotional value. i'm sorry i just couldn't feel it.

the only thing i can say is that the acting was good. i love joaquin still and mark still! maybe they weren't good at being producers (together!)?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

The part where Bobby thinks he sees Amada sitting in the ceremony is supposed to show how the bond between brothers or fellow cops is stronger then the bond between him and Amada. Didn't you get that when he told his brother "I love you very much" right after realizing that it wasnt Amada in the crowd?

I didn't love this movie but I didnt find it terrible. I thought it was better than %80 of crime dramas that come out (ex. Running scared). I wasn't expecting a The departed or Pulp Fiction so I wasn't let down.

The fact that they chose Blondie does not ruin the movie for me. Music played in clubs is not always contemporary top 100. In fact often times you will hear old and sometimes rare tracks played in clubs. If this is what you are getting hung up on you should seek help.

Lastly I read many of you are comparing it to Gone Baby Gone. Its been a while since I saw GBG and I do remember liking it but that movie was far from realistic. A bunch of cops risking loosing their jobs and possibly freedom to kidnap a kid and the whole idea of throwing her into a quarry to deep to search. It just seems like the plan relied too much on everything going right. There was no room for error and in reality something wouldve gone wrong.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

You're reaching. He thought he saw her because he wished she was still in his life. His face showed his disappointment and heartache when he realized it wasn't Amada.

Joseph said,"I love you very much". He replied,"I love you, too".

"a malcontent who knows how to spell"

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Cpcudd - If you'd paid attention you would have noticed that the movie was set in the 80s when Blondie's music wasn't so dated anyway. The issue with the music though is one I could identify with. One minute the music is loud, then the characters are almost whispering and mumbling. my amp didn't know whether it was up or down as I constantly tampered with the 5.1 sound settings to hear what was going on properly.

Overall an average movie.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I liked the movie. When it first came out, I thought it was going to suck because I really can't stand Mark Wahlberg. But I saw it a few weeks ago and it was pretty enjoyable.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yeah, I was extremely let down. There were a few solid scenes, but overall it just didn't work. Seeing Gone Baby Gone the night before certainly didn't help this movie score any points with me, but even if I hadn't, I believe it was not as good as the trailer made it appear. Eva was terrible - What purpose did her character serve, save for her touch myself moment. Even that was kinda ho hum. I'm gonna just stop now, and move on before I tear apart the rest of the trash they slipped in on us.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Ha what is funny is that I had watched Gone Baby Gone the night before as well, so maybe my expectations were a little high after seeing such a good film. But this movie was super unrealistic, predictable, and very unoriginal. I love Eva Mendes as a piece of eye candy but the intro scene wasn't that hot and it was a totally unnecessary part of the movie, the first twenty minutes seem mostly of them kissing and to say how in love they are. I gave it four stars, I think mostly just because of the cast in it. This is the third movie now that imdb has failed me on in the past two months.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I rented this as a blind rent, and was surprised, better then expected.

Guess i would be in the miniority. I mainly watch horror's or scifi, so maybe my taste in this genre is a bit behind, Ive seen all the classics, thats about it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I take it that you haven't seen enough good movie to know the difference.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I think that phoenix was okay. But Mark Wahlberg's character was very bad written. The movie was not good

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I agree, this movie was a piece of garbage after about 15 mins or so. I also rated it a three. With all the acting talent I expected a whole lot more out of this one, or at least a mindless actioner. However, neither was to be the case for this crappy uninspired garbage of a movie.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I actually enjoyed it. I did watch Gone Baby Gone last night and after watching this one, I told my girlfriend that this was one of the best back to back movies we had watched in a long time.

I guess you guys were just not in the mood for this type of movie.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yeah not in the mood for Garbage! I watch Gone Baby Gone after and felt way better because it was a good movie. We own the night was bad. Very bad. I'm very disappointed in Phoenix and Wahlberg.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yeah, not great at all.
It started good and slowly got worse until my husband and I were making fun of it at the end. Silly dialog, bad actingthough Joaquin gave a very good, honest performance.
It seemed like Mark Walberg either checked out during the movie, or just isnt a very good actor.
Disappointing!

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

LOL I find most every negative thing said in this thread about the movie (unrealistic, no brotherly chemistry, boring, etc.) to be completely wrong. I guess it seems few people have a good idea of what makes a movie good. This movie is deep, riveting, moving, dramatic in so many ways. It's one of the greatest films I've ever seen. I feel sorry for people who apparently have the need to see "non-boring" stuff like explosions and ridiculous gunfights (which aren't even totally void in this film!) with no emotional impact to make them happy.

Great film.

Matthew Lillard for Carnage in Spider-Man 4!

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I'm with youthis movie really was the pits..right from the opening montage (the black and white evidence photos are saying this is a true story?)

There was zero character development at allthere was arc after arc after arc with really no plot in betweenit was almost like watching a jump cut action movie that was missing all the actionThe whole takedown scene in the marsh at the end was comicalEspecially with Joaquin slow mo striding away from the circle of copsWow, he's a hardened cop nowof wait, didn't he just became a provisional cop the scene before (10 mins of movie time max)?

And the two male leads got producer's credit? Was this to keep them on board of this train wreck of a project?

Such a shame to see talent get involved with a grade F film school project

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Disappointing. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but definately disappointing.

Maybe the problem is that the preview and cast got our hopes up too high. It looked really solid.

Oh well.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Definitely not as good as I expected. On top of that, the music and costumes were wrong for 1988. Don't open a movie set in 1988 with "Heart of Glass," a song released in 1979 and with strong associations to that decade.

Y'all can go to hell. . .I'm goin' to Texas

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

You got that right. The trailer showed promise, but as soon as the movie starts, it is as if the producers, and directors just put all the good parts in the trailer, and let the movie fall into place, and that did nothing at all to save it. If the trailer was the best parts of the movie, then that tells you right there how the movie is.

There is a lot of trailers for movies done this way, and you are hyped up and excited, pay for the tickets, and walk out wanting your money back. What people call this, is false advertisement. They don't care how bad the movie is, just as long as they fool the people into paying to see it. So glad this one I actually did not get fooled to paying to see in the theater.

I am a gore watching freak!!!

If it don't have it, it isn't worth the watch.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Are you *beep* i n g blind?

"There was zero character development at all"

Yes there was. The movie centers around Bobby changing his ways, reuniting with his brother and father and renewing his life. To say the above, you must be really stupid.

And all of you in this board, you all seem like "i don't like this movie because i thought it would be an EXTREME action movie" or the other part saying "this movie is way too unrealistic" The movie balances between being an action movie and being a drama, and it does it perfectly. The car chase scene was intense, but no, there were no extremely huge explosions or 4 cars crashing into eachother at the same time. Disappointed by this fact, or what?

And finally, i think the climax (which i do believe was there), was fantastic as well. It didn't seem like "yay, bobby gets revenge and all is good". Due to the fact that both his father and brother had been shot earlier in the movie, i felt like i wasn't sure whether bobbie would survive the encounter with the russian mob boss. So that was really intense as well.

We Own The Night 9/10

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Thank you skipperaugust. Thank you bemorecynical2001.

I am a stickler for realism in movies like this, or any movie for that matter. I found nothing in "We Own The Night" unbelievable, which is why I am shocked to see all these negative comments.

To answer this "he was sworn in as a cop without going to the police academy OMG worst movie ever" argument his brother was a Lt. on the police force, and his father was Chief. I THINK that would get him some pull. Besides, he knew all the department brass since he was a child. He put his life on the line in an undercover operation, and he was closer to the Russians than anyone on the force. I think that makes it totally realistic for him to get a provisionary badge on this case. He wasn't given a gun, and he had to go to the academy right after the case was closed. Tell me, how is that unrealistic?

Besides, when have you seen a movie that was 100% realistic anyways? Are you telling me "The Departed" or "The Godfather" were 100% true to life? Don't blow smoke up my ass please.

If you didn't like it, stop recycling the same old worthless statements over and over and have some respect for those of us who enjoyed the film. I am not an idiot nor a cretin, and I loved it. Apples and oranges, but I will say that "We Own The Night" is most certainly NOT "garbage".

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

good call Bevo..why would a supposedly hip clubowner be playing Blondie in a club called El Caribe in 1988? Nobody other than new wave nostalgics was listening to all blondie in '88. that set the movie's inaccuracies on centre stage and it only got worse from there..to me this movie was not horrible, but not good either. A waste of time for phoenix, wahlberg, myself and especially robert duvall.

Totally agree acting is OK, but the story-telling is terrible

Can't believe it's got 7+ out of 10 on IMDB

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I agree. I just rented it today. It was too slow. The logic was not there. Why would they allow Bobby in on a raid if he was not legally a cop and letting him get away with murder? Come on. The bad guy had it coming, but seriously? I expected better and was disappointed.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

You can always tell a crappy movie when there is one review on the box and it is from some unknown at some Fox TV Station that had the AUDACITY to state this was better than the the Departed.Hint # 2 is NEVER listen to the high school zomie chick in the movie rental store who raves about a film without first checking out what other films she ranks as great.#3 Mark Cuban the basketball owner was involvedshould stuck to hoops. Bad script, stupid story,over-acted, a total waste of time.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Ebert gave it thumbs up so dont come on here spouting that only unknown people gave it decent reviews. Im not saying Ebert is right or wrong or anything..Im just saying he did give it thumbs up.
