Brokedown Palace : I'm Sick and Tired…
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
Don't take this as bitchy, but in case you were wondering.. We go by Americans. Which is weird since everyone calls it the US. I still call it America, because the word is prettier.
We have a lot of freedom here, actually. I mean. I certainly feel that even in a lower class family I've grown up over priveledged and had a lot of opertunities and I really can't say that I've been oppressed or that my life has even been difficult.
But you've got it a bit wrong. The US is not this giant machine where we all hate other races, etc. There are some people in the US who are racist. Life is probably more difficult for minorities, but we do have anti-discrimination laws to try to level things out. The biggest issue right now isn't even the Black issue. I think we pretty much collectively thing that racist people are stupid.. Even people who are racist pretend to think people who are racist are stupid. But homophobia is rampant and accepted, though those barriers are being slightly broken down.
And our president is.. Well. The economy, war, making a lot of other countries angry at us, blah blah, etc.
Also, we have lots of little third world countries right inside our own. Parts of Appalachia, parts of the the inner city, some very small towns. There are people in our country who are starving and children who have no health care even though it is made available to them if their parents will take them to the health department.
So, really.. You've picked the wrong thing to hate Americans for. Choose something better.
Also: it really annoys me when people decide that all Americans are arrogant and we think that everyone wants to be like us, etc. We are a major power in the world. We're brought up to believe that we can make anything happen. But mostly, I think everyone in the world is just a little bit proud of where they came from. Even though I'm not always proud of what the country does, or who's in charge, I am familliar with this place and its customs and I identify with it and feel strongly about it and I have an attatchment to that identity. I wish some of the people disagree with me didn't live here, but you know.. That's kind of the double-edged thing about America.
It's not that it's the best country. It's just that it's my country. And no matter how long I stay in yours, it never *really* will be.

Only one thing that realy bugs me, the US is not America!! America is a continent not a contry! There are many many other contries in America. And I just think it seems as some americans think it's the only contry worth mentioning in America. I am Canadian and live in Northern America!
only my two cents
Give her hell for us Peeves
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
It is the "United States of America" so it has been shortened to either the US or America.
North America is the name of the continent, not America. When people refer to America they are not referring to or including Mexico & Canada. When people say North America, they are.

"I'm Sick and Tired"
I am sick and tired of idiot people in other countries who generalize everyone in the United States based on some people's actions. If you cannot overcome the need to generalize, then just keep your mouth shut on the subject. I mean, it's no better than what you are griping about "U.S.-ians" doing. Get a clue.
"There is no other place on earth where African people were treated so badly because of being who they are"
Umm, people have been treated badly around the globe, across the centuries, in many differing countries. Why are you harping on the African Americans as though they are the only ones ever to suffer at the hands of others based on race and what-not? You truly strike me as a blowhard with very little understanding of the real world.

OK, so what's the speed of dark?

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
I'm Canadian and I agree the United States is a *beep* country. There drug laws are just as harsh as Thai drug laws (if not harsher) and not to mention their country is ran by a moron who starts wars over oil and opium poppies. In my opinion The United States is a cesspool, my family is taking a vacation there and I refuse to go. There "war on drugs" is complete crap. The goverment spends billions of dollars to create propaganda, spread lies, and put people in jail for extremely long periods of time for drugs that don't do that much harm unless one habitually abuses the narcotic.
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
Couldn't agree more with corteo!
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
is the brokedown palace message board on imdb really the forum for this
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
I think Europeans are more racist. Yes racism in US is due to its history, I'm sure if Europe had a similar history, it would be no different. Anyway, call me when any European country seriously considers a black person as head of their state.
I feel more at home as a non-white US citizen in my country then I ever felt in racist Europe. At least we have a national dialogue about our racism, whereas in Europe, where everyone is mostly white, no one even questions their own prejudices.

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
europe is a cesspool.
the US is a great country. i hate that we are being judged because some idiots voted for a moron. i never voted for him!
i'm not racist. i don't think that the US is the greatest country in the world but it's the only country i know and i think it's great. there are alot of problems here with crime and violence, illiteracy, poverty, race, etc, but so is there in europe. i don't like that the "news" doesn't have anything from other countries unless something big happens. i can't name and point out every country in the world, but i don't want to. not when other countries hate me for no reason other than being american. what's that called? oh yeah, prejudice! so when you complain about stupid americans, you are just proving how stupid you are.
drugs destroy lives and the people who came up with "the war on drugs" and the laws tried to get people to realize that drugs are awful, even if you aren't a habitual user. it only takes one time to overdose.

Uhm, when exactly did this issue become about Europe? And you complain about other countries hating you because you're American, but you yourself apparently feel it's all right to call an entire continent a "cesspool". Maybe that's the kind of thing the OP's talking about?
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
Well, I certainly hope you stay in the US, since you're a racist yourself generalizing all white Europeans like that.
And you say that in Europe everyone is mostly white, but still wonder why they don't seriously consider a black person as a head of state?

"is the brokedown palace message board on imdb really the forum for this"
I don't think so.
Some people just don't have common sense or civility, instead generalizing their singular-focused, biased views to every forum possible.
Just another way to troll!

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
Ok, you're right about a lot of what you said, Corteo, though what do post-slavery times have to do with anything? If you go back so long, the whole world was different.
Anyway, this movie wasn't a reflection of how average US citizens think of Thailand, but simply what the people who wrote the screenplay read and heard about what happened to US citizens there. I'm not sure who your post was aimed at, and who you're really angry about, either.
Hollywood is simply the world capital of expressing oneself, not just for those born and raised in the US, but anyone who proves themselves worthy to a producer, I believe. If you want to come to Hollywood and make a movie to prove your own point as long as it's not purely anti-US I'm sure you'd get plenty of people's attention and some money to do it.
On behalf of how the "US sees 3rd world countries" there's no such standpoint, US is only a place for a variety of different people, like any other country. I wasn't born here, and stand against many values I see around me, too.

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
"There is no place on Earth where African people are treated so badly for who they are." What about Africa?
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
It's the easiest thing in the world to generalize. Americans are arrogant. Frenchmen are snooty and elitist. Africans are uneducated and starving. Muslims are violent and repressive. Asians are uptight workaholics. See how easy it is? I could just go on and on all day. But here's the hard part. It's not true. We are all human and we are all individuals, and none of us around the globe are any one thing. I can be arrogant one minute and humble the next. Generalizing and slinging blame at others is just about the laziest, easiest thing there is to do. What is hard it to stop doing that, to truly look and see people as they are, and to try to understand each other.
As far as slavery goes, Americans didn't invent it. It has existed all over the world for centuries. People have been, and continue to be, cruel and brutal to each other everywhere. Sometimes individually and sometimes collectively.

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
(Which is for them, every other country on the plantet)
Alright, I'm a little confused, what's a 'plantet'?
Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
No America did not invent slavery. I never read/hear anyone mention the fact that the Africans sold their own people into slavery.

Re: I'm Sick and Tired…
At least in the U.S., they teach most of us proper grammar and spelling. U.S.-ians? You also appear not to know the difference between "their," "there" and "they're." Maybe you should get a proper education before you go bashing an entire country of people.
And on your other points. I don't think the U.S. is the only country in which school shootings happen. What about Germany and the 15 kids who were shot and killed in March?
Maybe there's "no other place on Earth" where Africans were treated as badly. But I believe there are PLENTY of places where religious prosecution has been and still is the norm. I don't think you can claim - unless you're completely ignorant - that the U.S. is the only place where racism or discrimination exists.
I don't think anyone here takes up for Bush and his "war on terror." You'll get no argument from me on his war. Even Congress wouldn't declare it a war. You can make an argument against Bush there but not against the entire country.
Maybe a little education would do you good.
Call me Katie. ;-)

DOES this movie actually bash Thailand that badly? NO and duh, the United States is one big mess, why tell us what we already know?

Ha! Funny, as a Yank, I found this uneducated, misconstrued, and hilarious. It's just lazy to hate the US like this. Yeah, we do some bad stuff, but NOT EVERYONE BELIEVES IN IT. It's just like saying Eurotrash. I love Europe, but it does have some d'bags.
Please pay no attention to this post, as I am probably hammered

I'm Sick and Tired…
I mean , people just look at your own country.
There is no other place on earth where African people were treated so badly because of being who they are. Even when slavery was abolished, there are still cases where african-americans are being treated with racism and humilliation.
Or, talking about safety, Do you know any other place where some kid went to school and murdered 10, 17, 33, 50 people?
It's like, school may not have as good buildings as in the U.S., but we certainly don't need a metal detector to enter school.
How about war? Is there any other war in world when Goliath faces David just because "he" thinks he might be attacked?
So lets face it, The United States of America, is not a special place on earth, not everyone is trying to be like them and certainly they are not attacked by everyone in the planet. It is simply that the united-statean way of life is not the only one, and certainly not the right one if we need to talk about it.
