Brokedown Palace : The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

is probably because of the way it depicted the King of Thailand.

Thais take their King VERY *VERY* seriously. People (mostly foreigners) have been convicted for tearing up banknotes with the King's image on them or desecrating his image in any other way.

And it seems rather ludicrous that the King would pardon prisoners in person (something like that is done in writing, e.g. when an outgoing US President pardons prisoners) and that a top official would deliberately invite a scene being caused by withdrawing a pardon in front of the King's person.

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

..OR like in many other countries, Thailand could have banned filming of the movie there due to the fact that it was not portrayed in a good light in terms of action and corruption that took place during the film. Just like how the Catholic church denounced the Exorcist when it came out, because it went against faith and Catholic prophecies, portraying the religion in not such a great way.

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

The corruption in the film was not just on the Thai side. So I don't think that it was unfairly picking on Thailand.

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

Seems to me Thailand is quite proud of it's draconian prison system..they make tourists well aware your *beep* if you try to smuggle drugs.if anything, films like this send the message they want to send

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

jaysis, yeah. i never thought of it like that. mind you, even though i have no intention of ever committin' the crime, the movie makes me a tad paranoid (briefly) that some sly bastid's gonna plant somethin' on me if i go there.

one way to stop any of this from ever happenin' again: legalise drugs. all of them. everywhere. regulate the drugs industry and let people kill themselves if they want to! they're gonna do it anyway. free up prisons for the BAD guys. the ones who hurt OTHER people.

if mankind makes it through another 1000 years, i'm pretty sure they'll have woken up to that notion by then and will look back at our current justice system the way we look back at days of old when suspected witches were burnt at the stake.

of course, i could be wrong who wants a bet?

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

i'll take that bet, Roj you make an excellent point, i must say!
Thanks Roj!

The Exorcist was filmed on the campuses of Georgetown and Fordham universities. Both of them are Catholic. The Church wasn't against that film.

The king isn't the one who gives the pardon in person, an emissary of the King does.

It should have been banned in Australia.

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

Thailand along with almost all the countries on this earth are corrupt. But Americans don't make it easy on themselves when they go to other countries. PPL have got to know that when you enter a foreign country especially a third world country they may target you.

Re: The reason why this movie is banned in Thailand..

Actually, I read somewhere that it was banned in a city in the Philippines (where they actually filmed), along with all of Danes' films, because she made disparaging remarks about the city being infested with roaches and rats and smelling badly, etc.

I'm smitten. I'm in deep smit.

I read the same thing about Claire Danes being pretty much declared persona non grata in Philippines because of her comments and all movies, TV shows and whatever else she's involved in are banned there.

However, I believe the main reason why it was filmed in Philippines instead of Thailand is because of the nature of the film; I'm sure when Thai found out that the film paints their justice system in negative light, there's no way they would have allowed it to be filmed there. From what I have read, the only part of this movie actually filmed in Thailand were the exterior shots of Royal Palace in Bangkok.

Some people just can't handle hearing the truth.

Moderators are terrorists.

the King of Thailand pardons

people on his birthday. Every year on his birthday he gives numerous pardons. As far as him going to the prison that is highly doubtful considering that there are quite a few prisons all over Thailand. I don't believe that was the scenario in the film though.

Thailand has a crime

called lese-majeste, so any criticism of the king can be punished with imprisonment. I think the title itself would have been enough to get it banned here, due to the fact that it could be misconstrued as insulting the palace and therefor insulting the king.
