Hamlet 2 : Rock me, sexy Jesus: Some thoughts
Re: Rock me, sexy Jesus: Some thoughts
I don't know I will have to get Little Shop again and check it out. What I remember is how the song was like EVERY musical that has high schoolers in it. Up beat and I thought that with that tempo/song they could have sung about ANYTHING. I thought that that was the point. I mean, how can anyone sing about "Rock Me Sexy Jesus?" but it works. They could have sung the recipe for tuna cheese bake instead and it would have not changed anything. Everyone super happy, dancing, and singing at the top of their lungs. "Yeah!"
Re: Rock me, sexy Jesus: Some thoughts
That makes sense, and might be true.
I know on the DVD extras the writers talk about how the stage's scaffolding is supposed to mock "Rent".

Good observation. I wondered why that song seemed so familiar. Even the melody is the samethough it's not quite as exactly the same as you make out.
Actually, the phrase from "Little Shop of Horrors" is:
Little shop! Little shop of horrors
So it would line up exactly with "Sexy Jesus" if the latter went:
Rock me, rock! Rock me sexy Jesus
Beats me if it's an intentional reference, but it does seem too similar to be purely coincidental.

Right on. Been forever since I've seen LSOH, and you're right about the lyrics, I was missing a syllable. Easily transposed though.
Thanks.

Rock me, sexy Jesus: Some thoughts
The song's meter and sound notation is absolutely a parallel to the title song of "Little Shop of Horrors."
Imagine: "Rock me, rock me, rock me Se-xy Jesus!"
Alongside: "Lit-tle, lit-tle, lit-tle Shop of Horrors!"
So, is this intentional? It would follow the theme of the movie that the main character is untalented and lacks creativity, but still able to make something people love by adding twists and controversy to already successful source material. So it makes sense that just as the play's characters are taken from a successful play made previously, it's core song is taken from an already successful musical.
Just a thought, but it seems to fit.
"Dear little punk-fa ggot.."
