Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl : 8.1? Really?

Re: 8.1? Really?
Sure, there's better films with much lower ratings than this one. However, I think this film's rating is justified; apart from being a whole lot of fun, I would say it delivers on every level. And more importantly, it's undeniably one of those movies that's universally pleasing.

Re: 8.1? Really?
No kidding. One of my personal favorites, and everyone else I know at least likes it.
Re: 8.1? Really?
People enjoyed. That's all that matters. The ratings aren't based purely on the mechanics of what makes a great film. It's about how much people enjoyed them.

Re: 8.1? Really?
I saw your subject line, and I actually expected you to claim it's too low. Opinions differ, apparently.

You happy now?
Re: 8.1? Really?
What does an IMDB rating mean, after all? What is a good movie? Ask 100 people and you will get 21 different answers. 20 people will tell you their personal favorite while 80 will tell you what their pals liked and so they liked it, too.
And another thing is - most people vote very high for a movie they have seen recently and liked. They vote 10 because they had a good time and everyone (they know) likes it, so hey. They don't weigh the movie against other movies, don't think about score, camera, plot - they just say: It was SO AWESOME, so it's a ten.
That's why I ignore movies that sky rocket upon release and make everyone tell me: you must see this, everyone is seeing it, it must be great!
Mediocre candy for the masses - that's what makes you win elections. Or a simple digital vote.

Re: 8.1? Really?
Doesn't that seem like a much higher rating than it deserves.
"Deserve's" got nothing to do with it (with apologies to William Munny).
Of course it deserves it's score; every movie does. The score is the aggregate of those who took the time to vote, therefore it follows that it accurately reflects the votes of those who voted - unless you are saying there's something wrong with the website tally system or it's been hacked by Russians..
If anyone wants to comment on the score, the thing to say is that you are surprised it's either higher or lower than you would have thought viewers would have voted it, not that it deserves to be higher or lower.

Excellent retort.
So many stories, so little time.
