Made-For-TV Films : Favorite Mini-Series?

Favorite Mini-Series?

What's your favorite mini-series? Mine is Fingersmith, but I'm also pretty fond of Tipping the Velvet. Angels in America is on my Watchlist. I need to get on that.

Stay back, geek! It's about to get tragic.

Re: Favorite Mini-Series?

I have to go with Centennial. I know that goes back a way, but I have never seen one to match it, with the possible exception of Roots.

I also loved The Adams Chronicles and The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Elizabeth R.

Many moons ago, I did get hooked on the first half of Winds of War, but the end was such a downer/cop out, I never bothered with the second half.

Oh -- and I did see all of the Thornbirds -- even with the tweaks in the plot from the book, it was good.

Haven't gotten hooked on a good miniseries in years.

How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

I miss the mini series. Shame they don't do them anymore.

Brideshead Revisited (1981)
Downton Abbey (uncertain categorization)

Re: Favorite Mini-Series?

Winds of War and Wars of Rememberance-The epic stories from Dan Curtis. Amazing.

Holocaust-Horrifying. Meryl Streep is also in an early role.

Anne Frank: the whole story - heartbreaking and inspiring.

Tsunami-the Aftermath-Told from multiple storylines.

Stardust- Details the tragic nightclub fire of 1981 in Dublin, Ireland.

The Red Riding Trilogy-Gritty and sad but has a huge payoff.

The Salem Witch Trials- A fine cast about disturbing subject matter.

I'm a fan of any Stephen King miniseries.

Ones I want to see: Cranford, Danielle Steele's Crossings, Sins, Songbird, Pillars of the Earth, The Mill, North and South, Southcliffe, Rich man poor man, This Is England, the Corner, The Widower, See No Evil: The Moors Murders, Longford, Traffic,
Scarlett,a burning passion: the Margaret Mitchell story,

Re: Favorite Mini-Series?

- Roots (also Roots: The Next Generation)

- Shogun

I saw bits of The Winds of War and Rich Man, Poor Man. I more or less "lost the plot" in the former case and stopped. I was a bit young in the case of the latter one to fully appreciate what my folks were watching.

Somehow TV watching seemed to change and nothing else seemed to carry the gravity that would pull me into spending that much of my life following a single production on the scale of Roots or Shogun. Since then, I've noted but not followed some decent longish multi-night movies but that's not the same as an event that compels you to sit on the living room carpet staring at a 26-inch screen for five to ten nights as my top two had done.

Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.

Re: Favorite Mini-Series?

You may be interested that "Roots" has been remade with an all star cast. Not sure when it will broadcast. I've never seen the original one or it's sequel. I might buy it the next time I see it on sale and give it a spin.

Re: Favorite Mini-Series?

Wow, I had not actually caught that news yet. A part of me is cringing that they felt it necessary to remake it at all. The original had quite the all-star cast too.

I suppose the 2016 generation of viewers want to look at media in Ultra-HD or better quality now and can't be persuaded to spend time watching anything that was not even shown in widescreen (for all I recall) so the original may seem too dated from a technical side.

If you can find Roots on DVD or whatever on sale, I'd heartily recommend snapping it up for your library.
