From 1993: Barbarians at the Gate (HBO). - that should have been James Garner's Emmy.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Great list! Too bad most of them cannot be viewed. I would love to see "Isn't It Shocking" again.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

I need to pull out One Of My Wives is Missing and Murder By Natural Causes -- haven't watched them in ages!

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Remembered another one yesterday ---

Jane Eyre (made in 1971 I think)

George C Scott as Rochester - Susanna York as Jane. Musical score by John Williams!

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

I also love Murder By Natural Causes! Fantastic movie. I just pulled out my old vhs copy not too long ago. I need to rewatch it!

I also adore Pray for the Wildcats. Andy Griffith is so underrated in his bad guys roles! Remember Savages?

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

ESCAPE FROM SOBIBOR(1987) is IMHO the best made for TV movie I've ever seen(and I have heaps of favorites) Why this movie was never released on the big screen is a complete mystery to me.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Bad Ronald

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

I was just going to add Dark Night of the Scarecrow. Aside from the spate of "very special" subject matter movies like Something About Amelia and the great mini-series like Roots and Shogun I think I have tended to forget most of the rest of the Made for TV material I've watched from the 70s and early 80s. Dark Night of the Scarecrow always seemed a notch above anything else. It could have been a film.

I never saw it but Brian's Song was probably about the same caliber as it got theatrical release after first showing on TV.

Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.

The Jericho Mile.. with Peter Strauss…

sometimes I forget that this was a made for tv movie... great film, great soundtrack.. it did win an Emmy or two...but, just had the movie feal too it.. I keep hearing about them remaking this as a Major Motion Film... not sure if its true.. but would be amazing if they did.
(though Peter Strauss was sooo good in this)

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

All this time and nobody said "Brian's Song" the original, not the remake.

Badder than old King Kong, Meaner than a Junkyard dog

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

The 1970's was without a doubt THE decade for made-for t.v. movies. The ABC T.V. Movie of the Week was the pioneer of this format, the brainstorm of Aaro Spelling Productions. A majority of the films had a supernatural tone to them. My favorites are as follows;

1. " The Night Stalker " (1971)
2. " The House That Would Not Die " (1970)
3. " The Norliss Tapes " ( 1973)
4. " Crowhaven Farm " (1970)
5. " Gargoyles " (1972)

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Surviving: A Family in Crisis (also known simply as Surviving, and later released on VHS as Tragedy) 1985

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Christ, exhaustive list! I've seen maybe a quarter of those listed. I've been told Bad Ronald is essential viewing and I still need to see Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I'm pretty sure Let's Scare Jessica to Death was a theatrical release (and it's a great film at that).

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

I went through the IMDB lists for MTV movies for the 70s, 80 and 90s, so you are right, it is pretty exhaustive. It's not really a genre per se, but these movies are insanely fun. The only MTV movie that I didn't really go for was the popular, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", with Kim Darby.

"Let's Scare Jessica to Death" is a very good movie. I didn't think it was a MTV movie, but that's what IMDB has it listed as. So I went and checked on some other sources and it sounds like IMDB has it wrong.

"Bad Ronald" and "Dark Night of the Scarecrow" are both worth finding.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Did you list the one with Valerie Harper being terrorized while alone on a road trip? I cannot recall the title.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

#32 - "Night Terror"

That's funny you mentioned that movie because I saw it for the first time about three weeks ago. Richard Romanus was creepy.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Have you ever seen Haunts of the Very Rich? The ending scared me as a child.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

I did start to watch it, but then I got distracted. I do need to go back and watch the whole thing because it looked like some I would enjoy.

Robert Reed was in it, if I recall.

Surviving - '85 has always been one of my favorites….

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

Well The Bermuda Depths isn’t on that list, so I’m out of here.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

That isn't to say it isn't a good one. Consider it added to that list.

Best Made-for-Television Movies: The Day After (1983)

The Day After (1983)

ab_channel=CinemAmbiente

This remains the most watched TV Movie in U.S. history. An estimated 100 million Americans watched, and it had a Nielson Share of 62. It was a truly unnerving experience.

If you're interested, here is the attack segment. It makes extensive of stock footage, but is nevertheless very effective and very chilling.

Those animated X-Ray skeletons were hilarious.

Awesome! When is this going to happen? All those breeders running around like pathetic little insects.

This was released theatrically outside Nth America. I didn't bother going to see it, because I knew it would be crap and I was right when I finally saw it on vhs. The queue in Auckland went round the block for its first week on a Saturday afternoon.

Yeah, I liked "THE DAY AFTER" as well.

That is definitely another good one.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

mentioned by someone else years ago in another thread: A cold night's death. I think it's the best M4TVM. plot, cast, script, direction, and that ending, well, once you see it you realize it cant be topped.

My original choices: 1.Prescription: Murder. Lt. Columbo meets America.

2. The Lathe of Heaven. Time travel, time alteration, mind control, revenge. Great version of LeGuin's story.

3. Professional Foul: Master wordsmith Tom Stoppard's take on the cold war, football/soccer, politics, academics, academic's cold war politics.

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies…

I HAVEN'T seen ACND, but would LOVE to. The MOST REALISTIC one I've EVER seen was 1983's SPECIAL Bulletin which FOOLED people watching into thinking it was REALLY HAPPENING. MUCH LIKE the Orson Welles radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds back in 1938.

"THAT'S SOME BAD SHIT, HARRY!".

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

"A Cold Night's Death" is an excellent made for tv film. It's got atmosphere galore, chilling, eerie and a story that takes you right in. Plus a small ensemble cast that works to full advantage. Highly recommended. ***1/4

Re: Best Made-for-Television Movies

The Lathe of Heaven. Very arty, complex head-fuck of a movie rare in those days, somewhat more common today. I remember it drove my dad, a classic anti-intellectual, just crazy with confusion.
