ESCAPE FROM SOBIBOR(1987) is IMHO the best made for TV movie I've ever seen(and I have heaps of favorites) Why this movie was never released on the big screen is a complete mystery to me.

I was just going to add Dark Night of the Scarecrow. Aside from the spate of "very special" subject matter movies like Something About Amelia and the great mini-series like Roots and Shogun I think I have tended to forget most of the rest of the Made for TV material I've watched from the 70s and early 80s. Dark Night of the Scarecrow always seemed a notch above anything else. It could have been a film.
I never saw it but Brian's Song was probably about the same caliber as it got theatrical release after first showing on TV.

sometimes I forget that this was a made for tv movie... great film, great soundtrack.. it did win an Emmy or two...but, just had the movie feal too it.. I keep hearing about them remaking this as a Major Motion Film... not sure if its true.. but would be amazing if they did.

The 1970's was without a doubt THE decade for made-for t.v. movies. The ABC T.V. Movie of the Week was the pioneer of this format, the brainstorm of Aaro Spelling Productions. A majority of the films had a supernatural tone to them. My favorites are as follows;

I've been told Bad Ronald is essential viewing and I still need to see Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I'm pretty sure Let's Scare Jessica to Death was a theatrical release (and it's a great film at that).

I went through the IMDB lists for MTV movies for the 70s, 80 and 90s, so you are right, it is pretty exhaustive. It's not really a genre per se, but these movies are insanely fun. The only MTV movie that I didn't really go for was the popular, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", with Kim Darby.

This was released theatrically outside Nth America. I didn't bother going to see it, because I knew it would be crap and I was right when I finally saw it on vhs. The queue in Auckland went round the block for its first week on a Saturday afternoon.

mentioned by someone else years ago in another thread: A cold night's death. I think it's the best M4TVM. plot, cast, script, direction, and that ending, well, once you see it you realize it cant be topped.
My original choices: 1.Prescription: Murder. Lt. Columbo meets America.
2. The Lathe of Heaven. Time travel, time alteration, mind control, revenge. Great version of LeGuin's story.
3. Professional Foul: Master wordsmith Tom Stoppard's take on the cold war, football/soccer, politics, academics, academic's cold war politics.

I HAVEN'T seen ACND, but would LOVE to. The MOST REALISTIC one I've EVER seen was 1983's SPECIAL Bulletin which FOOLED people watching into thinking it was REALLY HAPPENING. MUCH LIKE the Orson Welles radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds back in 1938.

"A Cold Night's Death" is an excellent made for tv film. It's got atmosphere galore, chilling, eerie and a story that takes you right in. Plus a small ensemble cast that works to full advantage. Highly recommended. ***1/4

The Lathe of Heaven. Very arty, complex head-fuck of a movie rare in those days, somewhat more common today. I remember it drove my dad, a classic anti-intellectual, just crazy with confusion.
