It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia : What was the last truly great season?

What was the last truly great season?

I think most of us would accept that, as much as we may enjoy watching their new content, the gang's best work is by now long behind them. The question is though, what was the last great season, where episode after episode was hilarious and hit home in an essential way? I'm rewatching the show from the beginning so will refrain from giving my own opinion until I've finished. I'm interested to know what others think, though.

Season 5

Re: What was the last truly great season?

5 was the last consistently great season for me. I still watch it religiously and enjoy the series but since then it's been more up and down featuring average episodes more frequently.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

Hard to say as I've loved episodes from every season, but I remember watching season six, and thinking something was...off. So, I'd probably agree with the others that they peaked in five, but I haven't felt it yet. Still great.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I honestly think 9 and 10 were great

11 was a huuuuuge step down imo, much bigger than 5 to 6

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I agree with you on season 9. Some of the episodes aren't rated very well, but in my opinion there's gems in there and no episodes that are totally awful. I think Mac and Dennis Buy a Timeshare is one of the most underrated episodes of the entire defies.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I would agree that there was definitely a dip in season 6 but then I think the show recovered pretty strongly in seasons 7 and, although the opinion seems unpopular, 8. Since season 8 the show's lost it's direction in my opinion. It's become less energetic, nuanced and, ultimately, less funny. The show's had to go into more and more outlandish territory in order to get laughs and, at times, it's felt much more forced than before.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I'm halfway thru s7 and have laughed more during this season than any other. Although it's mostly the fat mac bits like "cultivating mass" and the doctor scene had me in tears like no other comedy. I think it's just my kind of humour though because I like to go to the gym.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I wouldn't say it was any specific season where quality dipped. They have kind of hit and miss seasons throughout to me. Season 6 and 8 were a little down. Season 7 and 9 were very good. 10 and 11 are probably the two weakest overall. 12 seems like it will be a good one.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

Actually 8 was pretty solid too. Pop pop and wedding massacre were the only ones I didn't care for.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

9 was the last truly great one. Much better than 8 IMO,

Re: What was the last truly great season?

I reckon seasons 3-7 are the golden age so I'm gonna say season 7

Re: What was the last truly great season?

Denied.

It's just as much quality work as it was from the beginning. Stop thinking after such a long season they will do better...could you write seasons upon seasons of stuff that is funny? No? Then shut up and enjoy the fact it's still on air and will make you enjoy 20 minutes of your life at a time.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

This season is going to go down as their last great season mark my words
Every episode so far has been gold

Re: What was the last truly great season?

5 is probably the season which has the most homeruns in a row, I think.

That said, I think all the seasons are good, and it's not gotten nearly as bad as people on this board seem to think.

It's not at its peak anymore, but it's still beyond solid.

Re: What was the last truly great season?

Season 6 did seem a bit off, but Season 7 was very strong. Seasons 8, 9, & 11 were a bit lower than 10, but I think this season has been fairly strong. I give them credit for experimenting with different episodes - sometimes they end up fantastic (Charlie Work) and other times its not as strong (Being Frank). They're still great.
